What is the best "humble" manual system ?

Hi, I'm pretty well versed in the world of film SLRs, and I know that Nikon and Pentax are great if you're looking for something more interesting. Many lenses that are considered rare on other systems and therefore have slightly inflated prices are quite affordable on Nikon. For example, the 28 f/2 or 85 f/2. Also both systems have connections with the autofocus film and even modern era and you can buy things like a Samyang 85 1.4 or some 70-200 2.8, and such tricks are impossible anywhere else. Not for a couple of hundred dollars, at least.

But what if we ask a different question?

What if I'm perfectly happy with a standard set of cheap modest lenses, which on (almost) any system aren't rare or collectible? What if I want a set something like this:

- 24 or/and 28 2.8-3.5

- 35 2.8

- Standart 50 or 55 mm, of course. But personally, I think they are all good.

- 50 or 55 macro.

- 100 mm 2.8 or even 135, because 100 is rare on some systems

- 200 mm f/3.5-f/4 or a zoom like 70-200 f/4

Which brand, in your opinion, produced the best "Humble" lenses in terms of the combination of sharpness uniformity, CAs, coating and flare resistance (in particular, I'm curious who went the furthest in this regard), as well as mechanical reliability and resistance to fungus ?

And which series? Because many had lens coating upgrades during the 1970s, but at the same time, they started cutting corners on the mechanics and body, making more parts out of plastic.

I understand that the difference is small in any case, but I have this idea of an ideal lightweight, easily accessible modest system in my head and I don’t know what would be the best option.

Thanks.

Coffee from Honduras is something that can be the sweetest thing you've ever tasted, or as bitter as my life. You never know, and it doesn't matter what the roaster says. I'll report in the comments in 20 minutes.

The description is certainly encouraging, but I've fallen into this trap before.

I definitely wouldn't buy washed Honduras, but natural has let me down more than once. Just because it's natural doesn't guarantee it won't have that harsh bitterness. By the way, what causes that bitterness? Especially considering Guatemala and El Salvador are nearby, and the coffee from there is at least safe and often is super sweet.

I'm looking for ways to make the game more challenging for myself, and perhaps bring back the feeling of those first ignorant and innocent runs

I've been really into optimization lately. Sometimes I start from level one. Last time, I spent 22 levels in Balmora and other cities near trainers, before joining a faction and starting my adventures. That's gone way too far. I want to try playing like I did 23 years ago. I can't pretend I don't know mechanics and exploits, and where free expensive stuff just lies unguarded, but I can limit myself.

I have a rough idea of the set of rules that I should set for myself, but what else can you suggest?

- Do not exploit trade

- No training

- Do not exploit alchemy-intellegence thing

- Creeper and crab do not exist.

- Do not sell Daedric and Ebony items

- Don't try to optimize stats development, don't jump from the Silt Strider port in Balmora, just play, damn it !

What could I have missed? What else can you suggest? Have you tried playing like this? Are there any mods that could help me? Like setting a price cap for selling?

Thanks

My nFD 100 2.8 doesn't completely lower the "lollipop" in my Canon FTb all way down. It hangs somewhere half a stop above the "mark" on wide open. Is there any way I can adjust this?

There is a theory that this is how it should be, that this is factory compensation for light transmission.

I tested the exposure metering against my "old" FD 50 1.8, and it's challenging because with partial metering, it's difficult to find an evenly illuminated plane for two such different focal lengths. But overall, the nFD 100 2.8 tends to ask between 1/3 and half a stop more light. I doubt that the 100 2.8 has such a worse light transmission than 50 1.8. If a 50 1.8 is roughly T2.1, then my 100 2.8 is like what... T3.7 ? I doubt that's true. This doesn't match my experience with other systems. Besides, the difference in light transmission almost always smooths out at closed apertures. Overal, I doubt such a factory adjustment makes much sense.

I know these are minor things and not real problems, half a stop is not such a big deal, I know, I know, but this little detail irritates me. Because i have a pretty good FTb and my nFD 100 2.8 also in pretty good condition, and I like partial metering, and that was one of the reasons I bought this camera.

If it's an accessible and simple procedure that can be done with a screwdriver, I'd prefer to do it. I saw some manuals with complex schemes of the FD lens structure and I can’t say that I understood much from them.

Thanks

Don't you think there's been a lack of fun material lately? On the film side in particular.

Last year was pretty good. Here are just some things that I remember.

- Some gentleman who didn't retract an Elmar out on his Leica III and asked, "Why does my camera do that?" and posted blurry photos in circles.

- I also remember well how someone asked why his Olympus MU Panorama shoots panoramas.

- And my favorite - some guy who bought all the film scanning junk he could find: stand, macro lens, some LED.... and then "scanned" undeveloped film.

I don't remember anything like this in recent months. All I see is Leica guys and pretentiousness - it's getting boring, really. Where are all the newbies with their innocent screw ups ? Nobody even asks how to download photos from a film rebel. Have we scared away and gatekeept all the newbies? Is it our fault? Or was there something like that and I just missed it ?

If you remember any anecdotes I might have missed, please let me know. No links or anything. Just retell in few words. I'm bored, I'm sad and I miss funny photo/tech content.

Thanks.

How do I draw this lens?

Hi !!! Last week I decided that I wanted to learn drawing. So I've been watching YouTube tutorials for a few days now, and the guy said there to draw random objects, breaking them down into simple shapes. I'm trying to draw this camera, but this lens defeated me

It's a tapered cylinder with various transitions, some smooth, some abrupt. I'm trying to figure out how to draw cylinders like these, but I feel like I don't know what I'm doing.

Is there anything someone can help me with here? Or do I just need to grind ? My ovals are terrible, I can see that.

Big thanks.

Hello to all coffee lovers !

I haven't worked as a barista for the last few years, so I've been paying much less attention to new equipment, watching much less coffee YouTube, and all that stuff.

Before that I drank mostly V60 and when I had the opportunity I bought Japanese box or bag filters. And later I bought these new ones several times. If I'm not mistaken, that's all they have now for V60, right? And I just stopped enjoying pour over coffee at some point. I thought that maybe I hadn't fully recovered from covid, or maybe the problem was with my grinder, because when I was working in coffee shop, the grinder there was better than the one I have at home... I didn't know exactly why, but at some point I almost completely switched to a moka pot and aeropress.

Last November I saw these filters on a local store's website and I decided to buy them because they were cheap and because I wanted to use my old Melitta that I used a lot in better years (nostalgia, huh). I made some inexpensive washed Guji and it came out an 8/10 right away, just like that. My best pour-over in years. I thought it was a fluctuation, I made V60 and got the taste of not very good coffee from a cheap drip machine, And then I did melitta + pegasus and again 8/10.

Different recipes, different coffees, Pegasus is simply better, regardless of other factors, just consistently better. Smoother yet sweeter and cleaner, it has that punch you expect from any well-done percolation method. And it's much faster, my dusty 39mm burrs can't clog this filter.

What's going on? What did I miss? Have Hario V60 papers always been bad, or have they gaslighted me with their latest filters? Why do pegasus, Hario's cheapest filters, produce such delicious coffee in my old $3 Melitta cone ?

Thanks.
