Where to start if you want to make a plushie?

I had no idea this sub existed! So long story short, I want to start learning how to make my own plushies, because I love stuffed animals but my country just doesn't have a big market for it so I have to buy online, where the cost translated into my currency + shipping is something I can't justify spending on a plushie.

I'm specifically thinking about making dinosaurs. They're a special interest of mine and I've wanted a feathered raptor plushie since forever, which is juust a little too niche for there to be any sewing tutorials readily available for it.

So where should I start? Any YouTube channels I should look into? What would be the best materials to use? My grandma and mom are both well-versed in sewing and have sewing machines available, and they would be happy to teach me how to use them, so I got that part covered!

So I don't feel anxious about driving alone 🩷

This is Unnamed Pig. I got them while on a trip to New York City for my 15th birthday (a big deal where I'm from), so that was almost a decade ago now. My parents weren't thrilled about it since we didn't know how we would bring Unnamed Pig home on the plane back to Brazil, but iirc they counted as a carry-on so I got to snuggle on the flight back.

Unnamed Pig is absolutely great for cuddling at night, and they had a VIP spot on my bed for many years. But after I got my cat 5 years ago I ended up having to hide all my stuffed animals in the wardrobe because he has a high prey drive and unfortunately plays too rough with the plushies :(

I miss having my plushies around, but I hadn't thought about it much until today a light bulb appeared above my head: I don't like driving by myself, it makes me nervous, even though I did it during college and now everyday for work. Unnamed Pig is my biggest plushie so they're not exactly suitable for outings on foot...but why let them waste away in my wardrobe when they could be keeping me company elsewhere?

So yeah, I have a giant pig riding shotgun now. I do give rides to other people sometimes but I can just move them (the pig, not the person) into the backseat for a little bit.

I felt weird giving Unnamed Pig a name back then since they're just the pig from Moana, which is named Pua, but I also don't like using the 'canon' name. So I need ideas!

It feels relevant to mention that my car has a name. I call it "Wolf Girl Summer"

Where might one look for sewing patterns?

I'll keep it vague bc of the rules but I'm looking for a sewing pattern that is behind a paywall. I have found a few resources to download files from this specific site, but they all say you need to already be subscribed to the paywalled site to download the files you want which makes them pretty redundant in this case.

I'm no stranger to piracy, it's just that I'm usually going for movies or games, never had to look for a sewing pattern before. I tried finding groups on Telegram since it's helped me with 3D printer files in the past but couldn't find any for sewing

Dinosaur plushie that ships to my country and isn't insanely expensive?

This is my first time posting here so apologies for any mistakes. I've always adored stuffed animals, I have kept a lot of my childhood plushies and they bring me a lot of comfort. I'm also autistic, and I LOVE dinosaurs (very original of me, I know).

My favorite dinos are Dromaeosaurids, AKA raptors. Utahraptor is my beloved but I love all of them rly, Velociraptors, Microraptors, Deinonychus, you name it.

So a few months ago I got it in my head that I wanted a raptor stuffed animal. The only requirements I had was that it was a feathered one, not the ugly naked Jurassic Park raptors.

I'm from Brazil, and we don't rly have a plushie market, so I looked abroad. I even asked in a couple dinosaur-related subreddits, but no luck. Most of the places I found don't ship to my country, and also there's just...no factory made accurate dinosaur stuffed animals I guess?? They all seem to be handmade which, hey, I 100% support, but the currency is the issue - Brazilian Reais, the local currency, is absurdly devalued. So the fact that these plushies would already be expensive to the average person paying in dollars or euros is made like 5x worse for me.

I saw a really awesome Microraptor plushie in this sub today, and I looked up their site with no expectations...only to find that they do ship worldwide. That's already half the issue solved! Buuut then there's the cost. I've attached some images of what I mean.

It would cost me aprox 750 Brazilian reais to buy this plushie. That is over half my monthly paycheck. I could save up for it, I think, if they don't get sold out. But the logical part of my brain just can't justify spending this much on a stuffed animal, even though I REALLY want it.

So, before I commit and end up getting too invested in this particular plushie, I thought I'd ask here! If you have any recommendations at all of places where I could find a feathered raptor plush, and they ship to Brazil, let me know!!

What the hell do I even say? I feel like I just had a religious experience.

I'm thrilled, I'm depressed, I'm pondering, I'm yearning. I'm hungry for something that I can't name. I'm missing something I've never known.

I went into this book mostly blind. I only knew the most basic synopsis, and that it was vaguely inspired by Carmilla. I love Carmilla and all its variations, so that was enough for me. I was expecting a good, but typical, story about repressed desires. But this book is so much more than that.

I'll keep this as spoiler-free as possible, but I can say this: if you pick up this book looking for a love story, you're going to be disappointed. Hungerstone isn't about love, it's about desire. It's about the horror of being a woman. It's about going through your whole life suppressing everything that makes you a person, an oppression so strong that by the time you realize what's happening, you've been nothing but a walking corpse your entire life.

I've related to plenty of characters in media during my life. But I think this might be the first time I've understood a character so profoundly, even though Lenore's life is absolutely nothing like my own. In fact, were we to meet, I don't think I would like her very much at all. And yet I feel seen, somehow? It's like this book has unlocked something in me that I always knew existed but never had the words to verbalize.

I can't help but be reminded of the lyrics in Abbey, by Mitski, a song I've always identified with though I couldn't understand exactly why. "I am hungry. I have been hungry. I was born hungry. What do I need?"

Sorry, I know this post hasn't been much about Hungerstone at all, but I don't think I can even find the words to review it properly. Anything I say will pale in comparison to the experience of reading this book. I just can't recommend it enough.

Hello all! I just finished my yearly reading of Carmilla last night, and I've been thinking about how I'd tear out my own liver to have a big-budget, faithful adaptation of the book made.

I realized I don't actually have ideas for what my ideal cast or even crew would be like, except for the fact I'd want Diablo Cody to write it. I mean, can you imagine?? The absolute genius who gave us Jennifer's Body and Lisa Frankenstein (two very queer-coded movies)??? I would die a happy woman, I really would.

But alas, I'm terrible with names, and I really don't know a lot of directors at all, or even actresses that would be young enough to play the main roles.

I think Robert Eggers totally nailed the gothic atmosphere in his Nosferatu adaptation, and sure, Guillermo del Toro could probably do something really special with the visuals too, but honestly? This would absolutely rule with a female director as well as a writer. Can you even comprehend the things someone like Coralie Fargeat or Karyn Kusama could do with the imagery in Carmilla?!

So I guess my main questions would be about the cast after all. Like I said, I would want them to look young enough to play an 18/20 year old, and that rules out most of the actresses I do know and love. So like, I think Camila Mendes would look great as Carmilla for example, but she's 31 and besides, I think it would be really cool to cast unknown or upcoming young actresses in something like this!

No reason for the other roles to not be filled by beloved actors though, like the governesses and Laura's father, Carmilla's mother, etc. This could have some really cool cameos even. Like, get Natasha Lyonne and Uma Thurman to play Madame Perrodon and Mademoiselle De Lafontaine or something, that would be so fun!

I'm really curious to see what you all think 👀
