Abandoned Meat Factory

If it weren't for their illegal dumping of pig blood into a creek, maybe this location would stand a chance.

This Columbia Meat Packing company operated for nearly a century as a local institution before becoming embroiled in a major environmental scandal. In 2010, a drone captured aerial photographs showing a dark red stream of pig blood emptying from the facility into Cedar Creek. This discovery triggered a massive joint investigation by local, state, and federal authorities, which revealed that the plant had bypassed the city's sewage system to illegally dump thousands of gallons of industrial wastewater and animal blood.

Found a stray kitten in an abandoned meat factory

As the title suggests, I found this kitten during another one of my urban exploration "sessions" in an abandoned meat packaging plant. I heard it's meowing a few minutes after entering, but obviously not wanting to interfere with it or encounter its mother, I ignored its cries and explored around. About 30-40 minutes in, I decided it was time to leave. As I approached where I entered, I suppose it must have heard me, as it immediately started meowing again after a while of silence.

I decided to look for it, curious as to whether or not it was a litter or just one kitten. Turns out it was just them, all alone in a dark room surrounded by dirty boxes and other miscellaneous garbage. I waited for about 10 minutes for its mother to arrive, but it started getting late. Upon picking it up, I noticed just how skinny it was under its fur; maybe it was meowing out of hunger or thirst?

I don't know what I should do, as I don't really deal with any animals outside of my dog. Any thoughts?

Old House; New Born

A compilation of just some of the many abandoned houses that one can pass by on a roadtrip. What struck me was this dismantled crib...maybe there might be a story attached.

Longhorn Cavern State Park

This state park features a sinkhole leading to a massive, rare underground cave carved entirely by an ancient river that was first found and used for shelter by Comanche Indians roughly 350-400 years ago. Later, around 1848, it was officially discovered by Anglo settlers, who went on to use its chambers for manufacturing Civil War gunpowder using bat feces. At some point, its caves served as venues for underground jazz dance parties, dining, and church service.

Abandoned Kindred Hospital

Constructed in 1983, this abandoned LTACH facility used to specialize in the extended hospitalization and rehabilitation of their patients. It ceased its operations two years post-Covid (Summer of 2021), due to a filed WARN notice. While official reasons for its closure isn't publicly available, one can speculate it was for financial benefit, as by closing down this facility (and many of their other ones), Kindred Healthcare would eliminate redundancy, improve efficiency, and concentrate specialty programs at fewer locations.

The Westcave Discovery Grotto

Decided to visit Westcave Outdoor Discovery Center's famous grotto, and needless to say, I was left wondering how people still view Texas as only a desert with saloons and cowboys.

A stunning collapsed limestone grotto featuring a lush, tropical microclimate, a 40-foot waterfall that never ceases its flow, an emerald pool, and a hidden one-room cave (slide #7).

The Symmetry of the Capitol

(ALTHOUGH I'M SURE MANY OF YOU HAVE GOOD POINTS TO BRING UP ABOUT OUR GOVERNMENT, PLEASE DON'T BRING IT HERE. I DON'T WANT THIS POST TO BE TAKEN DOWN.)

Paid the capitol a visit, and couldn't ignore the intricacy and attention-to-detail its architecture contained within its walls, not to mention the symmetry. The Texas Sunset Red Granite cladding and walls add a great touch, not only for aesthetics, but to remind all of those who enter where they will be once they step back out of those doors.

House on a Hill

As the title suggests, I found this house through Google's satellite imaging; an abandoned house situated atop a small hill. The structure represents Traditional American Vernacular Farmhouse architecture, which incorporates distinct Folk Victorian stylistic influences; most likely built somewhere around the late 1800's to early 1900's.

Hypocrites are all around us

I was recently watching a documentary on the Samuelites, a branched-off following from the FLDS (Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints) with my mother, and, as she always does when we're watching documentaries on cults, she proclaimed that, "Cults are so messed up...I don't understand how people can fall for these things. It's ridiculous."

I bit my tongue, as I always do when this happens, because not only is she a devoted Roman Catholic, but she herself was almost apart of a pyramid scheme. I mention the latter because of the hierarchical control and organized membership-status that both MLM (Multi-Level Marketing) companies and cults share. If it wasn't for the decreasing numbers in her bank account, then I don't know where we would be financially.

It is like watching a hare make fun of a rabbit for not being born with their eyes open, when in fact, both were blind at the very start.
