Cold Pan Strip Steaks
Strips were 2-for-1 at New Seasons, so about $9 a pop.
Cooked in an un-oiled carbon steel pan on med-high for three minutes, flipped and turned to medium heat. Flipped every 2-minutes until the steaks hit 115, then rested for 5 minutes.
Who made this?
Hole appeared overnight. The hole itself is 2.5-3” wide, and goes straight (sideways) under our patio.
A basic internet search says pocket gopher, but it also says they rarely leave their holes open. What do you guys think?
Our Little Weirdo
1911 Bungalow - 1 bath, 2 beds (if you squint), ~1,000 sf on the main floor. Small finished basement office.
When we moved in, we weren’t sold on the plan… it seemed off.
Four doors in one bathroom? Check.
A bedroom in the center of the house? Sure, why not?
But over the years, it’s grown on us and become our home. Incredibly cozy, very easy to entertain in, and doesn’t suffer from the all-in-one living/dining/kitchen. So far it’s perfect. Anyone else have a bizarre plan they love?
Ask again when our daughter’s a tween.
First Smashburger at Home
Double patties, American cheese, pepper bacon, shredded lettuce, chopped onion, mayo and mustard.
House is smoky AF, but so worth it.
Root damage - feeling anxious
Yesterday sidewalk repairmen cut through a 7” thick root feeding our 80’ tall, 120yo Giant Sequoia… about 15’ from the trunk.
Just an hour earlier I had taken great pains to explain that no roots were to be cut. I even agreed to extend the length of the concrete work to avoid another similar-size root.
Now we’re waiting for a city roots inspection, watering the exposed roots daily to prevent damage, and generally being anxious about irreversible damage.
City people I’ve spoken with have mentioned damages, etc., especially since the contractor was supposed to get a permit and inspection for cutting such a large root in a right-of-way. But we’re wondering how that’s even assessable… the tree is irreplaceable.
Anyone have any experience with this kind of damage on a similar tree? I know it can take years for consequences of this kind of fuckery to show themselves.
Bún Chà Sandwich
Made Bún for dinner last night and scraped this together for lunch.
Leftover (homemade) Vietnamese meatballs, nước chấm-pickled cucumbers, shredded lettuce, mint and cilantro, and a big squeeze of Kewpie mayo on a cheap bun.
Two and a half pounder.
Ribeye, dry-brined all day, smoked at ~300F, rested for 30mins, then seared over a ripping fire.
Bark City - Portland, OR
Three meat tray, $41: Ribs, brisket, turkey. Jalapeño mac, beans, pickles. These guys don’t miss, it’s delicious and super consistent.
First time smoking a steak, rather than just grilling. It’s a little over, but is the way.
(Vegetarian) Mom is out, so my 5yo and I are sharing a big ol’ smoked ribeye…
… and watching K-Pop Demon Hunters (again).
Kiddo gave me a massive cold. Haven’t been able to taste food for a week.
Sausage, American Cheese and Egg, on Orange-Cardamom French Toast.
