Reddish urine

My guinea who is a 5 year old female with a very large inoperable tumor had a strangely colored pee this morning. She didn’t cry or seem to be in pain when it happened. I also haven’t given red veggies or food out of the ordinary except for recent pear sticks which she ate quite a few of.

How emergent would this be and is a vet visit required? I hope to not take her to the vet unless ABSOLUTELY necessary. Due to her respiratory issues from the tumor, last time I took her to the vet the stress caused her to hyperventilate and turn blue and she had to be put on oxygen. It was very traumatic. The vet is closed though until Monday so I won’t be able to hear back from them until then.

EDIT: I just watched her pee again and it came out yellow and then after approx 10 seconds it turned red. I feel like it’s not blood now, but I’ve never seen this happen before.

Inside the hay box

She has started to burrow into this hay box hehe. However she may be too big to fit 😭😭 luckily I ordered her a large hay enclosure thing that I’m going to stuff full of hay and she will be able to fully fit inside😍🥰

Why do so many people here hate vegans/veganism?

For context I’m an avid vegan. I recently discovered this page and I have been reading through comments and posts and occasionally commenting. I’ve noticed SO MUCH hate towards vegans and veganism. I’ve seen so much of they all are just doing this for moral purity, or they love this fallacy, or honestly just mocking of veganism as a whole. I’ve also seen a lot of trying to nit pic vegans for things that make them imperfect. Like a lot of us are just out here trying our best to help the animals. Why do you need to attack?

I am so confused because how can you dislike veganism. Like maybe it didn’t work for you, but how does that warrant being disrespectful to the movement as a whole? Like its whole mission is to help animals and reduce harm. If you don’t want to be vegan no one is forcing you.

Like veganism is not evil and bad for everyone. I’m the healthiest and happiest I’ve ever been after a long time vegan. what have vegans ever done to you??

I am posting this as a question but also just to post my thoughts. I hope those of you who are being like this can be more kind and open minded.

Revolution (selamectin) in guinea pigs

My guinea pigs vet prescribed her the puppy and kitten 60mg/ml, 0.25mL revolution for suspected mites. It says on the packaging the recommended dose is 6mg/kg and my guinea pig weighs 1kg. The total content of one dose is 15 mg. I asked the vet about this and they said I should give the full dose still.

I am concerned because my guinea pig has a VERY large inoperable tumor and is pretty fragile. I am pretty sure also that having a tumor doesn’t contribute real weight to the weight that should be used for medication dosing too. Ie. if her tumor is half her body weight then the dose should be based on 0.5kg. And if this is the case then 15 mg seems like way too much.

I don’t want to just do 15 mg because it’s convenient that the tube has that. Even though I asked the vet am still concerned and I wanted to see if anyone here has had experience giving this to their guinea pigs and what the dosing was. And if anyone has advice on what to do.

Research Rats Being Euthanized for no Reason

So I an undergrad working in a lab that does animal research. The only reason I agreed to do this was because they would do it anyways but if I’m there, I can give them good treatment and love and the lab I work in is generally respectful towards them unlike many other labs. Additionally we used to work with pigs that came from factory farms and compared to that, a life with treatment for their chronic infections from the farm and many treats and love was so much better and they showed signs of happiness after a week of arriving.

I then briefly worked with bunnies, and then now I am starting to work with rats.

For context, many animal institutions have training animals which are not tested on but are used for people completing training courses on how to handle them, give injections, etc.

When the training rabbit is retiring, it gets to be adopted. However, I just found out that for rats, they get euthanized and only adopted at institutions who choose to do that. And it’s not just a few rats. I’ve learned that they have many training rats and when the animal center begins to have too many they kill them off. They also euthanize if the rat is “outgrowing” its colony. Meaning it’s just growing to its full size.

Apparently this is allowed by federal law. I am furious. I want to meet with the directors of the whole program to ask them about changing the protocol. However I don’t know how to do this while working under someone who is actually leading the research on the rats. I was thinking I tell her that I want to meet with the directors to learn more, but what if she says no? I also don’t want to do it behind her back because if she finds out that would be terrible. She already knows about my veganism and love for animals, but I just don’t think she knows the extent to which I advocate for them.

This research is very important for my professional development that will allow me to eventually work to reduce animal testing so I can’t just crash out lol. I need to be civil even though I want to scream and tell everyone they are terrible and take all the rats.

Any advice on what to do or general opinions on the matter?

Vegan poem

I saw someone else post their poem about veganism and I was inspired. This is a sonnet I wrote in high school and presented to my class. The looks on their faces… lmao. Oh and also I was the only one in the class who no one clapped for after

Inevitable Misery

What have I done to cause this agony?

Loved too much or had the fate to reside
In forms bearing vulnerability
To the ills of those whom I live beside.
I'm alive to suffer exclusively

This abuse; my soul which dwells in a flesh
Whose consumption craved; and the taste of me
Leading to my inevitable death.

Condemned to cages, I born to meet the knife;
A jaded existence - dread looms in me.

What crime is mine, to live this tortured life?
My voice, so unheard, I plea plaintively;
Who can love, and sanction such demise? This

Abusive world ends in no sweet dismiss.

Vegan guinea pig parents

Hi! I’m curious how many of you guinea parents are also vegan! I feel like it’s more common among guinea/rodent parents to be vegan than say dog/cat parents! It’s also fun because I feel like I’m twins with my guineas being an herbivore and all lol!

Commenting on nonvegan food Reddit: success (sometimes)

Guys I’ve been leaving comments on people posts in nonvegan food pages. I’ve been saying “you should totally try the Trader Joe’s vegan cheese it’s so delicious and even better for the animals!! :)”

Some of my comments are downvoted but I’ve gotten genuine replies and one lady said she was going to check out vegan butter and said she had NEVER heard of it!!! Like I thought everyone knew about that.

I think this is a good way of informing people and spreading awareness in a “polite” way that doesn’t make people get too defensive when called out for their cruelty lol.

I think more of use should start doing this. Especially in the vegetarian subreddit when they use cheese or egg since they are already committed to helping animals.

BEST bowl

Hi everyone! This is my absolute favorite meal EVER. I eat it so frequently. The only downside is the crispy tofu takes some effort to make but it’s so worth it. The sauce is also so delicious. My mom came up with the recipe too ;)

Tofu:
Make wet mix with flour and water (if I’m lazy I skip this step and it’s good but just not as thick and crisp)
Make dry mix with flour water (add cornmeal, spices, and nutritional yeast if desired)
Fry in oil until the color in the photo above. It’s best when you get all sides browned but it’s not fully necessary

Sauce:
Mix peanut butter, soy sauce, miso paste, gochujang, maple syrup, spices, and water (the sauce is very flexible so if you leave out some ingredients or add anything new it will still be good)

For the base I typically do short grain brown rice.

For the side I do just plain cucumbers if I’m lazy, and otherwise I do a cucumber salad with kimchi, white wine vinegar, and spices.

For spices I typically do ginger power, garlic powder, onion powder, and mustard powder!

If anyone decides to try this out or even just the sauce please let me know your opinion. I’m literally obsessed!!!!!

Accidentally ate animal product

Today I realized the kimchi I was eating for the past week contained anchovies and beef bone broth. I feel so disgusted and bad.

I usually get Mother In Laws kimchi (vegan) and I didn’t realize they made a nonvegan version. I noticed the color on the packaging was different but it looked so similar! I just bought when the other one was out it and didn’t think to check the ingredients because I thought it was just some different flavor or something. Then at the store today I see the two next to each other and I realize one says vegan very small on the front. I didn’t even want to know what was in the nonvegan one but I made myself look.

Has something like this happened to anyone else? I know it’s just an accident but I feel so gross and bad :(
