I just went to open the game and there was an update (new icon) and it says that

“MD works with third-party services for advertising and analytics purposes, and to optimize your gaming experience.

And honestly, it kinda stopped me cold. Not sure what to do.

PNW Oregon 8b when is it time to treat invasive trees and blackberry

I plan to do hack & squirt on Locust and Hawthorn, and foliar spray Himalaya blackberry. I need to get the timing exactly right, especially the locust.

Looking for what is “Fall” or best time to treat. Now? Beginning of September? October?

Also, does the herbicide get taken down better if the plant is deep watered or it has rained recently? Or is dry better, if it even matters either way.

We’re in a drought, does that change the timing, especially for the blackberry?

Protected Shiro plums from raccoon for one night at least

The Shiro plums are almost ready, and for 2 days I would go out and find dozens of fruits on the ground and little branches broken off.

I’ve been protecting some trunks from sunscald by trying those blue plastic tree protectors loosely to the trunks to shade them.

I thought, those are slippery and hard to climb, why not encase the trunk in plastic and see what happens. It took 4 of those covers and a lot of twine, along with a little aggravation when the end of the twine got lost in the roll, as well as the wind whipping everything out of my hands while trying to tie knots.

But it worked! Raccoon showed up, walked around, looked straight into the camera, but didn’t climb and not a single plum on the ground. I hope my luck holds until they can be picked.

Event status icon wrong?

Does this happen to anyone else in OOC events? xxxx/XXXX and the icon scribbled out.

It fixes itself if I go into camp or world map, but reappears randomly. A tad annoying when playing.

What happened 73 days ago?

In my den there are 9 people who last played 73 days ago, which is like April 25.

What happened that weekend that either caused people to lose access to the den, or stop playing the game entirely? Strange.

Finally something good.

PNW, Oregon, Willamette Valley

Spotted this purple loosestrife from a distance on the side of the little creek. That stuff shows up occasionally, spread by water, wind or critter, and I try to jump on it immediately.

So after worrying about it for a few days while we had some desperately needed rain, I packed up my cutters and walked out there. After stomping through the reed canary grass to get to it, for some reason I decided to run it through the Picture This id even though purple loosestrife is already in my “garden”.

Shocked: It said Blue Vervain (Verbena hastata), native to the US, and sure enough they look alike. The stems and leaves are practically identical but the flowers are shaped differently although similar in color.

Not very often does a common invasive turn out to be a desirable native around here. I was thrilled, weeded around it a little and, and left it to hopefully make seeds and spread.

Pacific Northwest blooms didn’t open

In the mid-Willamette Valley, it was a warm and dry early spring. I wasn’t able to water much because of an irrigation system failure.

Some of the later blooming varieties gave up and their blooms formed but never opened. Just dried up.

Parrotfeather dispersion by Robin nest building

This robin nest in the photo fell down and whaddya know. They like to line their nests with mud, and traveled at least 500 ft to a pond for it. I know because that pond is the closest one that has parrotfeather in it. It also shows up from time to time in ditches near there.

Note the little bright green parrotfeather segment in the nest. All it takes is for the bird to drop that, or part of it fall off, while flying over a body of water and there you go.

Mystery drug reactions solved?

I got an email from ProPublica that they have a new podcast, so I listened to their first one on generic drugs.

Turns out they found that FDA inspectors of international facilities that manufacture drugs are finding serious problems. But the FDA has for years just granted exemptions using the reasoning that drug shortages would be bad and no reason to say anything about it because that might scare people (paraphrasing here).

They described people taking a particular drug for transplant rejection. One man had his levels of the drug tested, and they varied until he got on a brand name version.

I immediately thought of my family member who went on generic losartan. Within a couple months he was at the ER for dangerously high BP. A while after that, he was practically passing out with extremely low BP.

He eventually started taking a minuscule dose (half of a 25mg tablet twice a day) and stabilized.

Out of curiosity I looked up his drug, using the information on the bottle, in the ProPublica lookup database of FDA field reports. Sure enough, for the manufacturer in China, there were findings of “unacceptable”, letters of warning, and this statement in the Inspector’s Notes:

“There are no written procedures for production and process controls designed to assure that the drug products have the identity, strength, quality, and purity they purport or are represented to possess.”

What is he even taking, and how much? I am absolutely floored by this information. Hard to imagine how many people this kind of thing affects and what the consequences are.

Black locust followup

TLDR Did it by the book; there are resprouts

Last year I hacked & squirted two locust that were driving me nuts with their attempts at taking over everything. Left them standing there to make sure they were DEAD. Treated one a second time.

Cut one down early this spring; haven’t got around to the other. Still completely dead. No other locust trees in the vicinity. Looked out there and saw sprouts up to 75’ away from where the trees were.

The sprouts didn’t seem very vigorous. They are kind of purple instead of vibrant green. Maybe from the herbicide effects or from having to grow up so far from the root left alive?

I had hoped to see the last of it. Plan is to monitor all summer and pull them the minute they pop up.
Pics:

  1. sprouts w/dead tree behind
  2. sprouts
  3. more sprouts way over there
  4. pile of pulled sprouts.

Protecting young tree from deer

PNW Oregon Willamette Valley

You can do this out in the field in late summer if you see a tree with the size of trunk that is attractive to deer wanting to scrape their antlers. (If you don’t have t posts and fencing in your back pocket. )

Wind or drape a long blackberry vine around the trunk. The thorns will deter the deer. Zoom in to see the dried up vine and undamaged trunk of one from last year.

How often does it autosave?

If someone is playing along in camp or events, is there a specific amount of time between saves?

Edit: Not talking about cloud save. Want to know how often the game saves locally while playing. Going to world map triggers a cloud save, but my game has crashed immediately on clicking the world map icon without opening it, causing loss of progress.

I’m looking for the timing of local autosave. My game crashes frequently and items I recently made will be gone.

Copilot chathelp hallucinated that it fixed OneDrive

Long story short there was a subscription issue, OneDrive got red Xes. Went to chat (turns out it’s copilot) for help and next thing I knew we had uninstalled Onedrive but it wouldn’t reinstall.

It had me deleting registry keys, files, tasks, running power shell commands. Nothing worked. Keeps getting an already installed error.

Came back later and asked for a one-page summary of the steps we had taken and step 8 was how we had verified it was working, the blue icon reappeared and the red Xes went away.

When I reminded it that it hadn’t installed at all, it said we would use the real truth and not the optimistic narrative.

I realize I kind of got sucked in and went too far with it but it kept saying this next step will finally fix it.

Almost got me in a gmail scam

Got an email from a friend I hadn’t heard from for quite a while. [Friend name] has invited you to an event]

Like I said I hadn’t heard from them for a while and I got excited. Oops, emotion triggered. But there was no info on where, when, the purpose, etc

[RSVP to see details] so I clicked on that button. It wanted my gmail, and the email had come to one of my gmail accounts, so that seemed to track. I typed in my gmail and proceeded to the next screen [enter password].

I just started to type when all of the scam podcast advice, stories on this sub, articles, warnings on social media kicked in. Brain said “check it out first” so I texted them and sure enough they said to ignore it, it’s a scam.

Not sure what the scammers could have done without the 2FA device but they are pretty clever so who knows. Tried to trick me into giving them the code maybe.

I thought I was so savvy but it’s true, emotion cuts through a lot of the rationality. I am grateful for all the times I’ve heard “slow down, check it out first.”
