Is no one co sleeping? Emily Oster

where do most kids sleep at night?

According to her data, no one is bed sharing? As someone who has partially co-slept since my baby was around 5 months, I’m surprised. I was dead set on never co-sleeping, then reality set in for me. I personally know ppl who co-slept, not everyone. And if you look at any social media, many ppl do it. I want to say people are lying but at the same time…why would ppl lie on an anonymous questionnaire.

EDIT: this isn’t a post where I’m asking about OPINIONS on co-sleeping. I’m asking if it’s the reality. Also, shaming it IS NOT HELPFUL as all it does is make people lie. I’m merely asking if it’s the reality or ppl are lying.

Also, the United States is one of a few countries that actively discourages bed sharing. There are many countries where it is considered normal.

Is it worth it to get new wiring for washer/dryer hookups in our apartment?

Hello!

We live in a rent controlled apartment that has absolutely no supervision (pros and cons). Our landlord would absolutely not do this (coming from his own pocket), but would allow us to do it. We don’t have wiring in our apartment right now. Do you think it would be worth it to get it done? I’m not sure how much it would cost, but I imagine the convenience would be nice. I’m really not sure how labor intensive the process is. Thoughts? It is an old building (1955 ish)…some remodels but not much. There is a laundry on site but it’s always broken.

How has becoming a mother changed you?

I can say this, a year out, that motherhood is the most beautiful experience I’ve had and I love being my baby’s mom. I love my little family and my life…even if I’m exhausted. I look my worst but I’m way more comfortable in my body than I ever was before. And I have this protectiveness that makes me stand up for myself. I’m softer but more assertive than I was before. Being able to say no is SO EASY. No guilt or worrying about it. There is this odd sense of freedom I have after becoming a mother. As a lifetime worrier/social anxiety haver, I just don’t care what ppl think anymore or feel the need to impress. Not that I’m rude or anything…just more self-assured.

The first 3/4 months were so hard. And it slowly got a little better to where I could see some light. I wouldn’t be able to say those things then. I was so worried that I made a mistake. That I wasn’t prepared to be a mom. That I wouldn’t be a good one. And what a heavy burden, to ruin your life and a baby. I wish I could be a friend to myself then. I was so scared of not being a good mom that it almost ruined the experience. I bought like 10 different swaddles because I was convinced each of them wasn’t right and I had to find the right one. Turns out, baby just didn’t like being swaddled so none of them worked lol. But I had spent so much time and money on things that turned out not to be so important. Something happened around 6 months where I just kind of let go of all the worried thoughts and feelings.

I’m curious how motherhood has changed everyone else? I read that your brain rewires after being a mother.

Sleep milk connection? Independent sleep

My baby recently turned 12 months old and the doctor expected us to have no more night milks and get on cows milk. We did switch to cows milk and it was pretty easy. However, getting baby off of the BOTTLE. Omg. I’m scared. He’s so attached to it and I know I made mistakes by not putting him to sleep without it when he was younger, yada yada yada. But we were just trying to survive. Our baby has never slept more than 4 hours at a time. I’ve been told that milk is the reason. But he is so emotional over it and there is a part of me that feels he isn’t ready. Also, I don’t know if I’m emotionally prepared for 3 weeks (how long the doctor said it would take) to get off the bottle. Also, he’s a 90th percentile baby in height and weight. I have tried to reduce to the limits recommended for milk by watering it down so it’s literally 2-4 ounce of milk with water. I was thinking of reducing to just water in the bottle…but then why not just get rid of it? Baby doesn’t like pacifiers and he’s a Velcro baby that we co-sleep with. Sleep has never been easy with the baby. He is ACTIVE and we have tried all the things. I’ve tried putting him down “drowsy but awake”. What does he do? WAKES UP AND HAS A MELTDOWN. Baby is making all the milestones, strong communicator, but sensitive. Sleep just has been hard.

I thought sleep would work itself out by now, as we did the routine, white noise machine…all the things. But baby still needs me next to him to sleep. AND A BOTTLE.

He still wakes up but as long as he has a bottle, he goes right to bed again. After 1 or 2, he does get upset if he is alone. I’ve tried everything and ultimately it just seems like baby isn’t ready?

Did anyone else have a similar experience? Is it the bottle that keeps him up? I’m a little hesitant to trust “sleep experts”, mainly because I’ve tried everything to some degree it feels and it just seems like different babies need different things. And I just don’t feel comfortable letting my Velcro baby cry it out. Id really appreciate knowing anyone’s experience with these things? You know, milk addictions. Sleep haters.
