How is My Engine Valves?

Recently bought a 2013 Honda Pilot (J35Z4 engine - 3.5-liter, 24-valve, SOHC i-VTEC aluminum-alloy V6 engine) with very low mileage. Had a photo taken with the valve cover off to do a valve cover inspection. For those of you knowledgeable with cars, how do you find my engine valves? Does it look good? Anything to watch out for?

Why is the bottom side reddish-brown vs the top side? And any idea what that strip of lime green in the middle is?

Ideas for Installing Rear dash cam on Honda Pilot 2nd Gen

Hi all, for those that have installed rear dashcams on your 2nd gen Pilot. Where or how did you mount the rear dashcam to the back? This 2nd gen pilot has a rear window that can move independently from the liftgate/hatch so one cannot just mount a rear dash cam in the typical place with the liftgate fully opened and then mount the cam up against the window.

I think one has to mount the rear dashcam with the rear window opened (see photo attached). But how can I mount the rear cam effectively? The plastic trim piece that opens up right behind the weather stripping has some plastic inserts in it that prevent me from clipping something into the plastic trim. Just looking to crowd source some thoughts/ideas

Shipped Car by Rail and see this spot. How to remove?

Recently shipped a SUV by rail from Alberta to Ontario. When I received the vehicle I noticed this mark. Is this a rust mark? I've put a close up photo and a normal photo, its not a huge mark in the grand scheme of things but its annoying that I want it gone.

Is there a way to remove this without causing damage to the paint? I thought about trying to scrap it off with a tool but thought to hold back because I didnt know if it would damage the surface. I tried to scrap lightly with my fingernail but it looks embedded in somehow. Would love to get some reactions from this community. Thank you!

Advice on Service Repair Optimization for Honda Pilot 2nd Gen

I'm based in Toronto Canada. Recently bought a 2013 Honda Pilot with around 89,000 KM. Yes it's a baby, barely driven. Very few things were changed on the car besides just some oil changes. Some service work is due for the car to run optimally, especially timing belt and related components. Honda's guidance is 166,000KM OR 7 years. We're well past the time requirement on the timing belt.

Since the labour will be expensive, I was wanting to bundle replacing several other items as part of the "while you are there, change anyway" category

  1. Replacement of Timing belt itself and of the related components below:
  • Timing belt tensioner
  • Tensioner adjuster pulley
  • Idler pulley
  1. Replacement of Water Pump and coolant fluid replacement
  2. Replacement of Serpentine/drive belt and related components

  • Serpentine belt tensioner
  1. Replacement of engine cam and engine crank seals

Am I missing anything above in terms of parts that should be changed since the mechanic is in the timing belt area anyways? Or did I cover everything?

In addition to the above, the Honda maintenance schedule also has maintenance minder sub item 4 which includes a few other items to do:

  1. Replacement of spark plugs
  2. Valve Clearance Adjustment (It actually says inspection - but how can you inspect without opening the valve cover itself? At that point doesnt it make sense to just do the adjustment?)

What is the best thing to do from a cost savings/optimization perspective? The car right now is not exhibiting any symptoms or issues whatsoever. However, I want to do proactive maintenance and since I know the timing belt should be changed, I figured I should also change the related components within the timing belt area so I dont have to think about this for maybe 6-7 years.

So I was wondering your expert opinion on the following:

  1. To save on costs 'down the road' should I just try to bundle all these services altogether to save on labour costs in the future? I can try to leverage the big labour costs of the timing belt to get the related other components replaced as well. Or ;
  2. Should I split the job into 2 parts and do all the side of the engine work (timing belt, serpentine belt, pulleys, etc) in one job and the other job related to the top of the engine (spark plugs, valve clearance adjustment) in a separate job?
  3. Some of the dealerships I've spoken to have said you shouldn't change the pulleys, drive belt tensioner or engine cam and crank seals if it isn't needed. But what if there are issues in the future, wouldn't I face a big labour bill because getting access to these components is going to be a big issue anyways? So wouldn't it make sense to do proactive replacement now?
  4. I'm trying to see if I can get all this work done for $2000 or so. Is that a good price?

Need Help in Deciding on Pre Purchase Inspection from Grease Monkey.

Hi all. I'm considering performing a pre purchase inspection (PPI) on a used vehicle from a Honda Pilot 2011. There's a number of companies I see that provide these services like Grease Monkey, CarInspect, and INeedAPPI.

What I have really liked about CarInspect and INeedAPPI is that both provide a sample report of what an inspection could look like.

Grease Monkey has not provided a sample inspection report. I was wondering if any of you in this community have used Grease Monkey's services to do a PPI and if you'd be comfortable sharing the details of the comprehensive report so I could see what level of detail Grease Monkey provides when inspecting the vehicle? You can obviously crop any identifying info if there is any. Just want to understand how thorough their inspection is. And when I asked the company they aid they do not provide any sample reports.

Need Help Diagnosing if this Rust on Pilot is OK?

Im looking to buy a 2011 Honda Pilot in Ontario with 113,000miles/182,000KM.

The seller sent the following photos of the underside. First photo looks like the rear and second one is the front side of the bottom.

Is the rust that is shown ok given the age of the vehicle and the KM ? Also if you check the second photo there is some oil stain it looks like on the metal pieces - is that fine? What is the metal pieces where the oil stains are? He says it doesnt drip oil when it's parked.

Really look forward to your quick views!!
