How to stop hurting self during meltdown?

TW: self harm, kind of

Whenever I have a meltdown, which has been nearly daily lately due to stress, I slap, punch, or scratch myself. It always leaves me with red marks and scratches, I even have permanent scars from this.

I know I need to stop, but I don’t know how. Most advice tells you to direct the anger at something else, e.g. a pillow, but that doesn’t work for me because it’s the physical pain that I’m seeking out. The pain is what calms me down. So what do I do? I can’t keep hurting myself like this because it’s embarrassing to leave the house when I’m full of scratches. But nothing else works. The pain is the only thing stopping me from feeling like my head is about to explode.

How to stop rolling fingers

Hi, I’ve been playing the flute for 1,5 years now with bi weekly lessons and I’d say I’m intermediate. However I have a bad habit of rolling my fingers that I can’t get rid of. For example when jumping from e to f sharp, I lift my index finger first and then my middle finger. I used to play the piano before this and I always rolled my chords and octaves because of small hands, so I assume it’s because of that. Does anyone have any tips maybe? I really struggle with lifting my fingers at the exact same time.

Ben er gewoon even helemaal klaar mee.

I’m a bum and I can’t take therapists seriously because they’re educated and successful

Logically, I know that a therapist should be educated in order to be decent at their job. But I just can’t take them seriously because of it, because we’re exact opposites. They’ve got a good and meaningful job, I’ve got a minimum wage job. They’re educated, I’m on the verge of failing uni. They’re successful in life, I’m a bum.

You can’t tell me that having an education is not important when your bachelor and master degrees prove otherwise, you can’t tell me money doesn’t matter when you didn’t settle for a minimum wage job, etc. How am I supposed to take any of their advice to heart like that? All I can think during therapy is “easy for you to say that, you’ve got it made”.

Has anyone else just kinda always known? I feel like I’m stuck in a self fulfilling prophecy

I’ve always known that a relationship was never going to be in the cards for me. From age 10 onwards. This belief was so deeply rooted that during my teens I had 0 interest in boys because I knew that it was going to be one-sided anyways. It all felt pointless. I never really developed a want or need for a relationship because I never considered it a real possibility. Me being alone was just a fact of life.

Now I’m 23 and I’m still the same. I feel abnormal. And no I’m not asexual or aromantic. But I just don’t try at all because the idea of me being in a relationship feels wrong and fills me with disgust.
It goes against the beliefs I’ve held all my life. And if I were to try, and it would go horribly wrong, then it would just confirm those beliefs that I’m fundamentally unlovable, rather than it being due to a lack of trying. So I’m staying here, in my comfortable bubble where I can’t get hurt because I don’t try and where I can’t feel disappointed because this is all I’ve ever known.

Being forced to do more work than the other kids felt like a punishment for being smart

Back in elementary school we had a program for smart, or “gifted” kids. Except it wasn’t really a program, we just got a binder with extra assignments that we had to finish on top of our regular work. Oh and I was also the only kid in my class who had to participate in this. It was mandatory. Something about not being challenged enough and wasted potential or whatever.

I hated it. I wasn’t allowed to work on the assigments during class. They forced me to sit in an empty classroom or in the hallway. And there was a lot of pressure to finish the assignments too. I had to show my work to the school principal at the end of the week. That shit is intimidating as an 11 year old.

I didn’t mind the work being more challenging. I liked that. What I hated was that I had to do MORE work. It was on top of the regular curricilum and it didn’t feel fair that I was being saddled with a bigger workload than the other kids, including more homework. I honestly felt like I was being punished for being smart.

Sometimes it’s like people forget that smart kids are still kids at the end of the day.

How do you maintain friendships when there’s no proximity anymore?

23F. I’ve noticed that I struggle to keep friends when there’s no activity or obligation keeping us together. I could easily hit it off with someone during class and become friends, but the second that class ends the friendship starts dying. Same goes for any other activity. I try to suggest a hangout or something to keep in touch, but it never really works. We hang out a few times, if that, and then the contact just dwindles until I never hear from them again.

I’m really puzzled on how other people manage this. I know that it’s somewhat normal to lose friends as you become older, but honestly this really sucks! I’ve basically lost all my friends from my home town and from university and I don’t know what to do now.

*hormonal birth control, oops

So my anxiety has gotten far far worse since June/July 2025, and I started birth control in August of 2025. I went on birth control to deal with horrible periods and it’s been a blessing so far, but I’m suspecting it might also be making my anxiety worse.

At first I assumed that my worsening anxiety wasn’t a symptom of the birth control because it already was progressing before I went on it, but now I’m not so sure. I’m on Yasmin btw. Also I’m not taking any other meds at the moment.

Do any women here have experience with quitting birth control, and did it have any (positive) effects on your anxiety?

At least when I was depressed, it was just nothingness. Now it’s constant dread, sweating, nausea, exhaustion, and a heartrate that feels like it’s trying to kill me.

Depression made me not want to function but now with this anxiety I can’t even function anymore. I’ve been reduced to nothing but cortisol wrapped in human skin.
