BPO Internal Documents

Quick question. A few years ago, JMS one or the writers on Sense8 mentioned sharing something, a BPO internal training manual or something. Has that ever been released?

Originally there was some cause he wanted people to support, fans donated but not enough so the file wasn’t released. However I read something about it maybe coming out later. Has that happened?

Theatre and Film Rehearsals and How to Improve?

I’ve been thinking about something. I’ve recently been listening to and reading a lot of interviews with theatre actors, where they talk about the rehearsal process.

They all seem to love the rehearsal process for theatre which lasts two months and allows them to explore their character. Meanwhile they all seem to hate film, where they basically get one read-through and a block-through before being rushed in-front of a camera.

I was just wondering if anyone has found a good way of running rehearsals for film and tv. I imagine there must be some middle ground since film actors don’t need to be off-book on the same way.

Herotech Sabre

Hi,

I’ve been really impressed by the herotech sabre. I know they aren’t planning on selling them, but have released their plans.

I was wondering if anyone was planning on making and selling these?

Synchroniser?

Hi,

I was reading an old book on Super8 filmmaking and reached a chapter on editors/viewers. All fairly normal stuff.

However, it talks about another piece of editing equipment called a synchroniser. I can’t find anything about this and the book doesn’t include a photograph of it.

Here is the description:
This is another editing device, consisting of a bank of sprockets which are mechanically locked to each other. It is an extremely useful tool for the amateur,
who almost invariably projects his camera-original film, rather than a print of it. Because of this, there is a constant risk of damaging the film at the editing stage through repeated handling and viewing. This is especially the case if the picture is being matched precisely to a complex sound track - where the visuals are cut to the beat of a piece of music, for instance. The professional strikes a cutting copy from the camera original. No matter what damage this copy suffers, the former is never at risk. Your alternative is to use a roll of white leader tape as a picture guide-roll. You can write on it, scratch it, punch holes in it or stick numbered labels on it.

I’m struggling to imagine what this is and what it does.

Prison Break and Audio Tape Proving Innocence

So, here’s a strange one. Can anyone help me find this movie I watched late one night in the 90s (it seemed to have been made in the 90s and was probably a TV movie).

The protagonist was a guy, I think his profession had something to do with electronics.

Anyway, a man and a woman frame him (I think the guy was his best friend, I can’t remember his connection to the woman).

The bit I can clearly remember was the end. He used his electronics skills to break out of prison. There was some sort of electronic motor which opened and closed his cell door and he had rigged something to that.

I don’t know how he got out of the prison itself, but he managed and ended up at the house of the man and woman. I think they received a call informing them that he had broken out and to be careful (but could be wrong on that detail). He then recorded them with a tape recorder.

The man was arrested, but he had a tape recording of the other two admitting they had framed him. All three of them end up in a police station and the detective plays the tape. The man and woman claim that it is obviously fake and edited together, but the detective just keeps rewinding it and playing it over and over (checking for edits?). The woman breaks down in tears, knowing she has been caught.

Modern Poly Knights of the Round Table

Hello,

This is a bit of a stretch and I’m not sure if this is allowed here, but does anyone know the title of this book?

I haven’t read the book myself, but it was recommended by a friend, she died a couple of years ago so asking her is sadly not an option.

She described the book as a modern polyamorous romance, but based on the knights of the round table. I think one of the characters (Lancelot?) was a former drug addict.

She described one scene where Morgana’s(?) parents weren’t accepting. I can’t remember exactly what it was they couldn’t accept, but I know it was unusual. I think they were absolutely fine with them being poly, but not the former addict thing, or they were fine with them being poly but not with one of them being bisexual. Whatever it was, I remember thinking it was an unusual place where they drew the line.

Old Filmmaking Book

This is a long shot, but I was wondering if anyone remembers an old filmmaking book. I read it years ago and found it interesting, I always meant to go back and finish it.

It talked about shooting a short film on actual film and hiring a church hall to build a set in.

There are two things I remember, the first was the short film was about a man in prison, he starts hallucinating and talking to himself, they used double exposure so the actor could play both sides of the scene.

The other thing was, the book advised using ‘sun guns’ for lighting. They mentioned sun guns a lot, to the point where I wondered if they were being paid by sun guns.

I read it in the 90s but I think it was older than that.

Drama Online / National Theatre rip tool

Hello,

I was just wondering, are there any tools which can save videos from dramaonline, coming from the national theatre?

I recently went to see a play and it was one of the best, most moving theatre experiences of my life. I need to have it!

If there was a blu ray or dvd, I would have already bought it. Unfortunately there isn’t. But I did find a different production on drama online.

Is there anyway I can save that video?

M1 Computer Concept Art

Hi,

I was just wondering if anyone can help me find something. I remember a few months ago, concept art from the first film was posted, showing Neo’s computer screens and a discussion he was having.

I’ve been searching for an hour but I just can’t find it again. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Shooting Ratios on Film Stock

I have an odd question. How did shooting ratios used to work when most shows were shot on film? As directors, how aware were you of camera reloads etc.

What would happen and were there any consequences to running over? Or was it accepted that the shooting ratio was flexible.

Lets say you were on an episode of Boston Legal. That show was famous for big Emmy winning monologues during the courtroom scenes. Hypothetically, what would happen if the episode was coming in on time, underbudget, but for the speech, you just burned through too many reels.

Would this cause problems and if so, how were they dealt with? Were people ever sweating it, hoping the Kodak delivery would arrive before you totally ran out of film? Or did the AC just go to the production next door and see if they borrow a reel or two.

I’m just trying to figure out how it was managed, since most of my experience is with digital.

Business Advice

I’m rewatching the series and just reached The Ins and Outs of Inns

It starts with Lorelei asking Luke for business advice, he walks her through the steps required to setup the Dragonfly. He talks about how his father had no business experience and he had to teach himself.

All that’s great… but, isn’t Lorelei attending college and studying business? Shouldn’t she know all this?

Magnolia Bath and Shower Cream

I was just wondering, are the Floral Magnolia bath products still available?

For the past year or so (since the cyberattack) this hasn’t shown up on the website, but is always available in store. I found one website that said it was discontinued, but despite that it seemed to always be in store.

Is it actually discontinued or is this just a website error?

If it is discontinued, are there any good alternative magnolia creams?

16mm Question

Hi,

I’m not a cinematographer, but I have a question and I was wondering if someone could answer.

How well does 16mm perform today?

So when I was younger, 16mm was a low end format, mainly used for documentaries, student films, and low budget tv (when TVs were much smaller).

Then I went to see Black Swan and found out later it was shot on 16mm (and hey Junebug, Squid and the Whale and Transamerica were 16mm around the same time). Now I’ll admit I don’t have as sharp an eye as most DoPs, but nothing about those films looked low budget or compromised.

Now, I know before 2000ish, films were duplicated the analogue way, losing quality with each generation. So for a third or fourth generation cinema print, 35mm was high enough quality to survive that and look fine, but 16mm looked rough by the end. However once we switched to scanning, lossless digital editing and DCPs, that stopped being a concern.

Again, I’m not a cinematographer, but is that a fair summary?

So in practical terms, what does that mean today? How would a film shot on 16mm today, compare to a 35mm film released in cinemas in the 1990s. Once digital workflows came in, is there a reason why more films didn’t start shooting on 16mm?

Sorry if this is a dumb question, I’m just curious.
