I'm looking for a dentist to have an Oral Prophylaxis and probably Teeth Whitening, but I need a consultation first for teeth whitening.

I'm hoping for a dentist that is Patient First and cares about your teeth. Someone who'll really tell me if Teeth Whitening is good for me or not.

Thank you!

Why use the term 'expats?'

I've been hearing a lot of western nationals call themselves 'expats' when they are nothing but just immigrants.

Why use a different term? It baffles me because it seems like they're making themselves special.

I did search and the distinction is:

Expat - to work abroad temporarily

Immigrant - to settle permanently

Apologies if I sound biased, I only hear 'expat' being used by western nationals, and have yet to hear eastern nationals use it on themselves.

Pre-colonial Hand Gestures for Greetings

Ever since I started learning Baybayin, I got very interested with our Pre-colonial history. So it got me curious on what our hand gestures were when our Pre-colonial ancestors greeted each other. I saw these statements from Friars. Are there any pictures or examples of how these are done?

Especially the mentions of "raising one or both hands to the face and placing them upon the cheeks" and the other is "he doubles the whole body with the most profound bow, at the same time lifting one foot in the air, and doubling the knee and lifting both hands to the face"

I want to use them in my daily life.

"Of the civilities, terms of courtesy, and good breeding among the Filipinos. Chapter XVI. The Filipinos are not so ceremonious in their actions as are the Chinese and Japonese; yet they have their politeness and good breeding, especially the Tagalos, who are very civil and courteous in word and action. Upon meeting one another, they practice our custom of uncovering the head--not that they used hats, caps, or bonnets; but they wore a piece of cloth like a towel, some three or four palmos long, which they wound around the head in becoming fashion, like the ancient crowns or diadems. This they removed, as they now do the hat \[sombrero\]--which they have adopted, in imitation of us, abandoning the \_ potong, as they called the towel or diadem which they formerly wore.As among them it is not courtesy to remain standing before a person whom they respect, they seat themselves upon the ground, or rather on their heel-bones. Seated in this way, with head uncovered and the potong thrown like a towel over the left shoulder, they talk with their superiors. The mode of salutation upon entering or meeting anyone is as follows: They draw the body together and make a low reverence, raising one or both hands to the face, and placing them upon the cheeks; they next sit down waiting for the question that may be put to them, for it is considered bad manners to speak before one is spoken to..."

— Fr. Pedro Chirino, Relacion de Islas Filipinas (1604), edited by Emma H. Blair and James A. Robertson, "The Philippine Islands, 1493-1898: Volume XII" (1904)

...

"422. The natives of these islands employ innumerable other elegancies and courtesies, now in actions, now in words, now in names and titles, which they apply to themselves; these are various according to the difference of the provinces, and are too numerous to mention, for they are ceremonial, and they value their ceremonies highly. No one will pass in front of another, without asking permission, and in order to pass, he doubles the whole body with the most profound bow, at the same time lifting one foot in the air, and doubling the knee and lifting both hands to the face. If one has to talk to any person of higher rank, he shows all reverence and squats down \[pone en cuclillas\], with raised face, and waits thus, until he is asked his reason for coming; for to speak without being questioned would be a point of bad breeding."

— Fr. Juan de San Antonio, Cronicas (1738), edited by Emma H. Blair and James A. Robertson, "The Philippine Islands, 1493-1898: Volume XL" (1906), Chapter XLI

Filipino Grammar Book

Hello, I'm a Tutor and have been tutoring English for the past months. May tutee ako na nag request yung Nanay niya if we could have Filipino grammar.

I don't have a background in Filipino so I wanted to ask if what book or source I can use as a reference for our topics with my student.

Mainly just to help improve the tutee's sentences. Kasi I myself is average kapag Filipino na 😅

Thank you!

Mga Kuwento for Grade 7

Good day po, Teachers!

I'd like to ask lang po. Ano po yung mga kuwentong binabasa ng mga students sa Grade 7?

May tutee kasi ako, and I'm helping her with reading stories both in English and Filipino, then we answer some questions and discuss them.

Ticket to Heaven ⛪

I've always had this inexplicable hatred for religion and religious people.

I was honestly excited how Tanrak and Barth would fight against religion, but that violent struggle I expected never came. I was expecting war but I found peace instead.

Ticket to Heaven was really beautiful in how they framed the struggle and how the conflict was resolved. Tanrak and Barth solved their conflict without violence or burning bridges. I didn't see any violent struggle between the characters.

I'm actually doubting myself already whether I'm an atheist or not. All I experienced was religious rhetorics about homosexuality. It blinded me that religion also teaches us to give love and give grace. That we can love ourselves and God at the same time.

Ticket to Heaven made me realize that my hatred, while understandable because of my experiences, shouldn't be directed towards religion. I realized that although religion sees homosexuality as a sin, it also teaches to love and give grace.

Because aren't we all sinners? All of us rely on love and grace from Him daily.

Being gay, being in a homosexual relationship might be a sin, but I'd like to argue, is it harming anyone? Are we physically, mentally, and emotionally harming the people around us? No

If a relationship is built on mutual respect, care, and consent, it isn't inflicting injury on the world.

If everyone relies on that same grace daily for their own imperfections, then no one has the monopoly on it.

English Grammar Book

Hello, I want to hear from you guys which books are good to improve my English grammar.

I've tried searching, and I found the Grammar in Use series by Raymond Murphy from Cambridge. Is this book worth the purchase? Or do you have other suggestions?

Thank you!

Good ESL Company

I have 8 months experience of teaching ESL, and I have a TEFL.

I prefer ESL companies that:

- High Pay (60+ PHP per 25 minute class)

- Doesn't have penalty (like 51talk or Edge Tutor) or will still pay you if the student is a no show

- doesn't have a strict (6 month service with a bond penalty if you leave before finishing the 6 months)

- has bonuses

- caters to children

- are not booking system, like I want a company that gives you students not a free market where you have to market yourself to get chosen

Edge Tutor was really attractive but I heard it's super strict with attendance and it's difficult to take a leave of absence. And the penalties are huge!

I'm really considering Edge Tutor because of its high pay, but it's strictness as mentioned is really a downside.

51Talk has low pay and has high penalties (penalty is worth 3 classes)

I'm still applying for UNHoop, still to submit my demo video. Any reviews for UNHoop?

Are there other ESL companies you might suggest fellow Filipino teachers?

Simple Make-up to get rid of oily look

Problem/Goal: I need a really simple makeup just to avoid looking oily during my online class.

Context: I'm 23 M, with light brown skin tone, and I'm an online ESL teacher.

I transferred company and it doesn't use zoom. Zoom has a makeup filter which really was a life saver. But right now the app we use doesn't have one.

I do use sunscreen even when inside the house. I'm looking for something matte powder I guess? and somehow not expensive.

Recommend products please 🙏🏻

The Shackle to My Potential

I love and care for my family, I really do. Especially my brother, he's the reason I have yet to leave the house, and why I contribute to utility bills and food.

But, I really don't have the privilege to slow down, take time, or delay my career goals. Being in a financially poor family, where my financial contribution is needed, is tiring and restricting.

I want to learn a new languge, learn an instrument, or do outdoor activities. But I can't. The money is needed to help with house bills and expenses.

Like literally, there's little left to my mother's salary because of loans, and my father doesn't have job who is also lazy! He doesn't contribute to the family, and does little house work!

I'm so tired to the point where my efficiency at work has gone down, I'm getting burnt out, and sometimes, out of nowhere, I'd just wish for my family to disappear 🥹.

I'm tired, I feel I have so much potential but I can't tap into it.

Since elementary, I have always been so very interested in joining extra curricular activities like musical instruments, sports, or literary activities.

It's not just about the money, but I also don't have time because of work. I have to work for more than 8 hours just to earn enough money. I always set aside money for myself, for eating outs, or going to cafes because I refuse to not give myself something.

I just wanna escape and leave my family. I wanna disappear, but I can't leave my brother alone, I don't want him to suffer.

I have always wondered, what could I have been if I were able to join the extra curricular activities I wanted.

I'm so desperate to go abroad already, I'm a bit lost but at the same time I need to hurry and stop being lost and fix my future plans again.

What could I have been if my potential was developed. I always see the potential in me, but finances and time are always given to my family, the shackle to my potential.

Edit: p.s. while reading it again I realized how messy the thoughts are, but I'll leave it as it is.

Maya Loan

Hey everyone 👋🏻, I've been using May for months already. Paying bills, sayings, and other stuff. I also already have a Maya Easy Credit of 11,000.

I'm curious about the Maya Loan, I tried using it but it says I need to use Maya more.

Is Maya Loan available to you? and what was the trigger or reason that it's available to you?
