🎶 When you wake up in the morning, it’s a quarter to one… 🎶

🎶 … and you want to have a little fun
You brush your teeth 🎶

What. The. Fuck. Raffi.

When you wake up at 1 am, you go back to sleep, because it is 1 am

This song has me convinced that Raffi secretly hates parents.

Sewing classes? Has anyone taken them?

Has anyone taken any of the sewing classes offered in the area? Googling pulls up a couple, but I can’t find any reviews.

I have no experience with sewing, and I don’t do well with self guided learning. So I’m looking for a beginner class that will teach me some basic hand stitches, how to use a sewing machine, and how to hem and do other very basic alterations.

Does anyone have any experience with classes like this?

What are you guys doing on weekends?

It's another weekend, I don't want to waste it sitting around the house again.....but I'm not really sure what to do?

The summers where I live are ungodly hot, and for some reason every single event that's happening in our town takes place outdoors. Which sounds miserable.

We've visited all the museums a million times.

We could take our kid along to activities the parents want to do.....but what even is it that I want to do???? Even the adult activities take place outside, and it's so hot.

What do you guys do on weekends to unwind and have fun?

When and how did they gain the ability to make jokes?????

Without me noticing, my toddler has gained the ability to make jokes. I’m so flabbergasted, I swear she was a baby yesterday.

Here’s an example.

Playfully, I ask “Where is [Baby’s name]?” Baby gestures I don’t know, and looks around pretending to be confused while smiling mischievously.

I ask, “are you [Baby’s name]?” Baby giggles and shakes head no.

I ask, “are you [Baby’s nickname]?”

Again, Baby giggles and shakes head no

I ask, “Are you baby?”

Again, Baby giggles and shakes head no

I pause, and then slowly ask, “Are you [Dog’s name]?”

Cue baby squealing with laughter as she nods yes and starts barking and pretending to eat food like a dog.

I am floored, when did she learn what a joke was? When did she gain the ability to construct one? How did she learn what all these words mean?

If I was dropped into a foreign country where I knew nothing about the language and customs, I don’t think I could pick up her level of language proficiency in the same amount of time.

Thoughts on flavored yogurt cups?

My 18 month old had those favored, snack sized yogurt cups at my parents’ house.

She loved them. She’s currently refusing milk, so I was happy they found an alternative dairy that she would eat.

But it has added sugar and coloring. I tried to recreate it myself by using unflavored yogurt, mashing up fruit and adding a tiny bit of honey. But she doesn’t like it as much.

Thoughts? Should I just let her have the premade snack cups?

Is this a realistic budget for renting in seattle?

Partner and I are moving to Seattle with a toddler and small dog. My parents will be staying with us for an extended period, and I’m pregnant. We’re hoping to rent a home or townhome.

Budget: ~$6000
Bedrooms: 4 with a separate space for home office
Bathrooms: 2
Wants: some sort of outdoor space, walking distance to a small park, library or playground. Air conditioning

Is this realistic? Or are we out of luck?

Right now on redfin, it feels like most of my options disappear once I select air conditioning

Edit: working in downtown Kirkland, trying to stay below a 35 minute commute

Toddlers make no sense to me, do they bend the laws of the universe to their will?

Ever since my kid hit 14 months, she has turned into such a picky eater.

Her diet is at least 70% fruit, and the rest is white rice. I have been so stressed about her nutrition and calorie intake. I am worried about her vitamin d and iron levels.

So imagine my shock, when at our 18 month appointment the pediatrician happily announces that she’s 85% for weight and 75% for height.

WITH WHAT CALORIES???? This kid eats almost nothing! Has she gained the ability to photosynthesize??????? I asked the pediatrician to double check the numbers, because surely, there’s been a mistake. She laughed as if I made a joke, but I was serious. 😭😭😭😭

Venue ideas for a going away party?

Hi DCBitches! My family is moving away from DC after a decade here. Despite living in the area for so long, I’m drawing a complete blank on where we could host a-get-together to say goodbye to our friends.

- Guests will be in mid 30s-early 50s
- Multiple guests will have children under 10 yrs of age
- Would like to have alcohol of some sorts
- Would like to have food of some sorts
- We have friends coming from VA and DC, so would be nice if parking was accessible

Does anyone have thoughts? Are there any breweries in Arlington or DC that are more kid-friendly and not too crowded?

I picked up these rings from a thrift shop, do they look like they could be opals?

I picked up these rings from a thrift shop, hoping that the stones were opals. But I’m not an expert.

Could anyone confirm if these are opals, and if so are they synthetic?

If they are opals, is there a safe way for me to clean the tarnish and dirt of the silver parts at home? Would it be possible for me to reset the stones into another piece?

Are there any actual good bowling places left?

Or are they all owned by PE now and cost $$$$?

Growing up, bowling was one of the few ways my family could bond without any drama. My mom keeps asking to go again, but all the places are so expensive!!

Has anyone figured out how to get work done while their toddler is around? Follow up question, has anyone found a way to relax with their toddler around?

If so, what are the strategies you guys use?

I want to be able to work on my laptop, or relax and read a book, while my toddler is in the same room as me. Is this an achievable goal, or am I asking for something that’s not possible?

Right now, toddler gets interested in whatever I’m doing, or asks for me to engage with them. Saying no leads to a tantrum. If we keep practicing this, will toddler eventually learn that sometimes parents aren’t available and they need to entertain themselves? Or is this something that comes with age and can’t be taught?

Just realized I will have to wake up early for school and be stuck to a school schedule until they graduate 😩

I guess I knew this, in the back of mind, but in an unaware sort of way. But it really hit me this morning.

I hated school growing up. I hated how rushed the mornings were, I hated waking up early, I hated how scheduled my days were, and I hated having to travel when everyone else was traveling.

This morning I was laying in bed thinking of how much I enjoy adult life because I don’t have to deal with any of the above. Then, I had the sudden realization this was going to end as soon as they started school.

To be clear, I love my kid and I know I signed up for this. But I just need to mourn the death of this freedom for a bit this morning.

ETA:
The amount of homeschooling recommendations are throwing me. I have to work to support my family, I can’t homeschool. Nor would I want to even if I could. I know myself, I’d be a terrible teacher

Has anyone found an effective way to reduce the indian cooking smell?

My mother is an AMAZING chef, her food is delicious, and it's how she shows love. However, the smell is very strong, it gets into absolutely everything in their home, and if I spend any time in their home all our belongings are saturated with the scent for weeks.

She'll be coming to stay with us, and we live in a smaller home with an open floor plan. I know she'll want to cook. If I push back and say my husband and I will do the cooking, her feelings get hurt. When my husband and I cook, we make sure to cover the pots/pants while we're cooking to reduce the smell. We also keep the heat lower to avoid oil spray. My mother is unwilling to do this, she says it will affect the final result.

We don't use any artificial scents in the home due to my husband's asthma.

Here's what we've done in the past when she's come to stay with us:

  • We have some baking soda and activated charcoal by the stove
  • Open windows and run the fan for cross ventilation
  • Close all the doors
  • Have air filters running in every room on high
  • Turn on the hood vent that vents to the outside
  • I just bought a splatter guard to help reduce the aerosolized oil, not sure if it'll do anything though

But none of this seems to do anything. I know there will be at least one comment that'll say "just embrace the delicious smell," but please don't. The smell is not delicious when it lingers on the clothes/furniture. It also makes a home harder to sell as the smell is hard to get out. I'm very appreciative of my Mom's offer to cook, and don't want to hurt her feelings! But I'd also like a way to reduce the smell if possible. Thanks in advance!!

I was borderline feral under the age of five

I moved from India to America when I was five, so all of the memories I have of India are absolutely insane within my current context of being a toddler Mom.

I used to run around with a pack of neighborhood kids in a city called Hyderabad, completely unsupervised. We left the apartment and would play in the streets where there were cars, cows, and street dogs walking around. I look around me at the five year olds in my life, and I can’t imagine letting them run around the streets of my (objectively) much safer American city with zero supervision.

I have an extremely distinct memory of finding a pile mud that I decided looked like henna. I applied the mud all over my hands, let it dry completely, got bored and wiped it off, and then went and ate a snack without washing my hands. 💀

Through my adult lens, I realize that this roadside mud was either dog poop, cow poop, infested with trash and human poop, contaminated with leaded gasoline run off, or some unholy combination of all of the above.

Anywho, I am alive and successful by most metrics. This is the memory I remind myself off when I’m having a meltdown about toxins in all of my baby’s stuff

Thought I’d share for laughs!

My parents watched my kid last week, and now her sleep routine is completely messed up

My daughter stayed at my parents house last week while partner and I took a trip. She is 16 months for reference

Before the trip she was sleeping through the night.

My parents decided to put her crib in their room right at the foot of the bed, because my mom decided it was psychologically damaging for her to sleep in her own room.

When she woke up at night from their snoring, they’d take her into her bed and play with her, let her roll around, and give her snacks.

And now she is up multiple times a night constantly asking for snacks, and wanting to play. Dad and I are so exhausted and are zombies at work.

AUGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH 😤😤😤

She struggled with sleep for the first year, and we finally had her on a good routine of sleeping through the night starting at 13 months. It was torture to get her there in the first place.

Posting here instead of calling my mom in a bad mood from being sleep-deprived

Where did all of this personality come from????

Yesterday, she demanded that everyone (mom, dad, grandpa, grandma, dog) stop what they were doing and watch her do the itsy bitsy spider dance. She was quite graceful too, I had no idea she knew how to do the whole thing.

If someone wasn’t paying attention, she’d stop and point at them until they did pay attention, then she’d continue her dance.

Then shortly afterwards, we had our first serious meltdown because I wouldn’t let her walk and eat a banana at the same time.

Where did my baby go???? When did this opinionated toddler take over?

Everyone around me seems to find these tools useful, but I don’t see how. My husband pays for Claude and uses it heavily for his work. My mom friends say they use it for everything, for example researching stuff to buy and making schedules.

Every time I use it, I’m so unimpressed. Perhaps I am now old and bad at technology.

I’m moderately granola, so I tried to use it to find toddler water bottles that fit the criteria I was looking for. I even asked it to use certain subreddits and websites to source suggestions. The results it gave me back were meh, and it got a lot of facts wrong. It was just as much work to go to the website of each recommendation to verify the facts. In the end I ended up going with a bottle it didn’t even recommend after doing my own research.

Similarly, when researching electrolyte products, I wanted one without artificial sugars. So many of the ones it recommended had artificial sugars. Plus I couldn’t verify half of the claims it was making about the pros/cons of each product.

I tried to use it for work for brainless tasks. I wanted it to clean up some notes I had and turn them into bullet points. The result was unnecessarily wordy, and the way it cleaned them up no longer emphasized what I need it to focus on. It was faster and easier to just do it myself.

Engaging in a back and forth to try and get it to correct itself and understand what I’m asking, feels like a waste of time. I can just do the task myself.

What am I missing? I am desperate for an affordable way to simplify my life, offload some of the mental load, and to become more efficient/productive. But I can’t seem to figure out these tools. Is it that my prompting isn’t good? Is there a reliable source through which I can become better at it?
