Protein and Calories

My mom has started a new diet. She's eating under 2000 calories (which is way too little for her size and activity), but believes it's fine because she's still getting enough protein. Her main goal is to lose weight. I'm worried she'll lose weight + muscle, but she says she won't lose muscle because she's getting enough protein and exercise. I still don't think this is healthy. Some days she even eats under 1000 calories. She doesn't even use olive oil or seasonings to cook anymore. Just boils chicken and broccoli. When I asked her how long she'll do this, she says until she's 180lb (she's 230lb). I don't know how quickly or slowly she'll get to her goal. Is this safe long term?

Dog Bite

We put dogs that get lunch in kennels. A dog was still in her kennel when her owner came to pick her up. She didn't have any food left, but refused to get out. This is usually okay because when they want a break from the other dogs, we let them have one, but since she was getting picked up, she had to come out. The only guy that can handle her is on vacation for the week so I had to get her. I called her a bunch of times and it didn't work. I tried treats, that didn't work. I even tried tilting the kennel, but she was pretty much doing a handstand in it and quickly ran back in when I put it down. I was forced to use the slip lead which no one can put on her except the one guy who's not here and I was alone at the time.

Instant attack on my arms and hands. I had to pull her out the crate, but once she was out she acted like she was the happiest dog to be leaving and let me put everything else on with no problem. I was actively bleeding when I gave her to her owner who refused to believe that her dog did it.

Owner: "My dog doesn't bite. What did you do?"

Me: "I was taking her out of the crate. She only tolerates one staff member and he's not here"

Owner: "My dog is friendly to everyone, it has to be something you did. Why was she in a crate?"

Me: "She's tried to bite all but one staff member. And you brought lunch, we crate them so they can eat in peace."

Owner: "I never said to crate her. And if she's so aggressive why hasn't she been kicked out?"

Me: "As long as there is one staff that can handle them and they aren't seeking people or dogs out to bite, then they are allowed to come."

Owner: "Well feed her in the lobby or something. She bit you because she doesn't get crated at home. She doesn't like it, that's what she was trying to tell you."

Me: "Okay."

Boss sided with the customer. She will be fed in the lobby from now on. Not asking questions because I won't be handling her anymore. I hope whoever has to feed her tomorrow has more luck than I do, especially getting the lead on her to take her to the back when she's finished since no one here can touch her or put the slip lead on without her biting.

Edit: I'm not mad at the dog. The bites don't hurt at all. Just sharing.

Coworker refuses to fully dry dogs

I work at a dog daycare. We sometimes have to give the dogs a bath. My coworker loves doing baths. It gets him out of work for 5 - 10 minutes, he doesnt have to be so close to he barking (which is a major bother for him), and he gets to "relax" (give a half assed bath and be on his phone most of the time).

I'm able to ignore the terrible baths, even when the dog is still dirty after, because much of the time it was free and was to get something like pee or poop off them. What bothers me is when he does a full bath, put them in their little area to dry, then gets annoyed with how loud the dryer is and takes the dog out still wet. If I'm here, I'll try to bathe the longer or thick double coated breeds because the absolutely need the be fully dried, but sometimes he beats me to it. He's left an Alaskan Malamute wet to the touch and an Australian Shepherd damp on the body with it's chest dripping water.

He says he doesn't like to leave them in the dryer so long. I say, use a towel first, then the high velocity dryer, and then the normal dryer. He says all of that isn't necessary.... It is very necessary when the risk of hot spots and matting are high. We don't have good air flow or air conditioning in our building, and it's all indoor so they can't dry "naturally" as he puts it. Some dogs are wet for literal hours. And if I try to properly dry them, he makes an issue about me "playing manager" and "undermining him and acting like he's not doing his job". And he'll simply wait until I go on break or lunch to turn the dryer back off.

Don't even let me start about how he loves bathing the poodles (they're usually used to getting groomed and well behaved in the bath), but doesn't like to fully dry or brush them after.

Lost my whistle 😔

I got braces because I had gaps in my teeth, the biggest being between the two front teeth. It took me such a long time to learn how to whistle growing up, and I've come to the sad realization that I was literally just blowing air through my front gap. Like, I sort of knew that's what was going on because when I said a word that started with s or a soft c, I would sometimes whistle on accident (yes, like Herbert the pervert lol), but I'm actually so upset knowing I never really learned how to whistle. What am I supposed to do? I used to he able to imitate bird calls, now when I try it's super quiet if I can get anything out at all. Someone teach me the mythical ways of whistling without a gap so I can get the only talent I had back! 😫

I need help with veterinary bills

Hi, I recently inherited two dogs, Gizmo and Lily after the death of one aunt and the hospitalization of the other. I've handled much of their care so far and will continue to do so, but the vet they go to does not offer payment plans, and I do not qualify for care credit or scratch pay. I've tried getting loans, but was denied as my income is too low and I'm already in a ton of debt. I've also started selling things that I no longer need or want, and have started doing medical studies for the stipends, but with these new care estimates I know I'll be saving well into next year. So, in order to get surgery Gizmo done in a timely manner, I ask for much needed help.

This old man needs tooth extractions and it is estimated to cost $2700. I will also be adding what I can to this fund every two weeks when I get paid, but both dogs need work done before the extraction can happen so I can only save so much. I'm not the richest member of the family, but I am the only one willing to care for them and get what they need done after years of neglect. Please help me get Gizmo's surgery so he can live a long(er) happy life. I thank you for whatever you can spare.

(P.S. His age is a typo, he is only 10 years old)

I'm afraid I'll be fired if I make a request. What do I do?

I work at a place where money is valued before safety and wellbeing. While my constant fear of being hurt on the job has faded, now I have a different problem. I'm so tired. There were 6 employees and now there are 5 of us. Of course, being the newest, I was forced to pick up the hours. I didn't mind at first, but now it's too much. I'm feeling so overworked. All I do is work and sleep nowadays.

I've asked my boss if they plan to hire anyone, but they feel like they can't trust anybody and admit that they haven't started looking for a replacement because they like how things are now. I want to ask for less hours so badly, but my coworker warned me that when they tried that the boss shorted their hours until they were only coming in about 4 hours a week total. They said the only reason they got back to regular hours was because another employee had quit because of similar reasons to mine. I absolutely need this job, but I'm exhausted. I sleep on my breaks, lunch, and commute to and from work. I'm afraid I'll get fired if I ask for less hours. What should I do?

Georgia Need A Home

All about this sweet Georgia peach:

This girl loves people. I mean loves. If she could sit in your lap all day like the tiny Chihuahua she thinks she is then she would. And while romping around with the other dogs is all fun and dandy, she's definitely a "people person" and prefers sticking close by her folks. Due to her past, she warms up quicker to women and children (whom she absolutely adores) than she does men, but once she realizes she can trust you, you have her heart no matter what you are. She's playful, intelligent and sweet making her the perfect companion for a family looking for a young, active pup.

Georgia is estimated to be a year old, UTD on vaccinations and spayed. She's very small for a German Shepherd and due to that we believe that she and her brother are mixes. She is friends with a purebred Border Collie and they are similarly sized. She has not been cat tested, but does have a medium-high prey drive so a home with cats and small animals might not be the best choice. While she like dogs, we think she'd also enjoy being the only dog in the home. If you are interested in her and have another dog, we would like to let it be known that she will resource guard food from other dogs, but not from humans.

Backstory:

Georgia was found wandering the streets of downtown L.A. with her brother, Spinner, where they were very clearly abused and starved. A friend took them to the vet where they found no microchips so they brought them back to SF with them and we've been caring for them ever since. We've kept them out of the shelter and have gotten to know them well enough to be able to tell you what you'd be getting into. We're confident in answering any questions you may have, and if we don't know, we will be honest about it.

Adoption Info:

We're offering a two week "warm up" period where if you adopt her and it doesn't work out, you can return her to us no questions asked and without any fees. If you're interested and would like to meet them, please let me know. Feel free to PM me or comment with any questions you may have.

Young GSDs looking for their forever homes

Hi, I know of two young German Shepherds in search of homes. They were found wandering the streets of L.A. very clearly abused and starved. A friend took them to the vet out where they found no microchips and brought them to SF. We've been caring for them ever since. They're estimated to be a year old, one is female, one is male. They're on the small side for GSDs so we think they may be mixes. The female, Georgia, is especially petite, and is the size of her Border Collie friend. The male, Spinner, is taller, but very lean and is smaller than his Doberman Pinscher friend. Both are UTD on vaccinations and neutered.

About Georgia: She loves people and is good with other dogs. She has not been cat tested, but does have a high prey drive so a home with cats and small animals might not be the best choice. She absolutely adores woman and children, but is weary of men - though she warms up with time. While she like dogs, we think she'd also enjoy being the only dog in the home. She'd make the perfect companion for a family looking for a young, active pup.

About Spinner: Spinner is a silly guy. He likes dogs and people equally, but like Georgia, also may not do well with cats. He is a sweet boy who would spend the day curled up in bed with you for hours if you let him, but would also happily run a couple miles with you or bring you his toys so you can play with him. It's believed they were abused due to the wound on his head. He appears to have been struck with a blunt object which resulted in an obvious disability. It doesn't affect his wellbeing or cognitive abilities, but he does have trouble with coordination.

We've kept them out of the shelter and have gotten to know them well enough to be able to tell you what you'd be getting into. We're offering a two week "warm up" period where if you do adopt one of them and it doesn't work out, you can return them to us no questions asked, and without any fees. if you're interested and would like to meet them. We're offering

Vet bill advice

I'll have two dogs in my care starting August 1st with no clear date of when they'll go home. They need veterinary care that neither owner can help with. The bills would be completely mine. My mom thinks it's a bad idea to put so much care into dogs that aren't mine, but I've known them for years and want what's best for them. Is it better to invest in pet insurance or attempt a "buy now pay later" type of thing where some company pays the bill and I pay them off?

Do I have to walk the dog?

Hi, I'm currently taking care of my aunt's senior dog. He's 10 years old and was carried most of his life (to the point where his paw pads are still soft like a puppy and people think he's a puppy because of that). Is it okay to keep not walking him? A friend told me he needs to learn how to be a dog and that I'm enabling bad behavior. I don't see it as bad though. He's a small breed with low energy (Shih Tzu), a healthy weight, and will happily pee and poo outside, but after that he prefers to come inside. He's not scared to go outside at all and will walk if you make him, but he doesn't care to. He does his business and goes inside, with or without you. And I don't think it's fair to force him stay out if he doesn't want to be, especially because of his age. In the house, I play with him and let him chase me around until he's tired. He's happy. My friend says he still needs to go on walk and it's neglecting him if I don't, but I think it'd be wrong to get him used to a lifestyle that won't be kept up with. He goes out with me all the time and I will have him walk, I just don't dedicate time throughout the day to walk him like she does with her dog. She'll ask if I walk him and the answer is always no, but that doesn't mean he didn't go out, it just wasn't a "walk" as she defines it. Like I'll take him to the corner store with me or if my family goes out, he comes with us- I just don't go on 30 minute walks with him. Is this bad? Should I start dedicating time to walk him?

Hey, I'm trying to make some money to help my aunt pay for surgery for her dog so I'm getting rid of the less important things:

I have a canon dslr camera and lenses for $500 (value $675) and it comes with memory card.

I have asus desktop and gaming monitor for $650 (value $800) and it comes with keyboard and mouse.

I have two 10 gallon fish tanks for $75, they come with filters, pumps, and lights. Alone, I'll sell them for $20 each.

Urgently ISO Housing for Senior!

Hi all. My sister's client (a 70+ y.o) is being evicted. Their property manager is having all of their things removed from the partment today and will be removing them tomorrow. I don't know how they'll do that as this person physically unable to move on their own. I'm guessing they'll pick them up and put them outside? Maybe call police and have them arrested? Either way they will be removed one way or another. The client's social worker told them to try to go to a hospital and see how long they can stay. That's literally the only option the social worker had for them.

Does anyone know of any places that will take in seniors for longer-short term? I guess the client gets money every couple of months and will have it in July, but as of right now has nothing to their name except their hospital bed, medical supplies, and medication. Apparently their adult child (who was supposed to be paying the rent, but has not been- which is why they're getting evicted) has been stealing the money and taking it for themselves. This client is in desperate need of help and while my sister would love to take them in- the person physically cannot fit into the actual apartment or even the building.

Please let me know of any resources I can share with her. Her client has until tomorrow. Thank you

When there's already a 30=1, dog to human ratio and my manager says she need to go "run an errand" (I know I'm gonna be alone for at least 2 hours)

I work at a dog daycare. I was trained for 2 hours my first day and have been on my own since. According to my boss, even a 20=3 ratio is too many people and there would be no work for a 3rd person to do so it's likely a mistake made during scheduling. We have two rooms and a small fenced area. On a particular busy day, there were about 20 dogs in each room and we had a couple of seniors with no supervision in the fenced area since there was only 2 of us. We were instructed to check on them every "once in a while"- though, that's how we're expected to treat them whether it's busy or not because "they don't really do anything anyway".

Apparently the person I replaced complained about this... that's why I replaced them. I honestly don't think a place like this should be in operation. The only reason I'm working here is because out of the hundreds of places I applied to over 7 months, of course this was the one place that hired me. I can only do my best to make sure these dogs are safe and cared for until I can find something else.

Don’t work = don’t eat

There are some days where I just don’t want to work…at all...ever again.

If I don’t work, I wont get money. If I don’t get money, I can’t buy food. If I don’t buy food, I won’t have anything to eat. If I don’t have anything to eat, I will starve.

I’m safe of this and I’ve accepted this as the truth. It doesn’t stop me from not wanting to go to work.

The only job I didn’t feel like this was a job that I got fired from. I haven‘t found anything fulfilling since. I have stopped working and eating before, I was at peace with the thought of starving because I didn‘t want to work that badly. The only reason I didn’t die was probably because my mom starting bringing me food and I was getting fruit from giveaway boxes of food in the neighborhood. Is this my life now? What can I do to not feel this way?
