Would you work at a vet that does declaws?

For my first job offer for a vet clinic recently. On my first onboarding day the clinic manager did mention that this clinic does declaws. Not willy nilly, but for medical reasons, or if an elderly owner requests it due to the elderly having thinner skin and are at higher risk for infection from cat injuries. Is this pretty standard or is it a red flag?

Any trans poc in the area

Hey yall. If you’re a trans poc in the beaverton/portland/tigard area who needs 23 gauge x 1 inch long hypodermic needles, I have an unopened box of 100 that was sent to me on accident instead of the size i need for my own injections. I don’t know what to do with them so I figured I’d pass them along if anyone needs them. They’re free, sterile and unopened. They don’t come with syringes tho, they’re just the needles. Pickup in central beaverton area near the public library. We can meet up publicly for safety reasons.

Just Moved Here, Bottle Drop Question

I just moved here a few months ago and I’ve been seeing a lot of negativity about your guys’ bottle drop program. I saw a post in r/portland celebrating the closure of on the facilities. Why is the bottle drop so disliked here?

Is this concerning?

Just want some opinions on if i should contact management for a new stove? The picture I attached is of my left front burner. I didn’t notice the rust and holes until recently. Is this something to be concerned about? None of the other burners have this issue and the stove itself works fine. The stove is electric. (Also please ignore the nasty-ness, i am actively cleaning that off)

Where are y’all getting your needles these days?

I normally get them from shopmedvet.com but their website keeps glitching recently so i’m looking for somewhere else besides amazon to order my BD needles in bulk, thank you in advance for any leads.

How much time do you take off when a personal pet passes?

I’ve worked at a GP as office staff for a couple years now. My dog is pretty old and we are thinking it might be time here sometime in a month or so. He is my first dog and so I’ve never had to take time off work to mourn a passing before. Nothing has happened yet but when it does I want to be prepared since this is also my first veterinary job. How much time would you guys says is appropriate to ask off to mourn a pet in your experience?

How do I tell my coworkers I don’t want to play pickleball or go to brunch with them?

So I just started a new job about 3 weeks ago and it’s going great. I get along and fit in well with my team. They’re all really nice people and we have good conversations and banter and I do genuinely enjoy/look forward to working with them each day. However they all like to spend time with each other outside of work as well and this is not my vibe. I recently got asked to joint them for pickleball and brunch. Not only am I not a sporty person, but i think pickleball is lame (sorry to the lovers out there, nothing against you). I also don’t want to have to go buy athletic clothes to go play. As for brunch, Im not against that every once in a while however I am trying to save as much money as possible as my partner and I are starting our new life together.

When I was asked this time I had a genuine excuse that I needed to clean this weekend since my sister is coming into town, which is true, but I don’t think it’s best practice to find an excuse every time. I don’t want to lie to people I like. I think I should just tell them Im not into pickleball and brunch every week, but I need help phrasing it in a way thats “nice” for lack of a better word.

It’s not as though I completely avoid mixing work and personal life, as I will be attending this years work party which will consist of horseback riding and hanging out by a local river, but to me thats different since it’s a 1x/year event.

Thanks everyone!

How many male employees does your clinic have?

I’ve been with my clinic for about 5 years now. I am the only male receptionist, and 1 of 3 men on our 30 person team. The other two are Drs, with one also being the practice owner. In my 5 years, very few men have even applied, especially not for a receptionist role.

Absolutely nothing wrong with this of course. I love my clinic and all the people I work with. I am compensated well for the lifestyle I currently live. I just think it’s an interesting ratio, especially considering we aren’t too far from the days where practicing medicine of any kind was extremely difficult for women or outright forbidden.

How many men work at y’all’s clinics, and what do you think contributes to the overall low number of men in this industry (especially outside of Dr roles)?

Interested to hear y’all’s thoughts!

Why does my neighbor have a ceiling fan and I don’t?

So our units are exactly the same in terms of layout and sqft. I’ve passed by their window on my way out a few times and noticed they have a ceiling fan in their unit where mine only has a light. Did she just replace the light with the fan? Can I do the same? I have 3 overhead lights in my living room and could definitely sacrifice one.

What’s wrong with my lupines and currant?

Hey yall so I’ve got 3 plants for you guys to help me with today. The first two pictures are two separate lupine plants and the last picture is a currant. Our balcony faces North so all three plants get sunlight at the end of the day when the sun begins to set. All of these conditions appeared basically overnight. The first lupine has this white stuff on it, I was afraid to touch it. The second lupine has these abrasions (for lack of a better word), that aren’t full on holes but you can see light through. The currant suddenly developed those brown spots and a lot of her leaves are starting to pale. We just had some multiple day downpour but all three plants have been through that before and haven’t had these issues. All three pots have drainage, and the second lupine pictured is hanging. We don’t have a super tight watering schedule since it rains so often where we are and the soil tends to stay moist when it’s not raining.

ETA: The second lupine pictured is also currently flowering

Interviewing for a vet receptionist job soon.

Hello, just looking for some advice from current vets and vet receptionists. I have an interview coming up
soon and I wanted to get a feel for what you guys look
for in a potential employee/coworker. Im not new to the animal field but most of my experience has been in a shelter setting and the rest of my work history has a strong customer service background. Im really excited about the potential of this position and I want to do the best I can on this interview. Thank you very much in advance!

Is it silly to ask for time to consider offers given the roles I’m applying to?

So long story short I have two interviews coming up, one tomorrow and one on wednesday. One is for ISS Guckenheimer as a cashier, basically they put coffee and cafes etc. in places like corporate buildings and research labs and hire staff for those cafes since research labs don’t hire for those roles themselves. The other is for a veterinary receptionist position. I would be ok with being offered either role as I really just need a job. However, if i happen get offered the cashier job immediately/soon after interviewing without getting the chance to interview/wait for an offer for the vet reception job would it be silly of me to ask the ISS interviewer for a bit of time to consider the offer? I feel like it would be weird since normally people do that for specialized fields/salaries jobs rather than a simple cashier job. If it’s not weird, how should I ask it?

I got an interview!

Hey yall, after a long period of unemployment and desperation I finally landed an interview and Michael’s. It’s been so long since I’ve had to interview anywhere so I guess Im just asking this to better prepare myself and feel less nervous. What kind of stuff do they ask? Are there any specific answers the hiring managers really like to hear? How should I explain my employment gap?

Is this a scam? Got a text from Winco..

The only reason i’m not sure is because I did apply for this exact position yesterday and the area code is consistent with the state im in. I applied on the company site, not a job board, and I do believe I put my phone number down but I’ve never known a company to text about job offers. Thanks in advance.

Pretty much as the title says, just got a cat and am looking for a vet. If they specialize in cats thats even better. Preferably someone who doesn’t charge an arm and a leg. Thank you!

Hello,

Long story short I will be taking in my moms cat and I need some advice on what to feed her. For her whole life she’s been fed costco dry food and canned tuna. Im going to change this as I know they’re not supposed to eat tuna every day but i’m wondering what wet food I should substitute for that instead. Should I get something tuna based/flavored since she likes that already or should I try something else? Any brand recommendations for mid tier to nicer stuff? Thanks in advance!
