A review of Delhi Screen Society's screenings.

I recently went to a screening by Delhi Screen Society and man I was surprised.

Pros:

First of all, the hosts were super helpful and friendly. One of them was a cosplayer who made her own props. All of the organizers made sure to talk to each and every person there even helped with food delivery options. One of the organizers was a gamer who had immense knowledge about games and movies so made amazing connections to various games. Man, they have a diverse set of organizers.

Secondly, the post movie discussions were one of the most enlightening ones I have ever had in any of the other movie clubs I have been to. Everyone just leaves after the screening or organizers talk to a few people. Here, not only were the organizers super knowledgeable but also made the discussions so engaging.

Thirdly, the playlists were amazing! They took suggestions from us before the screening in their group.

Cons:

The venue could be better, no parking available but it is okay if you take the metro. They told us they are looking for more places to screen so I don't think it is their fault.

"With Open Eyes" is the title of the last episode and I can't stop thinking about it.

The title suggests there are no more comforting illusions left. Throughout the series, the Roy children survive by telling themselves stories: Dad will finally love me. I deserve this. Winning will fix me. In the finale, each sibling is forced to confront reality "with open eyes." There is no fantasy left to hide inside.

Kendall's ending is deeply Shakespearean. Like tragic protagonists he is ultimately haunted by a death that cannot be undone. Colin, Logan's former bodyguard and the one person who knows the truth, silently follows Kendall in the final moments. His presence resembles an ever-present reminder of Kendall's crime.

The irony is devastating. Kendall spent the series trying to become Logan. He even says what Logan says in s2 finale which I believe set Kendall off to go against him when he said the waiter was "Not a real person". He says the same to Shiv and denies it completely. He hit Roman just like his father would, he always drew that line and protected all of his siblings and never hit them until now, Roman smiles in mockery when it happens because he sees that Kendall is no better than his father, he did the same. He inherits Logan's moral emptiness without inheriting Logan's empire. His identity was never "Kendall Roy"; it was always "the future CEO." Once that role disappears, there is no self left underneath.

The water imagery is always linked to Kendall. Water has followed Kendall throughout the series. It represents guilt, death, cleansing, escape, and rebirth all at once. Kendall repeatedly seeks out water after moments of emotional collapse. He floats in pools, stares into oceans, and nearly drowns. Water is where his guilt continually resurfaces. It's a striking image because water has always offered the possibility of release whether through confession or even self-destruction. Now he is barred from all of it. He is trapped in life with his guilt rather than liberated by it. The railing functions almost like the bars of a prison, suggesting that Kendall's punishment is not death but continued existence.

He ends the series exactly as the title promises. He finally sees the truth that Logan's approval was unattainable, that becoming Logan was spiritually empty, and that the crown he built his entire identity around was never truly his.

"With Open Eyes" is a line taken from Berryman's poem "Dream Song 29" It explores overwhelming guilt, self-deception, and the fear of being secretly monstrous. The finale ends with Kendall staring out over the water the place forever tied to the worst thing he has ever done while separated from it by the railing. The railing emphasizes that his prison is internal. He can see freedom, but he cannot reach it. Throughout the series, he believes there are only two possible futures which is to replace Logan as CEO or Die. Now there is this third option where he is living and did everything he needed to do yet with no rewards.

Caroline says she dislikes eyes, it's almost as if she's expressing a discomfort with being truly seen or truly seeing others. The Roy children were raised by two parents who were emotionally incapable of really seeing them. The environment the Roy children grew up in: a family where looking directly at feelings was almost unbearable. The finale is the moment when looking away is no longer possible.

A Deep Dive into Caroline's Relationship with Each of Her Children

Caroline is absent for all children, but the way that absence manifests is different depending on which child she's dealing with. Caroline isn't responding to her children as individuals; she's responding to what they represent to her own unresolved pain.

A recurring pattern is that Caroline seems least able to tolerate Kendall. I don't think that's accidental. Kendall is the child who most resembles Logan. He grows more capable of the same manipulation and ruthlessness (killer) that defined his father. Every interaction with Kendall forces Caroline to confront the man she spent years trying to escape. When Kendall finally reaches a point where he simply needs his mother, Caroline disappears.

Contrast that with Season 4 - When Roman completely unravels after Logan's death, Caroline allows him to stay close to her. She comforts him in her own emotionally limited way and doesn't push him away. She even reaches out to Shiv herself but doesn't tell Kendall until he has to call her himself.

Roman doesn't threaten Caroline psychologically. He is damaged, immature, and openly broken. He isn't becoming Logan; he's still the neglected youngest son searching for affection. Shiv, meanwhile, occupies a more complicated place because Caroline clearly projects aspects of herself onto her. Shiv inherits many of Caroline's traits. Caroline talks to Shiv about how she should have never had kids and how she is incapable of love. Caroline isn't just confessing her own failure as a mother, she's extending it to Shiv. That's a toxic form of bonding because it creates intimacy through shared damage rather than healing. Shiv constantly questions if she is capable of love.

That's why there are occasional moments where she acknowledges her directly because she sees herself reflected back.

Kendall is different.

He's the child Caroline seems least capable of looking at because he embodies the marriage she wants to forget. Every time Kendall pursues Waystar, chases Logan's approval, or begins acting like his father, he becomes another reminder that Logan's influence won. Rather than confronting those feelings, Caroline emotionally distances herself. She's a textbook example of a parent who projects her unresolved trauma onto her children instead of processing it herself. Looking at him means looking at the life she escaped but never truly left behind.

Rather than confronting her own past, she responds to what each child represents to her. Kendall reminds her too much of Logan, Shiv reminds her too much of herself, and Roman remains the child she can pity without having to examine her own role in creating his pain.

Logan Roy did love his children but it is complicated.

One take I see a lot is that Logan never loved Kendall, Shiv, or Roman. I don't think that's what the show is saying. Nor do I think it's saying he was secretly a good father. His children spent their entire lives trying to earn his approval because there were moments of warmth. If Logan had been cold 100% of the time, they wouldn't still be chasing him into their 40s. Instead, he gave them intermittent affection.

Psychologically, intermittent reinforcement is one of the strongest ways to create attachment. You keep chasing the next moment because you've experienced it before. A lot of people dismiss everything Logan gave them as "just money," but I don't think that's fair either. Money wasn't just money to Logan. It was his language of love and Kids who had a mother who regretted even having them. Kendall during his speech for Logan's funeral says "He made us, three siblings" and the camera immediately went on to Caroline because he didn't mention her. When Kendall says he wants out to Logan, he doesn't allow it even tho he himself gave him a warning on his birthday which he later says was a joke because money keeps the kids attached to him.

The children also wanna be the successors because ultimately Logan loved his company the most and becoming the successor of that company is earning his love permanently in their eyes.

That doesn't excuse his abuse. It explains why he never saw himself as the villain. He wanted successors who would become versions of himself. They're damaged. They're manipulative. They're selfish. But they never become Logan. They don't inherit Waystar. They do inherit Logan's way of living life.

But they also inherit something Logan never had: the capacity for guilt, vulnerability, and love. They're broken because they loved him, and because in his own deeply damaged way, he loved them too. He just never learned how to love them without trying to own them.

His children failing to become his successors is ultimately a blessing. They lose the company, but they don't lose the last pieces of their humanity. The children are still guided by their emotions. These are flaws in Logan's world, but they're virtues in any healthy one. Them not being killers and not serious people will be good for them eventually.

Logan spent decades trying to create an heir in his own image. He failed. At first glance, that's his greatest failure.

From the audience's perspective, it might actually be the greatest gift he unintentionally gave his children.

The children in s1 after therapy say that he doesn't swim and never swims but we see he does swim just not with his kids around so that they don't see the scars on him. It is him trying to still look strong and not be vulnerable but also His children literally never get to see the wounds that made him. Instead, they only experience the man created by those wounds.

They inherit his wounds, but not his soul.

I don't think Tom ever loved Shiv in any true sense.

I think Tom is a romantic by temperament, but he is first and foremost a social climber. Every major decision he makes is filtered through status, power, and self-preservation.

People often focus on how badly Shiv treated him, and she absolutely was an abusive partner. But that doesn't automatically make Tom's love genuine. From the beginning, he is obsessed with proximity to power. He constantly seeks Logan's approval, worries about his position in the company, and measures his worth through his access to the Roy empire. He says it at family dinner before his marriage that he is happy to marry into the family instead of saying he is happy to marry Shiv. The conscious choice to be with Shiv after abuse makes me dislike him more, The Roy siblings going through sh*t because of their dad's validation, almost tragically trapped into wanting to be the best in their dad's eyes. The difference, for me, is that the Roy siblings' pursuit of power feels fundamentally tragic, while Tom's feels chosen.

Shiv only begins to respect Tom once he stops being submissive and betrays her. It mirrors the values she learned from Logan. Cruelty and self-interest become qualities worthy of admiration. Tom is interesting because he is also an expert performer. He presents himself as the devoted husband, the harmless outsider, the man who just wants to make the marriage work. It is a mask that is convincing enough to fool both Shiv and much of the audience. Like many manipulative people, he tells so many lies and performs so many different roles that the performance becomes his identity. The tragedy is that he eventually forgets who he actually is. The lie becomes the truth.

In the end, Shiv and Tom are both incapable of unconditional love, just in different ways. They are not a ship you should be shipping. It weirds me out to see this as a ship.

Looking for Mars Chocobutter lip liner dupe? Here it is: Maybelline Cross The Line.

This would help a lot of girlies out there. You can't even tell there difference. Maybelline has a better formula than Fae as well, Fae is not very smudgeproof but this one is!

I changed my mind about Shiv. I see why people here were calling me a misogynist for hating her more than Kendall and Roman.

I just finished s4 and It all makes sense. She deserved better than the creep Tom. I don't understand why people root for him. Sure, he was treated poorly and Shiv got it coming for her but she has been sidelined all her life. Ultimately, she is trapped. Kendall is somewhat free to be someone outside the whole Waystar thing.

Before I made my post about Hating Shiv, I was on s3 and no one was understanding me🤣😂

Plus all of them have done terrible things but Shiv at least draws a line at things, at least she tries to. She has some idea of who she is and who she believes in. She doesn't wanna end up like her Mother. She cheats, yes, I HATE THAT. She externalizes her traumas on others unlike Kendall who internalizes. Yet, I feel she actually is better than the two as a person. I don't like her much but I feel bad for her.
