How would you recreate a skirt like this? Beginner trying to understand the construction

I’m still fairly new to sewing and I fell in love with this skirt I saw in a video. Unfortunately, it was a one-off thrift find from a shop in Zanzibar, so I can’t inspect the actual garment or find a pattern for it.

I’d really like to try making something similar, but I’m having trouble understanding how it is constructed.

From the video, it looks like there may be a base skirt with very large overlapping pieces/flounces of lightweight crinkled fabric attached to it, rather than normal small tiers or ruffles. The edges also look intentionally raw/frayed.

Could anyone help me figure out what kind of fabric would behave like this? It looks lightweight, crinkled/pleated and slightly lustrous. I’d also really appreciate any advice on how to approach the pattern and layers if I wanted to make my own version.

I’m not expecting to make an exact copy. I mainly want to understand how something with this silhouette, volume and movement could be constructed.

I’ll attach the video because it’s much easier to understand when you see the skirt moving

My rare Yohji Yamamoto Y's x Genta Kosumi FW07 wrap midi wool skirt came!

I'm pretty sure it's unisex and can be worn on both sides (front/back). I have a few more items from that collab on my wishlist and hope to get them one day

Just purchased this rare 1990s Issey Miyake wrap Jacket!

It hasn't arrived yet, so I'm sharing the seller's photos because I'm too excited to wait. I think it's an incredible piece. I especially love the obi-style double belt detail. The first time I saw it, I actually thought it was a Yohji Yamamoto design, the silhouette reminded me of his work.

I couldn't find much information about this specific jacket online. The only reference I found was a 1984 New York Times article about Issey Miyake at Bergdorf Goodman. The seller mentioned it's a rare collector's piece from the time when Bergdorf Goodman was Issey Miyake's exclusive U.S. retailer, which would explain why it has both the Issey Miyake and Bergdorf Goodman labels.

Looking for a proxy shopper from Türkiye to Germany

I'm looking to buy a dress from a webiste called Buseterim in Türkiye and have it shipped to Germany.

Before committing, I'd just like a quote for the total cost (dress (₺2,999 + your fee + shipping). I can only pay via paypla g&s, I hope that's possible.

If anyone can help, I'll send the link to the dress so you can check if it's possible to purchase.

Thanks! 😊

Formula issue in brand new eyeshadow Palette?

I bought my first eyeshadow palette online from a tibetan brand in China in collaboration with an Artist and couldn't pass it up because I absolutely love the turquoise shade (Yeti). I also love the packaging, it's an unusual design but still nice! It was still completely brand new and factory sealed when I got it.

After opening it, every shade feels completely normal except for the black glitter shade. It was already crumbled straight out of the sealed package. I can't even do a proper swatch because it immediately breaks apart into loose powder the moment I touch it. The rest of the pans are firm and behave exactly how I'd expect.

It was packaged very gentle, wrapped in what looked like 10km of bubble wrap, it took me a while to get to get to the Palette so I don't think it was damaged during Transit. It was sealed the whole time until I opened it and only 1 shade is crumbling.

I did some quick swatches (I've honestly never swatched an eyeshadow palette before, sorry if it's not perfect 😅), and in person the shimmer shades are gorgeous. The photos don't really capture it, they have a really pretty iridescent sparkle. The black glitter shade is beautiful too, but it's basically unusable because it just disintegrates into thoughts and prayers.

Personally, I prefer buildable pigmentation over maximum color payoff, so I actually like that most of the shades aren't fully opaque in one swipe (to my untrained eye). They're easier to control and create a softer look.

Ironically, the black shade falls apart in the pan if you so much as look at it wrong, yet once it's on your skin, it clings on for dear life. It took quite a bit of scrubbing to get it off my arm and finger. The longevity is actually impressive.

I'm not too upset since I mainly bought the palette for the turquoise and natural shades, but it made me curious.

Is this usually a common manufacturing/formula issue that happens a lot?

I've thought about scraping the whole black shade out, but for now I'm just leaving it alone and letting it crumble away naturally.

The names (if anyone is interested) are in tibetan and reference mountains and mountain ranges. If I'm not mistaken, the black one translates to ''Great Snow Peak" and resembles a star-filled night sky over the mountains. It is accurate, the night and stars don't last forever, they come and go and so does the eyeshadow. I'm starting to think it's intentional😃

Rare 1990s Castle in the Sky (Laputa) Mini Trunk

It was never officially sold in stores, you could only get one by winning a lottery in Japan back in the 1990s. I bought it secondhand from Japan and later sold it to an even bigger French Ghibli fan and collector.

Seeing their reaction made me so happy. Their collection is incredible! Part of me still regrets letting it go because I would have loved to keep it in my own collection as well.

It's made of leather, very durable, beautifully crafted, and surprisingly compact at 40 × 23 × 17 cm. Carrying it was very comfortable, though I held it for just a few minutes. It even came with the original (slightly wrinkled) paper😄

Am I Overreacting for refusing to let my mom use my limited-edition collector's suitcase unless she leaves a deposit?

EDIT: Thank you so much for all the advice, I'll stick to my ''no'' and try to find a storage unit! Thank you.

EDIT 2: To address some things:

  1. the blue censored person is my SISTER. This conversation was only with my sister, dad and I. My mom didn't send anything in the chat but she did tell me to give it to her so she doesn't have to buy one
  2. Yes, I still live at home
  3. Yes this is a real conversation. My "Did I ask'' was directed to my sister who often only has something negative to say
  4. Since a lot of people adviced me not to travel with a collectable, I won't. I thought it could survive a trip but I'd rather not risk it. Thank you!
  5. I often have difficulties standing my ground and defending my items/opinions because of the arguments that start from doing so. But I'll look into a storage unit like some of you suggested and hide all of my stuff there and just buy her a normal suitcase like I already offered to do, thank you

EDIT 3:

  1. I have a job and pay rent + groceries and contribute to the household. I haven't moved out because it is uncommon in our culture to move out and live alone before getting marriedMor having a partner. My parents have a traditional mindset

--

I (22F) like collecting limited-edition merchandise and random things. I recently bought a suitcase that was a Japan-exclusive collaboration between a luggage company and the anime Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. It wasn't something you could just buy, it was a lottery prize, with only about 50 made. I searched for one on a secondhand platform, saved up for it, and finally bought it.

The suitcase itself was ca. 200€, shipping from Japan was 125€ because it weighs 5.3kg, and after customs/taxes I spent roughly 450€ in total. It wasn't an impulse purchase. I saved for it because collecting is one of my hobbies. Because of its rarity and popularity, it's usually resold for 400-600€ online on different websites in Japan. I was lucky to find one for 200€ in ''brand new tags attached'' condition.

My mom is traveling to another continent soon for two weeks to visit family. My dad told me to let her use my suitcase so she doesn't have to buy another one.

My biggest concern is that my mom has a very hard time saying no to family or co-workers. In the past, she wanted to take another one of my collectible bags to work, and I had to convince her not to because I knew one of her colleagues would ask for it, and I genuinely believe she would have given it away and tell me to ''just buy a new one''. She even said so herself. That's happened with other 'normal' belongings before, which is why I'm worried.

This suitcase is also sentimental to me because I bought it for my future travels. I was looking forward to taking it on my first trip abroad myself. It honestly makes me a little sad that its "first trip" would be someone else's, especially when I worked hard to afford it.

I offered an alternative: I'd happily help buy my mom a good, durable suitcase or contribute toward one. I just don't want my collector's suitcase being used.

I said ''no'' first and then considered asking for a 500€ refundable deposit if she absolutely insists on using it, simply because replacing it would cost that much or more now (with shipping and customs/taxes) if it were damaged, lost, or given away.

My parents think I'm being unreasonable.

AIO for refusing to lend it out, or for wanting a deposit if they insist on using it?

Looking for help finding/buying two items in Vietnam (secondhand)

I'm hoping someone from Vietnam (or someone familiar with Vietnamese secondhand fashion platforms) might be able to help me find two sold-out pieces from the Vietnamese brand ''VIERY''.

I've been looking everywhere, but I haven't had any luck.

1. Nerd Orchid Top (Red/Burgundy, any size)

2. Sun-Kissed Orchid Dress (Black, any size)

I've attached photos of both items. Any size S,M,L is fine.

I tried searching for Vietnamese secondhand sites similar to Vinted, Carousell or anything, but I read that many people in Vietnam buy and sell clothing through Facebook groups or Marketplace? Unfortunately I don't have Facebook and I'm not familiar with how the local resale market works.

If anyone from Vietnam could:

  • point me toward the best places to look,
  • help me search,
  • or even message a seller on my behalf if you happen to find one,

I'd be incredibly grateful. I'm happy to purchase if we find them🙇🏻‍♀️

Thanks!

6 bread rolls, 2 varieties, 1 very lonely seeded roll..

I only like the seeded rolls. The packaging made it look like there'd be a fairly even mix of 3:3 (like it always is). Turns out there was exactly one. My sister stole it the second it came out of the oven while I was busy arguing with my mom about whether this qualifies as false advertising under german law.

Drop Dead x Junji ito knitted zip hoodie

My favorite piece from the collab back then, I've received a lot of compliments!

I regret getting a size 2XL a little. I think I look short in it and L/XL would've been fine but it's still wearable , right? Or does it look like a tent already?

Also, please ignore the fingerprints on the mirror. The large spot and the tiny grey spots are my highly professional attempt at covering them up. Something had to be done

Recently picked up this reversible 1-of-15 Hiroki Tsuzuki jacket

I recently picked up this reversible jacket from the brand/designer 'Hiroki Tsuzuki' and thought some people here might appreciate it.

The jacket is part of a very small run of 15 individually altered pieces, with each one being different. All are reversible, the other side is a much more wearable plaid wool jacket. The back of the distressed side has an embroidered family portrait of Hiroki Tsuzuki and his parents on.

One thing I found especially cool is that the photo of the designer working on a jacket in the last picture is actually the exact jacket I ended up finding and buying.

I only discovered Tsuzuki's work recently and completely missed these when they originally released. The black "smoke" version seems to be the most sought after and disappears within seconds whenever it shows up for sale. It's said to be the most ''wearable/acceptable'' version.

The 3rd photo also includes two other Hiroki Tsuzuki pieces I bought: the oversized unisex grey barrel shorts and the oversized unisex double-waisted fold-over jeans. The jeans deserve a separate post because the construction is wild in person and there are multiple colorways (black, orange, beige) that all look great. I'll probably make a separate post about those tomorrow.

A few notes after handling and trying on the jacket:

  • It's absolutely massive in person
  • this thing is heavy-heavy. Idk how much it weighs but I got physically tired from carrying it (maybe I'm just weak)
  • warm x10
  • The wool side is very easy to style and looks great worn as the outer layer. It's just massive
  • The wool can be a bit scratchy against bare skin, so I'll definitely have to wear a long sleeve underneath
  • 10/10 worth every cent

I can't provide fit pics right now, so I included reference photos of both sides being worn. The jacket is so oversized that flat photos don't really communicate the scale properly. You'll look 100lbs heavier at the top with small legs popping out at the bottom!

I'm fully aware that the distressed side is pretty extreme and definitely not for everyone. Realistically, you probably won't catch me casually walking around my small city wearing that side. The plaid wool side, however, is much easier to wear and the side I'd get the most use out of.

I'm still hoping to eventually find one of the black "smoke" versions since that's my favorite variation from the series. If that day ever comes, I might end up passing this one on to a friend in Japan who's also been looking for one. This was my first Tsuzuki jacket, so I'd probably get sentimental about it and immediately regret letting it go.

For now though, I'm just happy I managed to find one at all

Help me identify this mysterious vintage sweater, I've been trying to solve this for almost a year

I know this is a long shot, but I'm hoping someone here might recognize this piece.

Almost a year ago, I came across a knitted long sleeve sweater with a print that immediately caught my attention. The design reminded me a little of some vintage Jean Paul Gaultier graphics, although I have absolutely no proof it's related. The problem is that there is no brand label whatsoever. The only clue is a small tag that appears to be French, which makes me think it may have originated in France.

The reason I'm so obsessed with finding its origins is partly because of the strange journey it took to reach me.

The first time I ever saw it, it was being sold by someone in Belgium. Then months later I found what appeared to be the exact same sweater being sold on depop but I was late (again) and then again by an elderly woman in France. She only offered local pickup.

Despite the complications, she went through so much effort to help get it from France to me. The listed price was only 4€ but after everything she did, I felt terrible paying so little. I insisted on paying 50€ instead. I basically told her that either she accepted the 50€ or she could keep the sweater because I couldn't in good conscience pay only 4€ after all the trouble she went through. We went back and forth for a full day until she accepted it!😃

So now this sweater has become one of my favorite pieces, not just because of how it looks, but because of the story attached to it.

The fabric, construction, print, and overall feel make me think it's genuinely old rather than a modern reproduction. The print doesn't look faded from wear, itt looks intentionally faded/muted, with a sort of khaki/light olive tone that feels very vintage. I've only ever seen 3 examples of this sweater in my life: the Belgian one, the American Depop one and the French one I own now.

I've spent nearly a year (on and off) trying to figure out where it came from, who made it, and what its story is

Does anyone recognize this piece, the print style, the knitwear manufacturer, or even have suggestions on where else I should look? At this point I'm not even concerned about value, I just want answers so my brain can finally stop wondering about it😆

Thanks for reading my little (maybe) vintage mystery. Any clues would be appreciated!

70s-80s Lottery Ticket Dress bought from Japan

I'm way too impatient to wait until next week to show everyone this sweet find! The tag has definitely seen better days, but I think it says "Handwoven Mexican Embroidery Finest Indian Art J. Rodriguez." I've never seen a lottery ticket dress before!

Someone in another subreddit mentioned it might date back to the 1970s–1980s. I found it on a Japanese online thrift site and have been eyeing it for almost a year. I finally paid for shipping, so it should arrive next week, but I just couldn't wait to share it with you all😅

Fingers crossed it arrives safely and without any issues!

Can anyone figure out what's written on this tag or recognize the brand?
