Short but sweet one for ya. I'm on the maintenance/operations team at a local data center where we have 24/7 on-site security. We usually step over to the surveillance room during really quiet nights just to have a chat with security (it makes their nights go by faster as well, they appreciate us, we appreciate them). The guards observed a suspicious indvidual through the cameras near the main gate to the complex and time was about 2am. She sort of just paced back and forth for a few minutes until they decided to go out and investigate so we left them be and went on with our tasks.

About an hour later they joined up with up us in the cafeteria and I was literally fighting to stay awake at that point. They came in giggling to themselves and we were like "what have you done now?" They went "oh that woman at the gates? Yeah we approached her and the convo went like this: G=Guards, W=Woman

G: Hello! Security! What's the purpose of your visit?
W: He-hey, I'm he-here to drop off clothes for m-my son, he's supposed to be here
G: *Confused and looking at eachother* What's his name?
W: *states his name*
G: There's no one working here by that name, ma'am
W: No no no he doesn't work here. He was taken into... custody
G: *Even more confused and looking at eachother* Custody?!
W: Yeah... this is the jail, right?

So, apparently the data center looks too much like our local county jail which is just further down the same dead-end street 😂😂😂 That kept me awake for the rest of the shift

As the title says, I'm pretty new to working nights and I need solid advice on how to effectively switch from day to night and night to day. I'm really tired through the nightshifts even towards the end of the rotation so idk what I'm doing wrong as I'm getting the right amount of hours of sleep. I do shift rotations day/night with a few days off inbetween but it's not on a regular schedule.

Yeah I know that everyone's different and what might work for you might not work for me etc but I still want to hear what everyone's routine is for setting and resetting yourselves from day to night and vice versa. I still want to have a functioning social life when I have the days off 😊 Thanks

Hey! So yeah, as the title suggests...
I graduated college with a bachelors in computer science. My first ever job before and after graduating was at a gas station which funnily enough made me realize that I never ever want to work in a store again. I decided that I needed to make good use of my degree and started applying to IT companies and eventually got onboarded with a big international one where I still work today (I'd rather not give names, thanks). I started off as a trainee within customer support but also helped some teams out with cyber-security projects on the side as that's what I found interesting during college. An opening for a trainee-role in UX appeared so I applied and got it. I worked that field for about 2 years but wanted to try something new again. I heard that the company was looking for workers to their 24/7 server maintenance and response team. I was like "omg I really want to try this, it sounds so cool!" The odd hours and night shifts seemed different and would probably provide a interesting contrast from what I had been doing... I thought to myself.

So that's my current role, working shifts with a 4-person team and the actual work itself is so boring you wouldn't believe. Most of the time we just sit around watching some monitors flash and doing our rounds in the rack halls every few hours. Stuff rarely breaks but when it does it's not really that eventful at all. (We had very small "thermal event" once, that got my adrenaline pumping) The hours are nice though... I really needed to switch it up from working my regular 9 to 5 Mon-Fri.

However, I've recently found that I don't want to work in IT at all. I'm abroad atm on company PTO but I'm really dreading getting back on that plane because I just know that I'll be back to that predictable enclosed workplace. And to link back to the title... it's a dead end. I'm so done with everything that IT work brings that I almost want to puke just thinking about it. The pay is good but that's literally about it for me. My only degrees and certs are within IT so idk what I could do that aren't entry-level jobs while still trying to fill the cracks between what I like about my current job and what I need in a new job... while not needing a brand new 2-4 year education. I'm from Maine, US.

Basically, I need a massive change of scenery or else HR might hunt me down soon lol
(For legal reasons, that last part was a joke... maybe)
