Switching to Glasses

I’ve worn contact lenses for about 45 years, and lately I’ve started wondering if I’m just tired of the daily routine of putting them in and taking them out. I know it only takes a minute, but after all these years it still gets old.
I also miss being able to rub my eyes whenever I want. I’ve learned how to do it carefully with contacts in, but it’s just not the same.
For those reasons, and a few others, I’m thinking about switching to wearing glasses full-time (except maybe on weekends). The funny thing is, I’ve never really been a glasses wearer. I’ve only worn them in the evenings after taking my contacts out before bed.
Has anyone else reached this point after wearing contacts for decades? If so, did you make the switch to glasses, and are you glad you did?

What do you use to track monthly spending?

What tools or methods do you use to keep track of your monthly spending? I prefer organizing my expenses into categories so they align with my overall budget totals each month, which helps me stay on track and make adjustments when needed. I’ve been using Monarch Money for this purpose and have found it helpful, but I’m curious to hear what others are using and whether there are better or more effective options out there.

Help- Glasses or contacts

For the past year, I’ve been trying to figure this out. Multifocal contacts work well for near vision, but they compromise my distance vision, while single-vision contacts are great for distance and leave me needing over-the-counter readers for close-up work and reading. I also have a pair of progressive glasses, but no matter what I wear, my computer screen still isn’t as sharp as I’d like. I’m due for my yearly checkup and trying to decide what to do next. I really don’t want two different contact prescriptions because that is costly. I’m leaning toward using single-vision contacts for distance, cheap readers over them for close-up reading, and maybe progressive glasses during work, even though I’ve never really been a glasses wearer. As I’ve gotten older glasses are starting to seem more appealing. Anyone else go through this?

Birthday and Christmas Spending

I’m looking to get a sense of how others typically handle gift-giving for children and grandchildren now that I am doing my final planning as I get ready to retire early next year.

  • About how much do you typically spend on gifts for children/grandchildren for:
    • Christmas
    • Birthdays
  • For Christmas, do you give:
    • Separate gifts to your children and their partners, or
    • One combined gift per couple?

Do you pay bills and other expenses using credit card for rewards and / mileage?

Do you pay your bills and other expenses using a credit card for the rewards and / mileage? Thinking about implementing this and wondering how many people do it and is it worth it. I know some people who do it this way for the mileage and use it for flying to their destinations on vacation. Others go more towards the cash back rewards because they don’t fly very much. Again wondering how many people do this and is it worth it.

Seldom used CPAP

I have a resmed CPAP machine that I have not used in about 2 years. Is it still safe to use or should I go through the process of getting a new one?

Retirement planning: Dedicated tools (Boldin, etc.) vs Excel

I’m getting closer to retirement and trying to decide how best to manage planning and ongoing finances.

I see a lot of discussion around tools like Boldin and other retirement planners, but I’m curious what people here are actually using day-to-day:

  • Are you using a dedicated planning tool (Boldin, ProjectionLab, etc.)?
  • Or are you managing everything in Excel (or similar spreadsheets)?

I’m currently somewhere in between—have used spreadsheets for years, but also experimenting with planning software—and trying to decide how much to rely on each as I transition into retirement.

Would really appreciate hearing what’s worked for you and why.
