Open-air cinema season is in full swing in Berlin

Peak open-air cinema right now. Freiluftkino Kreuzberg (in the Kunstquartier Bethanien courtyard) and Friedrichshain (in Volkspark Friedrichshain) both run nightly cult classics and English-language films under the stars. Films usually start at dusk (~21:30). Bring a blanket – it cools down by the trees.

Germany are OUT, knocked out by Paraguay on penalties last night

Well. That was rough. Germany lost a World Cup penalty shootout for the first time ever, going down to Paraguay 1-1 (3-4 on pens) in the Round of 32. Four-time champions, out in the last 32.

Havertz cancelled out Enciso's first-half header, then a Jonathan Tah header was controversially ruled out by VAR in extra time, and then the shootout happened. Havertz, Woltemade and Tah all missed. Brutal.

Reminder: German-English language exchange every Tuesday

For anyone in Berlin trying to meet people and practise German, there's a weekly language exchange every Tuesday, 19:00, at Travolta Bar in Kreuzberg (Wiener Str. 14b, U1 Görlitzer Bahnhof). Separate tables for English and German, all levels, no sign-up needed.

One of the easier ways to meet people here that isn't a club or an app

A lot of free stuff in Berlin this weekend

Decent weekend if you're around in Berlin:

Kreuzberg Festival:
Final day today, 12:00–20:00 at Viktoriapark. Three stages of open-air music, 100+ stalls, and street food. Free.

Tag der Architektur:
80+ recently finished buildings and architecture offices open their doors to the public. Rare chance to see inside places normally closed. Free.

Also: Restaurant Week and the Schloss Bellevue open days both end today if either's on your list.

What's everyone doing?

Germany's World Cup Round of 32 is tomorrow (Mon) at 22:30 vs Paraguay – where's everyone watching?

Germany topped Group E despite the Ecuador loss, so they're into the knockouts. First match: Monday 29 June, 22:30 vs Paraguay.

One heads-up—Olympiastadion isn't showing it (Bruno Mars is on Sunday and Monday).

The usual best spots are the beer gardens and indoor bar screens around Friedrichshain (Revaler Str.), Neukölln and Kreuzberg. It's a late kickoff and still warm, so an indoor or shaded screen probably beats a packed terrace.

Where's everyone planning to watch? Drop your go-to spots.
