What would you do with this old, highly specced 2021 Intel i9 iMac 27inch?

It was a beast in its time, costing $4000 with factory upgrades. Got me through middle school with my highly demanding Google Docs workflow. I no longer use it because I had to get an M3 air for highschool and recently upgraded to an M3pro pro (traded laptops with my mom).

Any ideas on what to use this iMac for? I was thinking something along the lines of a home server or ai agent or NAS but idk- be creative. It sits in a location that could be used as a community computer, although we all have our own macbooks, but I want to start using it again as it feels like a waste just sitting there. I also heard that older iMacs could have RAM upgraded which is cool.

Please give useful ideas below. I don't really wanna sell it because it's a beautiful machine and some sentimental value as it was a christmas gift from my parents.

Specs written from chat:

  • 2020 27-inch iMac Retina 5K
  • CPU: 3.6 GHz 10-core Intel Core i9
  • RAM: 16 GB
  • Storage: 1 TB SSD
  • GPU: Radeon Pro 5700, 8 GB

I also have an old 2020 MBP Intel i9 that is just lying around if you have ideas on what to do with that as well.

  • 16-inch MacBook Pro (2019)
  • CPU: 2.4 GHz 8-core Intel Core i9
  • RAM: 32 GB
  • Storage: 2 TB SSD
  • GPU: AMD Radeon Pro 5600M, 8 GB

thanks.

Why is everyone on this sub who is looking to buy a MacBook either a video editor or uses LLMs?

Probably asking if an M1 8/256gb can handle it as well in 2026.

Can you trade in multiple ipads at once when buying a new one?

I'm buying my grandma an ipad air m4 but was wondering if there was a way to trade in multiple of my old homebutton ipads from like 2018-2020 to get credit. I have no use for them and it would be nice to get some credit for it.

Ipad air 13' vs macbook neo for grandma who will be playing solitaire and maybe write some emails

Ever since my dad rearranged this room in my grandma's house and got rid of her pc, he got her an OBSURD samsung laptop that is absolutely OVERKILL for her uses. It was like 3000 dollars with 32gb of memory and 1tb storage and I don't think she has used it once. She has an iphone but I was thinking her computer should be an apple because she is old and needs something simple. Hopefully she will use her new device to play solitaire and write emails. I was so sure about the macbook neo at first, but then I saw her using the samsung touchscreen to play solitaire so I was deciding on the ipad air 13 inch with the magic keybouard. Any tips on getting my grandma an apple device to do these things? Thanks.

How to hide massive power bricks on your desk?

I have one from the display and one from my dock. My outlets are all above my desk and maybe if I install one underneath I can hide the bricks and make the cable management better?

Just bought my first Rimowa at the age of 15!

Yes, it was my own money and no, my parents are not really rich. Bought it in HK and not gonna lie there was no benefit buying it there vs the US but the staff were decently nice. I felt so much pressure and actually wanted to leave a couple of times but that might be on me. Coming back the the US now there is a big typhoon in HK but hopefully my flight doesn’t get cancelled again. Hopefully this is gonna be a suitcase that lasts many years and when I get older I’ll get a matching check in. I was deciding between the matte black and ink blue for so long but they brought out this green and I thought it was black at first so I got it because the color is so interesting.

Do you record all the time while flying? Even when flying for fun?

I record as soon as I take off no matter what. I guess if I crash I’ll have the footage of it. Do you record all the time? Or only when actually tryna be cinematic. Do you also record in the goggles?

Can we stop asking if the m1 is worth it in 2026? The m1 is alright but the glaze is crazy. It’s like a 6 year old computer not magic.

The m1 is alright but the glaze is crazy. It’s like a 6 year old computer not magic. Stop asking questions like is this m1 MacBook Pro with 8gb ram and 256 ssd suitable for shit like gaming and video editing and browsing. Why do you chose to spend money on something so old? You’re already halfway there just get something new.

Why has whoop never sent the 5.0 they promised automatically/ proactively to any of my family members who have been using whoop for almost two years.

My family all uses whoops. We all got the 4.0 about 2 years ago and so far none of us actually got the 5.0 as promised sent. My mom was forced to buy an MG subscription, and I had to reach out to whoop support myself telling them I’ve had the whoop for way over a year and they never sent me the new one. They finally agreed to send me the 5.0 as a “one time courtesy” but why didn’t they send it from the start. My grandpa, grandma, and dad are still on the 4.0 and there has been no indication that any 5.0 would get sent to them even though they’ve had it for almost two years. Please advise. Do I have to reach out again for every single one of them? Why can’t they just send it proactively like they promised.

Upgrading from 13 inch M3 air 16gb to 16 inch intel i9 pro 32gb for photo and video editing.

My uncle, who is one of the most famous photographers in China, is giving me his old intel i9 32gb so I can edit videos better. I have heard about some hate with Intel Macs, and I understand that my m3 is probably better than the i9, but the main thing going for it is the extra memory so I can do davinci resolve and Final Cut Pro projects better. What is the ideal setup? I plan to mostly use the pro as a plug in to my caldigit hub to display. Any tips for running the intel?

Bought an Avata 2 fly more in China for 875 dollars! Any complications with bringing it to the US? Can I take it out and activate it beforehand?

Got this avata 2 for a total of 6538 yuan or 960 USD including 2 years of dji care. The people there said I can use it even when I go back to the US and there shouldn’t be an issue. Can I take it out of the box and play with it now? I need to pair the dji care in 48 hours if I do so. Also the Chinese drone regulations are quite confusing and I can’t get a clear answer on how or where I am able to fly.

Anker Prime TB5 dock? Or Caldigit TS5?

I'm upgrading from a cheap 40 dollar dock and can't decide between the Anker Prime TB5 and the CalDigit TS5. My current setup is an M3 MacBook Air connected to a Samsung Odyssey G8 via DisplayPort with external SSDs, peripherals, and occasional video editing. I also occasionally use a 2020 16" Intel MacBook Pro. My current dock has annoying wake-from-sleep issues in clamshell mode and some faint buzzing with USB-C EarPods, although the EarPods thing isn't a huge deal since I mostly use AirPods.

What I'm really thinking about is future-proofing. I plan on keeping this dock for a long time and will likely upgrade to an M7 Pro MacBook in a few years, where I could actually take advantage of Thunderbolt 5 bandwidth for faster external SSDs, editing workflows, and potentially more demanding setups.

The Anker's power button and built-in HDMI are appealing, but the CalDigit seems to have a better reputation among Mac users and is fanless. Since they're only about $10 apart on Prime Day, which one would you buy and why?
