Listening to the LotR Audiobook narrated by the excellent Rob Inglis atm and just heard the above quote. So what about Tom Bombadil? Did Gandalf mispeak; or is he saying that TB isn't 'alive' in the physical sense? 🤔
Bought this at auction maybe a decade ago. Wasn't cheap or expensive I imagine I paid around £32 or way less than $50 for it. Handwritten daily recollections of a navy man on board a ship off the coast of Wet Africa in the Aftermath of the Battle of Dakar (1940). Mentions everyday things like seeing dolphins, type of fruit brought aboard, a comrades 21st birthday, a trip to church one day, another at port in Freetown, Sierra Leone. Couldn't quite see the name of ship as the writing can be miniscule and near indecipherable in part. Do have the name and rank and address of British sailor though. Here's some quick notes on the ''waters'' they navigated.
The diary is written sequentially in 1941, it captures the daily reality of the tense, post-battle West Africa Blockade. Following the failed attack the previous year, Dakar remained hostile and under the control of the pro-Nazi Vichy French regime. Royal Navy ships were tasked with aggressively patrolling the coast of Senegal to intercept, chase, and board French merchant ships. Enforcing this blockade required Allied ships to sail right on the edge of the coastline, constantly risking drawing fire from Dakar’s massive shore batteries and the damaged battleship Richelieu. Additionally, the region had become a major hunting ground for German submarines. The sailor’s ship likely spent days hunting U-boats and escorting Allied convoys coming out of Freetown, Sierra Leone, which served as the main British naval base in the area.

Hi, what are your thoughts on buying longer words in the dot AI space, like 9-11 letters. Obviously ones with some utilitarian meaning or practical 'application'. Since the dot com era saw most words in the English dictionary taken up,...is sticking with tech adjacent verbiage the limits with dot AI? Thanks.
A buddy of mine is a 'car guy' (petrolhead) huge Topgear fan and also has a pretty good taste in music. We're out driving the other night and he mentions wanting a new memory/usb stick but without the FM capability...long story short, I came back home later and bought USB.FM 😄 Worth any $$?
Researching for due diligence I read there are no more English dictionary words extant in the dot com arena. Think I found one yesterday, though it's pretty obscure admittedly; and that's 'Leucic' which is a condition similar to Albino in animals (lack of pigmentation, white fur/feathers); or a type of hydroxy acid in chemistry. Not worth much but a nice little addition to my collection. Thoughts?

Apacite is a tool that automatically formats academic citations and source lists according to the guidelines of the American Psychological Association. It handles complicated rules of listing where multiple authors names appear. This saves writers 'check and edits' in their papers.
To use it, a writer adds instructions to their document setup where they want to credit a source. The system then places the references into the text and builds a perfectly alphabetised reference list.
However, this tool is locked into an older version of the official style manual and cannot easily adapt to the latest updated rules.
Open source so no TM, could be re-utilized?, legacy appeal? Thoughts?
