My hair is as dry as the Sahara desert. Do I need a trim/cut?
I only recently started wearing my natural hair out after about 5–6 years (probably more honestly) of wearing braids/twists back-to-back with basically no breaks. When I was younger, my mom also relaxed my hair regularly.
My hair would probably be much longer now if I hadn’t ripped out so much of it every time I took my hairstyles down🥲 My aunt says the back of my hair looks very full and healthy, but the front/top area is noticeably thinner.
I’m pretty insecure about my edges/front area, which is why I almost always wear a headband to work. At the same time, I honestly think it suits my face because without it my head/face looks kind of “empty,” like something is missing.
I genuinely can’t tell whether my hair is healthy or not, dense or not, needs a cut or not.
The only thing I know for sure is that it is beyond DRY (no wonder, I don't put any products in it).. From a distance it looks dense/full, but close up it looks kind of sparse, especially near the front. I honestly have no idea what’s “normal” because I’ve only been wearing my natural hair like this for around 2 months.
I mainly need advice on very lightweight products that could help me retain moisture or define my hair a little without weighing it down. I have sensory issues and cannot stand heavy, oily, greasy products. I tried using heavier products once (6th picture) and it genuinely drove me insane, I kept feeling the urge to wash my hair and scrub my scalp until it felt completely clean again.
My afro is also kind of floppy, especially on the sides, and I’m wondering if that means it’s getting too long there and finally needs a trim/cut for shape or if that's normal.
My end goal would be very thick, dense hair like pictures 8, 9, and 10.
(I also added the 2 products I currently use.)
The biggest downside for me so far of wearing my hair in an afro is that my coworkers and best friend keep telling me I look 17 even though I’m turning 23 soon. I don't like that but I also don't want to go back to wearing braids or twists.
