My little old man just turned 14, and I'm already worried if he will have a 15th
I adopted him right before his 10th birthday, if you can call it adoption. He was abandoned at an animal control center, and people kept try8ng to surrender him but due to just simply accepting him from a stranger made them liable to the 130 dollar surrender fee, so he was passed onto the next person. From my understanding, this happened with a dozen strangers over hours. They were an hour from closing when I met this sad little dog. I filled out the application, and he came home with me.
I saw he was already a senior, but I guess it never really registered, not until today. It started with breakfast. He took a little longer to come and eat, I just shrugged it off as he was always at a slower pace. Daily morning walk, he toddler behind his two brothers, last few months walks either have gotten shorter or I carrying him to keep the pace. Today just was a small stroll, but his legs had tiny shakes but kept moving. It was hot today, so it was a short walk.
Go to lunch, pee break, and treat. Was calling his name and was almost yelling before he heard me and came meandering for his snacks. He waits by the door to pee, always being good on a leash, so there is just not enough energy to pull.
Finally, I'm just sitting and don't remember what I was doing and look down . He's next to me, and I just sit in silence. When did his little star on his chest fade away? When did your eyes start to become glossy and grey? When did you get little shivers and shakes? When did a silly nickname actually become a reality?
He still eats and plays like normal, but I guess the reality of he's actually old just hit a little heard today.
It's about to be my first dogs 7th birthday and third rescue dogs official 1 year celebration. It just leaves some heartache, remembering they are not around forever.
