I'm Japanese. On English-speaking social media there're so many exaggerated posts about Japan's working culture that are decades out of date. Like, working 12 hours a day or forced drinking party was common decades ago, and there's still some company like that, but it's definitely not how average Japanese people work in 2026.

And I often see people bring this up when talking about Korea too, and wonder how accurate it is. Is this exaggerated just like Japan's?

Apparently so many people on English-speaking social media can't view Japan as a normal country. It's either heaven or hellhole.

And what frustrates me the most is that, almost always these statements are made based on either decades outdated or just completely made up bullshit about Japan.

No, working 12 hours a day isn't how average Japanese people work in 2026. And no, some niche gadget you can find in Japan doesn't mean Japan is living in 2050.

Please just view Japan as a normal country. Japan isn't some alien planet where up is down or everything is mysterious. 99% of "Weird Japan", "crazy Japan" facts you see on social media is false.

Below is some pieces of misinformation about Japan I saw online

•Video showing some niche gadget no one in Japan uses as a proof of "Japan is living in 2050"

•"Japanese women are obedient"（disgusting）

•"conviction rate of 99% thing"（It's technically true but used in highly misleading way. It's NOT that 99% of those arrested are found guilty. Japan’s conviction rate is high simply because prosecutors generally don’t bring charges unless there is sufficient evidence）

•"You can't talk while riding the train"（I talked with friends on train all the time when I was in highschool lol）

•"Japan's age of consent is 13" (By national law yes it's 13, but EVERY prefecture has juvenile protection ordinances（淫行条例）that effectively prohibites adults from engaging in sexual activity with minor under 18. In practice, Japan's age of 18. Adult men can't have sexual relationship with minor)

•Bizarrely biased reporting about Japan’s suicide rate and birth rate（When Japan is the topic always these are brought up, but people don't do the same with countries like Belgium despite having higher suicide rate than Japan, or Italy despite having lower birthrate）

•Most of "honor" or "shame" thing as if we act based on it like a warrior in middle age. Peak orientalism moment

•Decades outdated stereotype of working culture（There are still company like that but it's not THAT BAD. And some of the "noam" regarding working culture is completely made up（like "sleeping while working is praised in Japan because it shows dedication）

•"Japan has extraordinarily high underreporting rate of sexual crimes"（Depends on survey but it's not different from countries in the west in general）

•"Used panty vending machines are everywhere in
Japan"（WTF???????）

•Bunch of weird "noams" in Japan that's only true for like 0.0000000001% of Japanese people（"renting a girlfriend", "marring to anime girl"etc）

I’m Japanese. Few young people in Japan seem interested in moving abroad, but from what I’ve seen, Koreans seem much more open to the idea. I’m curious about how big the difference is between Japan and South Korea

4. What is the best location to build nodes? I usually see them built either at right next to HQ or on the line where first sector and second sector meets, and what's the advantage of these location regarding building nodes?

The discussion about women’s safety in Japan on social media seems to be split between two extremes. Some people say Japan is one of the safest countries in the world, where women can walk alone at night without worrying. Others claim it’s a complete hellhole for women, where sexual crimes happen on a daily basis. For me it feels both are wrong and exaggerating the reality. This is a common phrase used to describe what Japan is like on social media. However, from my experience so far, of course Japan is far from perfect but it's also far from terrible. What's your opinion on it?
