I’m an OOS student, and some of my online gigs are finally picking up and I’m making ~5k a month, would this be enough to qualify as financially independent for the next academic year?

(Got in for EECS if this makes a difference) I’ve made my peace with the fact that this year is gonna be 80k (🫩) but I truly plan on staying in California for the long term, I’m not coming just to get an education and dip. I’m planning on filing taxes for the new fiscal year there, I’ll be getting my voter ID and drivers license there, and I’ve heard the hardest part about getting in state tuition is proving financial independence. So I was wondering, would this be enough to seal the deal for the next year?

MIT BWSI is a huge feeder into the T20s, don’t listen to the negativity on here calling it mid (UC Berkeley OOS EECS ‘30 + BWSI ‘25)

I was one of the in person courses (AUV), and while we didn’t place directly into MIT, all the seniors in our cohort had amazing results (1 Princeton, 1 Stanford, 3 Cornell, 3 UMich, 1 Georgia tech, 1 Berkeley (me)) idk why people are saying it’s a mid program and not a feeder, it definitely is, at least from my experience. The year before us for this course also had 2 MIT admits from around the same size, so this year, there should also be an MIT admit or two. I understand that compared to some of the other programs, it’s definitely new, so if yall have any questions pls hmu. Last year, I used to look at the discussion threads from the previous years and look for who got into my course so I could DM asking for stats 💀💀

Uhhh is anyone else’s parents being really mean to them right now after committing 💀

I recently got in for Berkeley, and my parents were set for me to go to our in state flagship (Texas) and they bought me a studio apartment to have to myself. Obviously that plans shot now, but the thing that’s getting me is I never even wanted this apartment. Of course I was grateful for it, but they were the ones who rushed off to get it April and now that we’re having trouble finding someone to transfer it to, they’re putting everything on me. I already feel really guilty that they have to pay so much for tuition, and that parts all on me, but now this apartment mess which isn’t ever something I wanted is now being pinned on me too. I also feel like they’re criticizing my every little thing now, things that don’t need to be critiqued. I don’t even know, this just makes me excited to leave for college, everyone else’s parents whose kids got into such a good university is celebrating with them and so proud, meanwhile mine are just making me feel so shitty.

Anyone from Texas committing to Berkeley for engineering?

I’ve heard that majority Berkeley students are California residents, and this is my first time being so far away from home and it would be amazing to know a familiar face!

To all incoming seniors who are hoping to make MIT your home for the next 4 years: forget about it

I was OBSESSED with the prospect of going to MIT beginning of this school year, and when I got rejected in March, I felt like my whole world collapsed and I was stuck in bed for a solid week since the plan I was building for myself for the next 4 years disintegrated so quickly. I wish I had someone tell me to not make MIT my dream school; sure, go for it and apply, but go in with the expectation that you’re getting rejected, because that is the most likely outcome. If you get in, then congrats, have fun celebrating! I think I was so hung up on the IDEA of MIT and not MIT itself. I know this will most likely fall on deaf ears since I’m not so sure my past self would’ve listened to this post, but I feel like I had to make it. I went to an MIT summer program and got rejected, nothing is a sure thing. However, I am proud to announce I’m committing to UC Berkeley EECS, go bears!! My classmate was also rejected from MIT, and every single ivy he applied for, but he just committed to Stanford and is beyond happy to be going there. I promise it will all work out! (P.S. I know a lot of students have a tough time with the alum on here, as did I. They can be a little rough, and I certainly do think they could be more kind and remember that these are all confused 17 year olds who are hoping for the best, but these posts do get repetitive after a bit of time. Understanding both ways would be amazing)

Unpopular opinion: fear and sometimes jealousy really are the best motivators

(I’m the first in my family to attend college here for some background info.) Before everyone jumps on my back for feeling jealous towards my friends and peers, remember that we’re all humans and this is a natural human emotion. The important thing is that it’s never acted upon in a harmful way. I was ranked in the top 1% in my class of 900 and there were about 5 ppl I was in a head to head competition with, and all of them were my friends. I was horribly jealous; they were all younger siblings, and their older siblings all went to very nice colleges. Their siblings + parents got them opportunities I never even heard of or would have had access to. I was proud of them, because even though they got these opportunities they were all incredibly smart and worked to keep up, but I also was very jealous. I never once slandered them or talked about them behind their backs, but the one thing that I couldn’t help was feel jealous. I was also scared I’d fall behind and never be able to catch up. That motivated me to push beyond limits I never thought I could, form connections I never would have otherwise, and also broaden my perspective beyond just prestige. I got into a top university and will be going, but on this sub I see people so quickly jump on someone for being jealous. Take this as ur reminder it’s ok to be jealous, as long as u never act on it in a bad way. If u can’t get rid of it, use it to motivate u. If yall ever want to talk, my dms r open!

Why do people readily jump and put themselves near 200k debt for Stanford?

Not hating cuz I would’ve done the same if I was in their position, but I’ve been accepted into Berkeley off the waitlist and I’m just trying to rationalize why Berkeley wouldn’t be the same. Sure Stanford is more personalized, but would that aspect really make it worth it to go into debt for Stanford and not for Berkeley? I guess I’m just trying to break apart my own understanding of why I would’ve been willing to do it for Stanford but hesitating for Berkeley

This might be the wrong place for this, but how do I break my leasee for my studio on Union on 24th as a previously incoming freshmen?

I was originally planning to attend UT for CS this fall, but I got off the waitlist at UC Berkeley, and I can’t be stuck paying 1900 dollars a month for an apartment I won’t be living in 😭😭 does anyone have any idea what I could do?

🚨 UT Austin Studio Lease Takeover @ Union on 24th 🚨(tagged as lease takeover but open to subletting)

I was originally planning to attend UT for CS this fall, but I got off the waitlist at UC Berkeley, so I'm looking for someone to take over my lease at Union on 24th.
The floor plan is The Dollie - S3 studio, 315 sq ft, $1915/ month but I'm willing to negotiate. The location is nice, you walk out of the apartment and UT is right down the street, and it's one of the safer, closer options to campus.
Also doesn't have the utility/plumbing/elevator/mold issues that other apartment complexes there (rise and moon tower) do
DM me if interested!!

Why is everyone on this sub so split?

I see like 60-70% of people saying it’s all gone to shit and esp for new grads that their best bet is to go to a top tech school network there and then apply through the connections; seems like anything out of top 10 tech schools people treat u like ur already homeless. And then the other 30-40% are saying a second golden of CS is coming esp with relation to robotics and what not, and that these companies hesitating to hire new grads are gonna feel it in 2-3 years and by that time they’ll start hiring new grad. So I guess my question is, which take is right? I’m either going to Berkeley or UT, and all this discourse has been scaring me 😭

Which would have the better job outcomes: UC Berkeley (EECS) vs UT Austin (in state, CS + planning to add applied math)

Hey yall, i need some advice, i got into UT CS January 15th (god is great 🙏🏼🙏🏼) and was set to go to Texas but I got off the waitlist for UC Berkeley EECS engineering. I don't know what to do, cost wise this really does tank me.
My parents would help out but l'd be stuck taking out a massive amount in student loans. It's 50k more per year that I'd be paying for Berkeley over UT, is it worth it? I'm fine taking out loans if the return offers are that much more substantial. I’ve been leaning UT cost wise because I’ll be graduating debt free at UT and because I’m scared at Berkeley I’ll just be mediocre and won’t be able to stand out whereas at UT, I already have FRI and I feel like I could be near top percentile of my class.

Almost a year ago I made a post asking tips from anyone who had gotten into Berkeley EECS OOS, and I’m happy to say I was recently accepted off the waitlist for it!

Also still deciding between this and my flagship uni (UT austin, think I’m leaning more this way actually ), but I’m happy that I’m in a place where my biggest problem is deciding between these two amazing schools! At UT, I’d graduate debt free and I have an amazing apartment lined up freshmen through senior year and wouldn’t have to worry about dorms, communal bathrooms or any of the other typical freshmen’ year problems. Berkeley, if I go, id have to pay 30-40k more per year and be stuck in a triple dorm without any of the comfortabilty UT provides. Me from a year ago would’ve been shocked at me not just dropping everything to go to Cali, but I’m happy that my perspective of things has changed so much. If anyone wants any advice I’d be happy to give it, or has any advice to give me about my situation, it’d be much appreciated!
