Differences between the main and starter set rulebooks

I'm considering getting the rules for Pillage (and some more figures as well) and that has led me to wonder what the differences between the smaller rulebook in the starter set and the big rulebook are. That has a big impact on what makes more sense to get to play both long and short term. So, does anyone happen to know what those differences are?

[Online][PBP][Beginner Friendly][Vampire][$15][Asynchronous] Ancient Nights: A Vampire in Rome

It is the year of Gnaeus Octavius and Gaius Scribonius Curio, also known as 678 ab urbe condita or, by some barbarians as 76 BCE. It is a few years after Sulla took Rome by force and led brutal purges of the senatorial classes. But those weren't the only ones who were affected as many vampires faced final death as well at the hands of his legions.

But now, Sulla has retired and died. Peacefully in his sleep no less. Slowly, the kindred of Rome have been rebuilding. At the same time, vampires from elsewhere see plenty of opportunity in the city that is turning into the centre of the world and they are making inroads as well, especially in the aftermath of Sulla's purge. You are a younger vampire, sired by one of these foreign vampires and are being sent to Rome to prepare the way for your master.

Vampires don't really know what happened in the Eternal City, but they do know that somehow, vampires were wiped out in Rome and in many other cities nearby. So you are well aware that there might be great dangers there.

One thing that is important to note is that we won't use the official history of vampires given in any of the sourcebooks. It after all makes little sense for a mythological figure from a backwater somewhere in the east to be the progenitor of all vampires or for there to already be a lot of lore to work around. That said, vampires do keep themselves a secret for a plethora of reasons. When using a game with generations, it also works better when not half of the vampires are sixth generation or even lower.

[Online][PBP][Beginner Friendly][CoD][$15][Asynchronous] They shot the Sheriff, but they didn't shoot his deputy [Detective Game]

After several years in a big city, you craved peace and quiet. The position as a deputy on Ruby Island was the perfect opportunity for that. In the last decade, the only crime in the small community was occasional petty theft and a few tourists being drunk and disorderly. That has changed now the sheriff has been murdered and it's up to you to solve the murder.

How you go about it is up to you. There are plenty of NPCs to interrogate, the crime scene to investigate, or you could just arrest the first suspect who appears and conclude that you're done with the case.

The first case will be the murder of the sheriff, but later on there will be more cases. Just like in shows about investigators in small towns, Ruby Island will have a murder rate that makes most warzones look safe. All without losing the small town charm of course. We will be using the White Wolf systems, but no overt supernatural elements have been planned so far. Of course, if you like, we can also weave such things into the story.

This will really be a detective story like the countless small town murder mysteries, with your character as the lead or even only investigator and a community that might not have fully welcomed them yet. After all, who really trusts an outsider?

[Voice][Discord][CoD][$15][Ongoing][Thursdays, 7 PM CET][4/5 seats available] Pretty Little Liars: It's payback time, liArs

Hey there!

For quite a while now, I've been thinking about how to bring PLL to the tabletop and this game is one of the results. It's a roleplaying game, which is to say, all the players take on the role of a character they design. Of course, I can definitely help with the rules side of things so this should be perfectly suitable for someone who has never played a roleplaying game before. We will loosely use the Chronicles of Darkness rules, with some alterations to better fit the setting.

Intro:

You’re a group of friends who are united by several things. You’re not the most popular, you’re being bullied by Beth and her awful friends, and you want revenge. They’ve hurt you in so many ways, but now, you’ve come up with an idea to hit back. Anonymously, of course. You don’t want to risk their retaliation. But you, as a group, have decided to start digging for their secrets. And once you have those, you can hit them where it hurts. You can blackmail them and, hopefully, bring them down.

As for the ‘villains’, Beth is a given. She’s the one in charge of her little posse. But she’s not alone. Her so-called friends always surround her. And to properly hurt them, you will have to go after them as well. The trick is getting to them without getting into trouble yourself. They all have their flaws and weaknesses. It’s just a matter of finding out what it is. But beware, they will be investigating as well and try to find out who you are.

For your character, we’ll need a few things, which mostly means a basic description of who they are. Are they the quiet nerd who’s had enough? Are they the former queen bee who was dethroned by Beth? Did they get their love interest taken away by one of those horrible girls? There are so many options, but it’s good to know what it is. And one important aspect of it is how they were wronged so we can weave that in.

The only real restrictions on your character is that they should be in school, so everyone will be around sixteen. And very importantly, there won’t be anyone like Ezra around.

The setting isn’t in Rosewood, but another similar small town. Canon characters won’t show up so we can have all the creative freedom we could want. Instead, this story happens in Shadyhill. A friendly seaside town that has become a tourist destination for the well to do. Of course, all the usual high school tropes fully apply so put on your black hoodies and get ready to make their lives hell.

Your favourite mine density

Lately, I've started looking at custom games which are a bit larger than the usual one, and I'm thinking about what a good mine density would be. And I guessed that people here have probably done the same and have some thought about it!

Struggling with translucent minis

This might just be me, but I just started building the latest Dungeons and Lasers figures, and I'm really struggling with assembling the translucent miniatures. Somehow, I just can't see much in the way of the details of where parts are supposed to go and I'm strongly considering just spraying all the sprues before doing anything more. Has anyone else struggled with this?

[Online][PBP][Asynchronous][Beginner Friendly][WoD][$15] The Lone Wolf

You don’t know what happened. You felt threatened. There was a rush of blood in your veins. Like never before. A rush of strength and power. You felt your body change, fur ripping through your skin, bones twisting, your face distorting into a visage of terror. It hurt. But not nearly as much as you hurt them. They lie before you. In their own blood and guts. Dead. You can tell. You tore them apart, with your own hands. No. Not hands, claws. You did this.

You’re a killer. And although you might feel regret and shock, in the moment, you only felt exhilaration and a desire to kill and maim. A desire for their flesh and blood. Their taste is still in your mouth. You didn’t just kill them. You ate part of them. You’re a monster. You know it, in your heart. But you had your reasons. Right?

That is where we start this roleplay. After the first time you changed into the form of a wolf. You’re not one of the lucky ones, who have a family or friends go guide them through the First Change. No. You’re alone. Dealing with it on your own. You might have friends and family, but they’re not like you. They don’t change. They can’t do this sort of thing. Do you confide in them? Or do you hide? And what do you do with this new power, with spirits whispering in your ear?

So yes. This will be a solo werewolf RPG. We can use either the old or new World of Darkness rules because I know and have used all of them. We can also easily port concepts over to another version of the rules. The story will be about your character and how they interact with this new world. All paths are open to them, but all come with their own dangers and they know so little. And least of all, who can be trusted.

The game should be suitable for everyone, from veteran gamers to beginners and we will discuss where you'd like to set it.

[Online][Discord][Voice][September 12, 1 PM EST][WFRP][One-Shot][$15] A Night at the Tavern

The sun is setting in the town of Holzapfelkreuth which means that the usual band of misfits, outcasts, and creeps has gathered in The Alehouse by the Old Gallows, commonly known as just 'The Gallows'. These people are a diverse group, which makes them stand out from most other drinking groups. But Dieter, the owner, taverner, and ale taster doesn't mind them because they drink well and pay well.

The game will start at that evening, where these drinking buddies have met up and are enjoying their well-earned ale and enjoying the not so fine cuisine of The Gallows. While they're there, disaster strikes and these unlikely sorts will have to be the heroes that Holzapfelkreuth needs, even if it deserves better.

This leads our merry band into an investigation of the most horrible crimes imaginable and they will have to fight the forces of darkness, risking life, limb, and everything they hold dear.

Although this is a one-shot, it will be a complete adventure that I previously ran at conventions and with friends. It should be suitable for all levels of experience, from someone who has only ever heard the name of the game to someone who knows the exact geography of the Reikland and can tell us who all of the Electors are.

[Online][Campaign][Discord][PBP][All Time Zones][40K][Solo][$15] Rogue Trader: Get Rich or die Trying

Perhaps you won it in a very high stakes game of regicide. Perhaps you inherited it from a distant relative. Perhaps you were one of those few who are so powerful and so annoying that you were given it. But whatever happened, you now are the proud holder of a Warrant of Trade and have gotten your hands on a ship: everything you could possibly need to make your fortune amongst the stars. And that's exactly what you'll do. Or die horribly in the process of course. Being a Rogue Trader isn't safe.

We will start with you ready to set sail. There will be several leads to pursue and from there, we can go anywhere in the universe, wherever there's money to be made. The heart of this roleplay is to follow your character as they come into their own in their role and to see them rise to wealth, fame, infamy, or anything else.

This game doesn't depend on a deep knowledge of the setting or the game. A Rogue Trader is someone who lives at the edge of legality and the edge of the known universe, so anything someone might think they know can just be a little bit different.

[Online][Campaign][Discord][PBP][All Time Zones][3.5][Solo][$15] Where the Shadows Lie, or how to become an evil overlord

Sarnilla, the dark empress, the uniter, is dead. With an iron fist and dark magic, she brought countless peoples together and was on the verge of conquering the world when a small band of so-called heroes fought their way into her flying castle, avoided or killed her guards, and managed to slay the woman who had seemed unbeatable.

Now her followers are in disarray. Fleeing in all directions, fighting amongst themselves, or vanished back to whichever hell or part of the abyss they came from. But not you. You are one of her junior lieutenants. Ambitious, cunning, and with a dark heart.

You don't want to flee or to see the whole Empire of Darkness collapse into petty squabbles. No. You want to finish the job. And if that means a few more deaths, so be it. Of course, you will do things differently. Someone with your ambitions always has their own views on how things should be. But first, there is the matter of survival...

So yes. This campaign starts right where many other campaigns end. The forces of good, a party of great heroes, has killed the big bad and taken her stuff. You are one of the survivors on the other side and the job on top just opened up. How you go about seizing the opportunities this offers of course is up to you.

[Online][Discord][PBP][September 5, 7 PM CET][CoD][One-Shot][$15] Stacy the Vampire Slayer

Into every generation a slayer is born. One of them was Stacy. A few months ago, she was a regular girl in Shadyhill High, not someone who really stood out. But then, she was called. To most people, that meant that she became weird. She barely came to school but showed up in all sorts of places at night. That, and people saw her hanging out in cemeteries a lot. The general conclusion was that she was doing drugs. And now she's dead, found in the mall.

Your characters knew the stories, but they also knew another side of her. All of them have been saved by Stacy. Perhaps it was from a creepy guy with oversized teeth or from a fish-faced girl who threatened to drag them off for a very long swim in the ocean. Whatever happened, they know that Stacy was a hero.

For years I've been a huge Buffy fan and now, after marrying an even bigger fan, I think it would be fun to run a Buffy RPG. A little while ago, I did a test run of the Eden Studios Buffy RPG and unfortunately, the system wasn't that great. At least, not for me. So instead, I figured, why not run this story with another system? That quickly brought me back to the Chronicles of Darkness system that I regularly run and which has proven itself to be pretty adaptable.

The story is set in the Buffy TV universe, but not in Sunnydale and not involving the characters from the show. It's set a few years before the show takes place and is set in Shadyhill, Pennsylvania.

[Online][Campaign][Discord][PBP][All Time Zones][40K][Solo][$15] The rise of a Chaos Champion

Hello Reddit!

For most, to live in these times is to be one amongst untold billions, living in this cruelest and bloodiest regime imaginable. And out of those untold billions, none will be missed.

But not for you. There are those who not only seek their own path. Their own way to make a difference. There are those who succeed. Those who will be missed. Or at the very least, prayed that they disappeared like so many others.

Your character will be someone in the Imperium with that most terrible affliction. Doubt and the ability to think. Someone who thinks beyond a lifetime of indoctrination and who seeks another way. And in this universe, there are powers who aid such people. Who offer an alternative path. A path where they can be free. At just the tiniest of tiny prices. Their soul.

Who are they? They could be anyone. A brave space marine or guardsman, a pious member of the Sororitas, a hard-working clerk, a violent ganger, a spoiled noble. There are countless people within the Imperium, and everyone could be tempted.

And from there, we will take their story. From the first temptation to their rise on the path of glory. The powers that offer aid to your character will make them into a champion. Someone to bring darkness to the light. Someone to bring the truth to the slaves of the corpse emperor. But be warned. Those who rise the highest in the favour of Chaos also are those who can fall the deepest.

With that out of the way, the basic idea is that you play someone in the Imperium who is tempted by Chaos. Naturally, they won't just be a regular cultist to be sacrificed right away because that would make for a pretty boring story. No. They will be one of those rare few with the talent and drive to rise to the top.

This can of course take several forms, depending on who your character is and what you want. It could be that they want to cast their homeworld into darkness and ascend to daemonhood. But it could also be that they leave everything behind and seek to rise to command and to cut a swathe of destruction through the Imperium. Or who knows. They might even want to bring the whole thing down and tear the Emperor of his throne.

On their way, they will have to find ways to overcome their foes, gather followers, and achieve immortality.

The setting will be in the classic Imperium before Abaddon tore it in half and before any of the primarchs returned. That mostly is because I prefer the feeling of that era and because I know it a bit better. We will determine where exactly within the Imperium we start based on who your character is.

The story will take place in a play by post format. That should leave more space for the development of the character within the story and for more detail to be added. My plan is to respond at least once per day and that every response will move the story forward in some way.

This game should be suitable for anyone. From a complete beginner to an expert. That goes for both game systems and for the setting.

[Online][Campaign][Discord][PBP][All Time Zones][WoD][Solo][$15] A fledgling vampire's rise or fall: Vancouver by Night

Hello Reddit!

Welcome to Vancouver by night! In this play-by-post one-on-one roleplay you will take on the role of a regular inhabitant or visitor of the city who unknowingly draws the eye of a vampire. The story starts just before your character is embraced and we will explore how they find their place in the world of darkness. And, of course, see how they may rise or fall.

There are many things going on in the city, and your character will have a definite impact on them. And in the longer run, they will be able to shape events. Naturally, there will be plenty of NPCs, some of whom will also have to be partially designed by you. Or at least, have a basic concept given. After all, if there for instance is a spouse or parent, you should have a say about who they are.

As a play by post game, my goal as a storyteller is to post at least once per day in a way that moves the story and character forward in some way. We will reserve rolls for the most relevant bits to keep things moving. The core of this game will be character development and really exploring the world of darkness. Action will be a less important element and will be reserved for crucial dramatic moments. After all, what is a mere neonate to do against the power of the elders?

This game is open to everyone, from someone who has never played a game before to someone who knows the whole metaplot by heart. I can however say that the focus will be local and on the main character and their relations with the rest of the world.

In a vampire game, there can definitely be darker themes and we will discuss beforehand what works for both of us.

Looking for players for an online oneshot TTRPG session set in the Buffyverse (15.08, 7 PM, CET)

For years I've been a huge Buffy fan and now, after marrying an even bigger fan, I think it would be fun to run a Buffy RPG. This is planned to be a oneshot adventure, which is to say that it's going to be finished in a single session. It's meant to be suitable for people who have never played a tabletop RPG before so everyone is welcome.

For characters, there are several archetypes available. There is no issue with multiple people picking the same one but I do have a single request. The characters do need names after all, so it would be great if you could come up with one. All characters will also have a single benefit from the list below. That’s a small thing that makes them stand out a little more, like having a car or basic medical training. Of course, I’m also open to suggestions.

The plan is to play through Discord. I made a server there where we can do dice rolls and voice chat. If you don't have Discord, you can make an account and download it here. We will play on August 15, at 7 PM CET, which is 1 PM EST.

For those who haven't played a tabletop roleplaying game before, the concept is really simple. The players take on the role of a character in the game. They decide what this character does and dice rolls decide if it's successful. The Game Master (in this case that's me) decides what dice should be rolled and plays all the other characters and determines what happens in the world. When rolling dice, we use an online dice roller that will roll a number of ten-sided dice. That number is determined by your character's abilities. All dice that come up as an 8 or higher are a success. Often, one success will do but for harder tasks, you'll need multiple. Of course, it will be explained in greater detail in the game.

Archetypes:

Sports Jock

Queen Bee

Juvenile Delinquent

Regular Geek/Bookworm

Theatre Kid

Stoner

Benefits:

Has a car

Medical internship

Keys to the library

Police connection

Rich parents

Paranormal interest

Intro:

Into every generation a slayer is born. One of them was Stacy. A few months ago, she was a regular girl in Shadyhill High, not someone who really stood out. But then, she was called. To most people, that meant that she became weird. She barely came to school but showed up in all sorts of places at night. That, and people saw her hanging out in cemeteries a lot.
