Chinese Robot Makers Gather in Beijing to Make Robots Ready for Everyday Use

  • Over 300 companies are showing more than 2,000 robots and launching 150+ new models at the big Beijing robot conference.
  • One top company, Unitree, saw its shares jump almost 6 times on its first day of trading.
  • Worldwide shipments of human-like robots nearly quadrupled in the first half of 2026, and Chinese firms lead the market.
  • Most robots today only do simple jobs like moving boxes or sorting parcels, widespread use in factories and homes is still limited.
  • The boom looks a lot like China’s electric-car rush a few years ago: lots of competition now, but full everyday adoption may still take about 10 years.

National Guard Deployment in Washington, D.C.: Court Records Indicate Limited Mentions in Criminal Cases

In summer 2025, the U.S. administration under President Trump ordered National Guard troops into Washington, D.C. About 4,500 soldiers remain deployed.

A Reuters review of charging documents filed in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia over approximately one year found the troops mentioned in 1.3% of criminal prosecutions.

In some cases they stopped or assisted detentions, frequently involving minor offenses; in others they appear as witnesses or as subjects of reported incidents.

Court records associate their involvement more often with higher-income neighborhoods and areas near tourist sites or transit hubs than with neighborhoods accounting for the majority of recent murders.

Projected costs for continued presence through 2029 stand at $1.4 billion.

Patterns noted in the records:

  • Mentions more frequent in certain higher-income areas.
  • Fewer recorded interactions in neighborhoods linked to most murders.
  • Troops conduct primarily presence patrols under limited law-enforcement authority.

Sacked Ukrainian Defence Minister Challenges Zelenskyy with Call for Wartime Elections

Former Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov (35) posted a YouTube video on 18 August 2026 calling for a legal way to hold presidential elections despite martial law and the ongoing war.

Fedorov said: “Democracy cannot be held hostage by Russia” and that Ukraine is fighting “precisely because we want to remain a free European state.”

He pointed to a “systemic crisis of governance,” resistance to change, and corruption hurting the war effort.

He did not name Zelensky or declare his own candidacy.

Fedorov was dismissed in late July after only six months as defence minister (appointed January 2026). His firing sparked nationwide protests; army chief Oleksandr Syrskyi was later replaced under pressure.

Ukraine has been under martial law since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, elections are legally suspended.

This is widely seen as the strongest public political challenge to Zelensky’s wartime leadership by a major figure since 2022.

Reaction snapshot

Ukrainian officials, MPs and civil society figures have reacted with shock and concern over the timing while Russian attacks continue. Some who previously supported Fedorov still view wartime elections as risky or destabilising. Protests linked to his dismissal continued into August.

Trump orders major cut to US-South Korea military drills, calling them “hostile” to North Korea

Context in play right now:

  • South Korea’s president just proposed talks with the North to formally end the 73-year armistice and discuss nuclear issues.
  • North Korea continues deepening military support for Russia in Ukraine (troops, missiles, ammunition).
  • Trump cites cost, his relationship with Kim, and South Korea’s stance on Iran as reasons for scaling back the drills.

Possible dynamics worth watching:

  • Could the reduced drills lower the temperature on the peninsula and create more space for the South’s dialogue offer?
  • Might this shift North Korea’s calculus about how much attention and resources it directs outward versus inward?
  • Or do these tracks remain largely separate for now?

Open questions rather than conclusions. The sequence is public. The interactions, if any, are still unfolding.

Trump Administration Proposes Rescinding 2001 Roadless Rule Covering Nearly 59 Million Forest Acres

https://preview.redd.it/08ixly00i8kh1.png?width=1200&format=png&auto=webp&s=efaa2c8fab0213d915d44cbd9d76fdf14722c73b

  • The U.S. Forest Service has filed a proposal to rescind the 2001 Roadless Area Conservation Rule, which restricts logging, road construction, and mining on nearly 59 million acres (about 30% of the National Forest System).
  • Under the proposal, decision-making authority would shift from the national rule to local national forest managers.
  • Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins stated the change aims to restore local authority, improve forest health, and reduce wildfire risk.
  • The U.S. has seen approximately 7.3 million acres burned in about 49,000 wildfires through August 17, 2026, according to the National Interagency Fire Center.
  • Environmental groups, including the Wilderness Society, oppose the move, citing analysis that wildfire density is lowest in wilderness and protected forest areas and highest near roads; they argue additional roads and development could increase ignition risks.
  • Public comments on the proposal are open until September 21.

What are your thoughts on shifting management of these roadless areas to local forest managers, do you see potential benefits, drawbacks, or other factors that should be considered?

Middle-Income Countries See the U.S. as Interfering More Than China, Pew Finds

In its Spring 2026 Global Attitudes Survey of more than 42,000 adults across 36 countries, Pew Research Center found a clear pattern among the 17 middle-income nations surveyed: people raise more concerns about U.S. foreign policy than China’s.

A median of 75% say the United States interferes in the affairs of other countries “a great deal” or “a fair amount,” compared with 45% who say the same about China. In nearly every one of those countries, more respondents view the U.S. as the bigger interferer.

The same survey shows China rated more favorably on related measures:

  • A median of 69% see China as a reliable partner, versus 49% for the U.S.
  • 58% say China contributes to peace and stability around the world, compared with 40% for the U.S.
  • 57% believe China takes the interests of countries like theirs into account when making international policy decisions, versus 42% for the United States.

The 17 middle-income countries include Argentina, Bangladesh, Brazil, Colombia, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Peru, the Philippines, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Turkey. These findings form part of a broader shift in which China is now viewed more positively than the U.S. in most of the 36 countries surveyed overall.

Global Bond Selloff: US 30-Year Yields Highest Since 2007, Japan 10-Year at 3-Decade Peak

Long-term borrowing costs surge from the US to Japan and Europe as inflation fears and fiscal pressures intensify.

Key highlights:

- US 30-year Treasury yields top 5% (highest since 2007); oil above $90/barrel (up 50% this year) and fading US-Iran peace hopes fuel inflation worries.

- Japan’s 10-year yields near 3% (3-decade high) amid rate-hike expectations as early as September.

- German, French, and UK long-term yields also at multi-year/decade highs.

- High government debt (US, Japan, France, UK), AI data-center capital demand, rising deficits, and weaker foreign demand for Treasuries (Japan, UK, China holdings fell in June) drive the selling.

Experts: Markets entering an era of greater inflation/rate uncertainty and upside risks (Kjersti Haugland, DNB Carnegie); 5% US 10-year level critical for confidence (Guy Miller, Zurich); Japanese yields now more competitive, reducing automatic foreign absorption of US supply (Charu Chanana, Saxo Bank).

Rising yields raise costs for companies, mortgages, and growth—potentially tightening conditions just as stocks hit records.

JPMorgan: Fertilizer disruptions + strong El Niño risk pushing global food inflation to ~5% in H1 2027

JPMorgan’s Nora Szentivanyi (report: “Food Security Is National Security: A Compounding Storm”) projects global food inflation rising from 2.8% in H1 2026 to around 5% in H1 2027.

Main drivers:

  • Middle East fertilizer supply (urea/ammonia) hit by Strait of Hormuz disruptions
  • High probability of a “super” El Niño lasting into 2027

This raises farm input costs and potential yield pressure, especially in emerging markets. Not a guaranteed famine, but a credible risk of elevated food prices.

Trump Posts on Truth Social Citing India’s Election System to Push U.S. Voter ID Law

On August 17, 2026, Donald Trump posted on Truth Social that India’s Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar had asked the U.S. administration how elections could be held without photo ID.

He noted India’s 2024 election saw about 646 million voters, under 1% by mail, and every voter required valid photo identification, then called for passage of the SAVE America Act.

The post itself is confirmed by archives and multiple news reports. India’s election numbers and photo-ID rules align with Election Commission data. The specific exchange with Kumar has been reported only through Trump’s statement so far.

Does this comparison change how you view election rules in either country?

Trump’s approval hits 33% – lowest of his presidency

A new Reuters/Ipsos poll finds just 33% of Americans approve of President Trump’s job performance (down from 35% earlier this month), while 64% disapprove.

The drop comes after U.S. strikes on Iran that disrupted global oil flows and pushed gas prices higher.

80% of respondents, including majorities of both parties, now expect the conflict to last an extended period, and only about one in five say the war has been worth it.

What stands out to you from these numbers?

US Ultimatum: Allies Must Choose Sides in the AI Race. Join Us or Lose Access as China Surges

The US is drawing a hard line in the AI race: partners must pick sides or risk exclusion from its coalition.

A draft letter warns dozens of countries (including those in the Pax Silica initiative) against joining China’s rival AI framework, aiming to cut Beijing off from critical minerals, chips, and tech collaboration.

Kazakhstan is already in both camps, raising alarms in Washington. Chinese open-weight models are gaining fast.

The tech cold war just got hotter.

Trump Hails Mecca Defence Pact as “Big, Bold, and Important First Step”

Some context:

  • Comes amid ongoing US-Iran tensions and questions over long-term reliability of external security guarantees.
  • Combines Türkiye’s large conventional forces (NATO member), Saudi financial & energy weight, and Pakistan’s nuclear status.
  • Official statements from all three sides describe it as purely defensive and open to other countries.

Possible readings:
It can be seen as greater regional burden-sharing, a hedge against uncertainty, or a step toward more self-reliant security architecture in the Middle East. Different actors may view it as serving stability, deterrence, or shifting influence, depending on their interests.

What do you make of Trump’s strong endorsement? Does it signal approval of regional self-reliance, or something else?
