Anyone here developed their own specific weather model and trading on it?

I know big shops (e.g. citadel) have a big forecasting team but was wondering if anyone here has developed their own model and using it for alpha generation.

I have an interest in meteorology and commodities trading and hoping to combine the two for even just a personal project. I know the markets well enough to know a retail trader doesn’t stand much of a chance due to the likes of citadel etc but I’m interested if it exists.

Questions about a career in this space

So I’m a fairly fresh grad who did a degree in physics from a prestigious UK university with upper average grades but not stellar.

I’ve always had an underlying interest in weather, especially regarding my interest in skiing and surfing/ forecasting but by no means would say I’m a hobby meteorologist although I think I am starting to lean that way.

What are my realistic routes into a career into meteorology - most likely forecasting right now or data analytics? I have been working in a hedge fund for the last year but I am not close enough to the alpha generation and I have began thinking that being a weather analyst would suit my interests well. Further to this I am also interested in the idea of just pure forecasting for military, private consultancies etc etc.

I assume I will need to get a masters but which universities are best for a fairly open ended degree where I can also learn the skills for careers outside of just being a forecaster - ideally I’d like a degree which sets me up for analytics with good data science skills. I understand Reading is good, as well as Washington and UBC.

Keen to hear anyone’s thoughts please, thanks!

My final ski mission of the season got very stupid very fast

This season I saw the slope freshly groomed at the evening and empty and thought:

“Tomorrow I’ll hike up and ski down. Great idea.”

For context, I’m not some hardcore skier. Just a guy with confidence levels far above actual skill.

So tonight I start hiking uphill while my kids are down below playing around. Everything is fine at first because the slope lights are on.

Then I get halfway up…

…and they TURN THE LIGHTS OFF.

Pitch black.

Suddenly I can’t see anything, I’m alone on the mountain, and somewhere below me I hear the grooming machine starting up again like a horror movie soundtrack.

At this point I’m too far up to go down without looking defeated, so obviously I continue climbing in complete darkness pretending this was all part of the adventure.

Honestly felt like the mountain itself rejected me.

Made it to the top though.
Still alive.
Questionable judgment remains.

Building a forecasting app and open to input

As a personal project (yes I know there are forecasting tools available so please don’t remind me haha) I’m trying to build a ‘one stop shop’ for weather forecasting, route planning, conditions and beta aggregation which is largely customisable for the user (for example a ski tourer can adjust their interface vs a mountaineer vs a backcountry camper etc since they don’t all care about the same things).

What do you guys find frustrating about the sites you use at the moment and what do you wish they would incorporate?

Of course it relies on numbers using the tool but am hoping to have a community aspect where people can add their own reports on conditions in the area among other features. Thanks

What do you wish your forecasting website had?

I’m working on a personal project for weather and conditions forecasting. It will do the standard forecasting available but I am hoping to try and make a ‘one stop shop’ for forecasting down to the really nitty details and probably try and incorporate a beta scraper that takes info from Facebook groups etc to give an up to date conditions report.

When you’re planning trips what do you wish your website had available, or maybe incorporated so that you didn’t have to use multiple websites to plan a single trip?

Like I said this is just a personal project to work on web dev and I understand there are many forecasting sites out there so please don’t reply with ‘this has already been done’ haha

Guiding in El Chalten

Has anyone got any recommendations for guiding services in El Chalten ski touring and ski mountaineering? Ideally looking to hope onto a ‘programme’ type experience for a week or so. Thanks!

As the title suggests really. At what age does someone become a no when applying to jobs generally intended for graduates?

Asking as I’m in a situation where I’d like to live overseas again but if I do I cannot guarantee I get a ‘career’ and may end up bumping around in fairly low level service jobs for a little while.

Hi guys,

I’m a recent physics grad from the UK, spent a year living in the Rockies after graduating then moved back to the uk, realised I preferred the lifestyle in Canada (I’m big into skiing, climbing etc) and the job market is bad in both places right now so have decided I want to move to Vancouver.

I have been applying to a couple (corporate/tech/sales) jobs here and there without much success and I understand it can be easier if already in the city. I have 4 months left of an IEC visa I can use and then I will be eligible for a years extension.
If it gets me in the right location I don’t mind moving and doing another ski bum type winter or whatever but I eventually want to be on a career trajectory in a good company (the same as if I stayed in the UK).

For people who have done it or have a good insight what is the best way to play this so that I can move, get a job and eventually get visa sponsorship/pr? Am I best to just move to Van ASAP and start looking or is it best to give it a few months of consistent applying before going down that route?

I know the job market is cooked whichever way we look at it so please refrain from the ‘please don’t come’ type comments and as I said happily work in a ski shop for 6 months if it means I’m in the right location for interviews.

Thanks in advance.

I’m early 20s, living in a big city I don’t like, kissing the boots of people I don’t like, spending weekends with people I am indifferent about doing activities I’m not interested in.

Thinking about pursuing a different career path but I don’t know what. I’ve got a stem degree.

What did anyone who’s jumped off the corporate ladder end up doing?

I know the ideal situation is to go to a boot fitter directly and try on etc but this situation does not allow for it…

I’m currently in a 27.5 Fischer rc4 boa 130 MV - about 80ish days in the boot - love it but have started to have a few issues. As a side note I prioritise performance in my boot.

Feels a little sloppy in terms of width and vertical volume (got two volume spacers in there as liner has packed out and have very flat feet). Toes touch the ends (but not hard) and when they flex they retract far enough back to possibly be too long (27 would probs be my perfect size?)

Now the reason I am going to a forum for this question: I have the option to buy the 26.5 boot in low volume for $140 new but has to be done online and I cannot try this boot on before buying. I’m happy to risk some money for this stupidly good deal.

On paper does what I’m doing sound stupid? Feels like a rational purchase but I want a professional advice based on the facts in case I’m missing something - I know the best idea is to see a real bootfitter but just wanted to run it by someone.

I feel like going lv is a no brainer just concerned about length but I don’t think they’ll be so small that a toe punch wouldn’t be possible?

I could possibly go and try on the same boot at a different store…

Unexpectedly ended up with the next month off. Where would be best to ski based on current conditions. Ideally western Canada based but not Banff (I know they might have the best conditions). Can also do the states. Won’t have a car so ability to hitch hike and use buses is ideal.

Looking to do it on a budget… send me your ideas!
