Middle Eastern beef kebab bowls

Middle Eastern beef kebab bowls

We love to make Cava-inspired bowls and just about all of it comes from Trader Joe’s. People don’t like the term slop bowl but that’s what we call it.

This bowl is:

  • White rice
  • TJ’s zhoug sauce
  • Air-fried squash with TJ’s aglio e oglio seasoning
  • Hummus
  • TJ’s paneer, grilled
  • Lettuce tossed with Cava tahini dressing
  • TJ’s Middle Eastern kebabs, heated on a grill
  • Cherry tomatoes
  • Cucumber
  • Red onion
  • Avocado

We’ve done the same idea with the marinated chicken shawarma and most of the other marinated meats. The kebabs are just really, really good.

First impressions of the Aspero-5

I built this Aspero-5 frameset with a lot of stuff I had laying around, which coincidentally included an HB16 bar and ST31 carbon stem. It’s about 19 lbs fully loaded with pedals, mounts, Arundel cages (included with the frame), and such.

Pros:

  • After a couple rides I can say this is straight up one of the best ride qualities I’ve ever had on any bike. It is literally just an S5 for gravel. I also have an S5 so I’m comfortable making that claim. The S5 unfortunately suffers from toe overlap but this bike has an addictive sort of cornering ability that makes you want to dive bomb every corner in sight.

  • Compared to the previous gen Aspero (non-5), it is much less chattery. It feels very planted and smooth. Of course it’s gonna bump around if you try to go ride rooty singletrack (which I have) but way less than I expected.

  • Downtube storage is similar to the P-Series, easy to pack a full size frame pump in there with anything else. I prefer the Lezyne Grip Drive HV.

  • Tire clearance is better than expected. My 45mm G-One RS Pros are sitting around 46.5mm WAM and there looks like ample clearance on both sides. Could absolutely get a 50mm in the front. I’d probably rather try a 45mm blown out to 48mm on a super wide rim. The pics you see where the tire looks super close to the seat tube are a little misleading - the seat tube itself is concave so you’re just seeing the lip of the cutout but there’s tons of space.

  • Threaded BB! Thank god.

  • The brake hose routing was very easy to do at home. The hardest part is just fishing it out of the HB16 bar. But Cervelo makes the integration rather easy with two headset caps and split spacers.

  • Really happy to see a zero offset seatpost on a size 58.

  • They put a ton of effort into the integrated chain-catcher with shims and screws for any size chainring.

———

Cons:

  • The seatpost wedge clamp is once again annoying. I’m used to it because I’ve also had a Soloist, P-Series x2, and the S5 which is the worst of all. At least this one sits relatively close to the surface but I still encountered slipping on my ride today.

  • At 19lbs loaded it’s probably a little heavier than people would want. I have opportunities to go lighter.

  • It has the same lack of snap in the BB when you’re standing up as the S5. Both of them are insanely good at cruising speeds but don’t have that sprinter’s zing. Not a huge deal to me.

  • Nit-picking here, but the black Cervelo logo is nearly impossible to see in almost all lighting.

If you’ve had a different experience, tell me where I’m wrong

I built an Aspero at home

Frame: Five-Black, Size 58 Cockpit: ST31 carbon stem, 110mm Cockpit: HB16 carbon bar, 40cm Tape: Supacaz Star Fade Oil Slick Shifters: Force E1 Brakes: Force E1 Cranks: Force E1 Wide, 170mm Chainring: RED D1 48t Quarq Pedals: Look X-Track Race Carbon Derailleur: Eagle XX1 AXS Chain: Eagle XX1 Rainbow Cassette: Eagle XX1 Rainbow 10-50t Wheels: Reserve 40/44 with DT350s Tires: Schwalbe G-One RS Pro 45mm Cages: Arundel Mandible x2 Saddle: Prologo Dimension NDR, carbon rails

19.05 lbs with pedals, mounts, cages, chain catcher Tires measure 46.5 front / 45.5 rear on rim

I got the frameset brand new for about half price on Facebook and had nearly everything else on hand. Just had to buy brake hoses, BB, new chain, bar tape and cranks and I built it myself at home. It was a fun project and the integrated cabling was pretty easy, but I had prior experience integrating my Soloist and am reusing the whole cockpit from that. I’ve done a lot of my own maintenance but this is the first time I’ve done a whole build from the ground up.

Very pleased that it didn’t explode on me during the first ride lol

Aspero-5 Tire Clearance

I’m getting ready to build up a 2026 Aspero-5 frame soon and I’m curious to hear what anyone else has done regarding their wheels and tires.

I love those Reserve 48/53 GRs, and that’s what I plan to get, but I think with their super wide width, I may have to be a little more conservative on tire choices.

I’ve seen the Bicycle Station boys not clear a 45 Pathfinder on the rear with a Zipp 303S, but I’ve also seen someone on Insta that ran a Maxxis Rambler 45 on the 53 GR with the slightest bit of room.

My ideal tire would be a pair of Caracal Race 45s, but would I be better suited to a 40 rear / 45 front?

High ankle sprain(?) just from running

Wonder if anyone else has experienced this – I started running this year as complement to cycling. It's been enjoyable for me but I have to be careful with pushing my joints/hammies/tendies because I have certain muscles overdeveloped from years of structured training as a cyclist but certain things that aren't worked as much in a static bike position.

This past weekend I ran 10 miles and pushed the last couple miles at a hard pace. I felt great but I noticed some discomfort above my ankle, and being too prideful to slow down, I pushed through it to almost the end of my run where I felt the pop above my ankle – think lower shin between the tib/fib. At that point I couldn't really put weight on that ankle. I RICE'd it and wore a brace or ACE wrap the first few days. Not much swelling though and no bruising. As of five days post-injury, I'm still not confident that I could run but at least by now I can stand on my toes. I can also feel something slipping over the joint when I rotate my foot.

Just to clarify - I did not over-rotate my foot at any point on my run. It was on flat, well-paved trails with fresh shoes. I am very familiar with lower ankle sprains from playing soccer.

My questions are:

  • Have you ever experienced something like this where you 'sprained your ankle' literally by just running like normal?

  • Would you stop running completely until there's no discomfort or tolerate some discomfort?

  • Would you run with an ACE wrap or a more rigid brace? Or nothing?

Could you ever see competitive e-biking happening?

This is a thought experiment so don’t get your panties in a bunch. Sometimes you see dudes like Keegan Swenson that hooning around on eMTBs for fun, so even the big dawgs don’t shame the e-bike in certain recreational situations. E-bikes are becoming way more prevalent every year and as it stands, there’s really only eMTB events that are primarily downhill or enduro.

But I’m talking about like e-road biking or gravel biking. Could it ever happen? I imagine there’d have to be restrictions on the motors, either with the class 3 28mph max or a Nm max applied to all motors. And I’m sure there would be people finding ways to get around those restrictions. There would still be fitness required especially once the motors are capped out, so it’d basically be who is the strongest to haul a 30lb bike around above 28mph.

Or is this basically just motocross with extra steps

Anyone got a lead on the 2027 Aspero colors? (non-5)

All the Marigolds and Black/Charcoal framesets are sold out everywhere. This is the time of year that these colors were announced last year. I can only imagine they’re about to drop new colors … soon?

Building an Aspero vs Aspero-5?

I’m cross-shopping between the 5 and non-5 versions of the Aspero and I’m just curious what yall might think about if the ultra luxurious 5 is worth it. Money is not really an issue for me, first and foremost but the $9k A5 is still a tough pill to swallow.

So that’s why I think there’s a strong case to just build a regular Aspero frame. I actually have a good amount of parts including a 40cm HB16 bar which comes stock on an A5. Allegedly the regular Aspero has slightly better tire clearance (47 vs 45mm)* and the frame weights come out somewhat similarly. If you go by Cervelo’s figures, they quote the Aspero frame + seatpost as 1950g without a handlebar. The A5 is quoted as 2290g with a bar. The bar itself is ~270g so a regular Aspero could be lighter than an A5…? With the same bar it’d be 2220g.

Is there something I’m missing? Other than the AeRoDynAmiCs and the downtube storage. The regular A can’t take as big of a chainring either (46t) but I think you can always make a slightly bigger one fit.

Geometrically - the regular Aspero is actually a steeper head tube and seat tube. Interesting…

Lend me your thoughts.

  • I don’t need MTB tire clearance, I also have a drop bar hardtail that’ll become a flat bar gravel bike.
