The Offspring is a popular episode but I have a major issue with the plot
The episode is something of a reboot of the Measure of a Man and it ignores that previous episode's events.
Measure of a Man was about the rights of artificial beings like Data and it established a few things:
Starfleet had no laws on the subject. It was established during the trial.
Picard himself said the court decision will be far reaching as it will determine future cases and Starfleet's attitude toward artificial races.
The Offspring however seems to completely forget this. By law, Data and Lal were both sentient with similar rights as humans. Yet nobody made reference to this, and acted like it's a new thing when Starfleet planned to separate Lal from Data. What's salt on the wound is that Data didn't even put up a fight to prevent that and was ready to comply, likely to show his lack of emotions. Picard had to step in and order to disobey. This makes no sense as Data disobeyed Starfleet orders multiple times when he thought doing so is the best.
All in all, the whole Lal plot should have been resolved by simply referencing the court hearing that ruled in favor of Data and acknowledged his sentience. But instead, the episode gave us a drama with an ending that had pretty much the exact same lesson as Measure of a Man.
Higher classs windows of the medieval era
After the extremely informative result of the currency post, I thought I try this one too: I have a haunted mansion scenario in my story, and there's some looking/going through windows scenes. How exactly these windows looked? Even though it's a noble's home, glass wasn't window material back then. However, I've tried researching but I couldn't find proper information on how mansion-like houses windows looked.
Currency question
I'm trying to set down rules on money for my medieval fantasy setting and I'd prefer giving it some historical accuracy (I know, medieval is a vast timeframe).
From what I know, silver was more common among non-noble people like what a traveler would be than gold that's all over fantasy. However, I don't have a frame of reference for how much equipment like mid-tier swords and chain maille costs let alone more exotic items (only that some spices worth their weight in gold).
So, any historical help on the matter is welcome.
Offering an option with the comment "if you haven't done it already".
Grinning because the said option is actually an instant death.
I'll just put this out in case someone likes reading fanfics with theme like "Sins of the Past" and "Locked Up and Tied Down". I tried writing it as if it was a Xena episode. It takes place not long before "the Deliverer."
Summary: The village of Lyros, ransacked by Xena's army years ago is now hounded by a mysterious monster. To make amends for her crimes, Xena forges an uneasy alliance with a warrior from Lyros, ready to face the elusive creature as well as the possible condemnation for her past atrocities.
