The Wanggongchang Armory was located about 3km southwest of the Forbidden City and was one of Beijing’s major gunpowder factories. The explosion at the factory destroyed nearly everything within an area of two square kilometres and the estimated death toll was about 20,000. Many prominent officials and even the crown prince were killed in the explosion. The Ming were already facing numerous crises at this point, but this incident led many to lose faith in the Tianqi Emperor, and he was forced to pay an enormous sum for rebuilding efforts. Tianqi died the next year, and since his only son died in the explosion he was replaced by his younger brother, who became the Chongzhen Emperor. Chongzhen made a lot of dipshit decisions, like purging very competent officials because he didn’t like them. His poor leadership would seal the Ming Dynasty’s fate and he was overthrown by the Qing 18 years into his reign.
