The possibility of a modern The Sopranos remake

I don’t think a modern version of The Sopranos should try to recreate the original. The original worked because it captured a very specific moment in America, post-Cold War optimism, rise of the internet, pre-social media masculinity, and the decline of old-school organized crime. A modern remake should ask a different question: what does organized crime look like when it merges with modern capitalism, tech culture, and online life?

This version of the “family” operates through online gambling, crypto laundering, influencer shell companies, nightlife branding, sports betting apps, offshore money movement, logistics, and real-estate pressure campaigns. Half the younger crew barely even identifies as mobsters anymore as they think they’re entrepreneurs. Tony’s central fear becomes that the world no longer rewards men like him, and instead of becoming obsolete because of the FBI, he’s becoming obsolete because algorithms, AI, venture capital, surveillance, international finance, and tech criminals are evolving faster than traditional organized crime.

The overall vibe would be way darker and colder than the original, basically The Sopranos meets Succession with the paranoia and grounded realism of The Americans. Muted colors, natural lighting, long silences, giant empty kitchens, black SUVs in freezing rain, glass offices at night, and conversations that feel emotionally suffocating. The violence would be rare but sudden and ugly and the line between organized crime and legitimate business would become almost impossible to distinguish.

Steven Strait as Tony Soprano. colder, leaner, more emotionally internalized. Less “street boss,” more exhausted crime-network executive trying to maintain control in a world that’s evolving past him.

Cristin Milioti as Carmela. sharper and more self-aware, fully aware of the business and how wealth and status justify it.

Ruby Cruz as Meadow. elite-college activist energy mixed with complete moral compartmentalization.

Iain Armitage as A.J.. spiritually hollowed out by internet-era life, doomscrolling, therapy language, anxiety, zero identity. My other option was the Rizzler.

Jeremy Allen White as Christopher. trying to become legitimate through startups, branding, nightlife, and media while realizing everything still traces back to violence.

Sydney Sweeney as Adriana. trapped inside influencer culture and nightlife branding while convincing herself she’s building something real.

Steve Carell as Silvio. the casting choice I’m weirdly most confident in. A calm, terrifying fixer/CFO type who understands surveillance, optics, PR, and corporate criminality better than Tony does.

Walton Goggins as Paulie

Dean Norris as Big Pussy

Jesse Plemons as Bobby

Michael Mando as Richie Aprile

Toby Kebbell as Ralph Cifaretto. psychologically disturbing in a deeply uncomfortable way.

Laura Linney as Dr. Melfi. increasingly conflicted over whether therapy is just helping Tony become a more functional predator.

Glen Powell as Furio would completely reinvented as an internationally connected criminal professional who makes the Jersey crew look outdated and provincial.

Meryl Streep as Livia Soprano. Pretty self explanatory.

David Strathairn as Junior Soprano

To the staff at the Library Freudian cafe: If you hate customer service, please just leave.

I work in customer service myself (movie theater), so I’m the first person to give grace for a rush or a "Karen" encounter. I get it. But every single time I go to this specific location, the vibes are beyond rancid. It’s a night and day difference compared to the Sierra Center or the Arbor. I ordered two drinks, a hot chai with oat milk and a Pink Drink. There were maybe three other people waiting. Zero rush.

Merry Jane, who took my order, looked physically pained and annoyed that she had to do her job. The barista (red hair) was unnecessarily rude when simply confirming the oat milk.

I don't expect performative cheerfulness, but the "how dare you buy coffee here" energy is wild. Everywhere else on campus, the staff is actually sweet, or at least professional.

TL;DR**:** There is something fundamentally wrong with the culture at this location. If you hate people this much, stop working front-facing jobs.
