"Want One" Enhanced CD Commentary

"Want One" Enhanced CD Commentary

I was checking out the enhanced CD contents on "Want One" and it looks like all of the cool extras are unfortunately linked to this "secret website". Since it's been over 20 years, of course all the links are dead. Luckily the two bonus tracks are easy to find elsewhere, but I can't find the commentary clips of Wainwright talking about each song anywhere! Any chance any of you fans have them saved to your computer from back in the day? Or maybe there's a Rufus archive I don't know about? Would love some help

Kara's Flowers - '90s Holster (Stereo Mix/Remaster)

This is a fan stereo mix and studio remaster of the unreleased song " '90s Holster" by Kara's Flowers, from their scrapped first studio album on indie label OMAD Records (often referred to as "OMAD Recordings) in 1995.

Previous drummer, Ryan Dusick shared the recording of this track on his Instagram with a montage of different clips and pictures from the band's early years. Unfortunately, unlike other leaked OMAD tracks, the video has different sound effects for each slide. Furthermore, the audio Dusick shared is strangely in mono.

Using some stem-splitting and de-noising algorithms, I removed the sound effects and separated each instrument into makeshift multitracks. From there I used songs from "The Fourth World" as reference and made a true stereo mix. The sound won't sound quite like other OMAD songs, but I feel like "The Fourth World" has a superior sound.

Hopefully, this mix will give you a better idea of what the song would've sounded like if it was properly finished (or released).

Let me know what you think! Should the band have put this one on "The Fourth World"? Do the lyrics make any sense? Enjoy!

The Strokes - In Her Prime (Is This It Version)

This is fan re-mixing of the song "In Her Prime" from The Strokes' very first, self-titled EP, to make it sound more akin to the songs on Is This It.

Using a lossless source, I separated each instrument using some stem-splitting algorithms. Using "Soma" as my main reference track, I added simulated analog tape compression, telephone distortion on the vocals, and a generous amount of EQ to match their 2001 sound.

A few tracks from Is This It have self-recorded sampled drums that were then programmed. I decided to retain the original recording and just do a simple re-mixing of the demo. However, if anyone is interested in taking this mix further, I'd be more than happy to provide my artificial stems.

I've attached a download link for my mix in the comments of the video.

Let me know what you think! Should they have recorded this track for the album? Do you like Julian's vocals better with distortion? Enjoy!

Interpol - Galiván (Studio Mix/Master) [2002 "15" Studio Version]

This is a fan mixing and mastering of the 2002 studio recording of the song "Galiván" (sometimes referred to as "Cubed" or "Mascara") by Interpol.

The version most fans are familiar with was released on their third demo, through the 2012 anniversary re-release of Turn On The Bright Lights. Another recording more devoted fans might know, came from the Antics sessions, and was released as a bonus track for their self-titled album. Unfortunately the demo version is lacking in fidelity (Banks' vocals are frequently indistinguishable) and the Antics version is completely instrumental.

A few years ago, an early unfinished and unmastered copy of Turn On The Bright Lights labeled "15" surfaced online through reddit user u/G_Dub22. This copy had studio-quality recordings of the songs "Gavilán" and "Precipitate", as well as some minor differences in certain tracks compared to the official release. Unfortunately, these leaked studio recordings were burned to a CD in a non-lossless format, resulting in audible artifacts from file compression (mainly heard in the consonants of vocals and cymbal crashes).

By utilizing some stem-splitting and audio-upscaling algorithms, I was able to not only restore fidelity to the "15" recordings, but mix and master them to sound akin to the official release of TOTBL. I used a few tracks for mixing & mastering reference–mainly "The New" and "PDA", but after getting feedback from multiple fans, I feel satisfied with this final mix.

I also designed the cover for the video using the Black EP for reference and images from the band's 2002 website.

I've attached a lossless download link in the description.

Let me know what you think! Should I do "Precipitate" next? Does my mix/master make the track more enjoyable? Let me know!

Feedback on Mixing & Mastering for Gavilan (Studio Version)

So from the early version of TOTBL (often referred to as "15"), there were studio recordings of both "Gavilan/Cubed" and "Precipitate". The only issue is, the recordings on this CD they came from have unfinished mixing & mastering, and they're lossy/wavering in quality (you can really tell on the consonants of Paul and the cymbals).

Using some different algorithms, I'm attempting to restore the quality of the Gavilan recording, and mitigate the artifacts from the lower quality export. I'm also trying to mix and master the song to sound akin to the finished album.

I've definitely made some progress, but I'm wondering if there's any big fans of the band who really know the sound of TOTBL that could critique my mix/master so far? I'm using "The New" as my main reference, but I think a real person could make my edit even better.

Pinegrove - I'm Not Ready (Studio Remix/Remaster)

This is a fan mixing and mastering of the unreleased Pinegrove song "I'm Not Ready". The original recording used is taken from a concert at WFMU's "Monty Hall" in New Jersey, August 5th, 2016 (although it was performed often on the tour). You can watch the unedited performance here: https://youtu.be/pyQvNY8ZtMI?si=Ne9EOODj8b6UhseJ

I split the song into individual stems using a few different algorithms, and then added some ambience, reverb, and compression to polish the recording up. Because of the initial compression of the WFMU video, I also had to individually normalize different sections of the snare as well.

Since this song was only performed after Cardinal was released, I assumed it was a track in contention for Skylight. I used a few tracks from the album to reference for mixing. Ultimately though, I just wanted the song to feel more stereophonic and balanced.

Unfortunately, this is probably the closest to a "studio recording" we'll ever get. Let me know what you think! Should they have put this on Skylight?

I (F21) got sent someone else's security deposit, now she (F27) wants to be friends?

My old crappy apartment complex ended up sending both someone else's (and my) security deposit to us. We tried sending it back twice, but it returned to us both times. I even gave the complex a call but they never called back, so I looked up the name (let's call her Chloe) on Instagram and sent her (27F) a DM explaining the situation. When she finally responded, I ended up just driving to her place and dropping it off. Her roommate (34F) answered the door kindly and said Chloe wasn't home, but she'd give it to her.

When I got home she texted: "Omg I’m so sorry! Like I said I never get on here but thank you so much for doing that for me. Most people would’ve literally thrown it away. I appreciate you. My roommate said you seem like someone we would be friends with too lol so if you ever need more friends we’d be happy to hang"

As a 21 year old, most of my friends are close in age, but I definitely get along with some of my older coworkers. It just seemed a little weird that someone 6 years older than me (with a 34 year old roommate) would want to be friends, especially the way she asked me. 21 and 27 seem like such different points in someone's life, even though we're both adults. I mean I haven't even graduated college yet and she's been a practicing hairdresser for at least four years now.

I even texted back something like "lol wait y’all know i’m like, 21 right?"

but she just said "lol I mean no but does that matter?😂"

They seem like cool people (and it would be cool to have some more friends), but this feels a little weird. I'm mostly trying to figure out how to interpret this. I can't tell if this was just a polite thing to say after I helped Chloe, or if it was a genuine invitation. I'm also not sure whether I'm overthinking the age difference between us. I'd be interested to hear how other people would read this situation and whether you've ever made friends in a similarly unexpected way?

Loved TOTBL, couldn't get into Antics. What am I missing?

I saw some stupid edit of a frog doing a backflip in slo-mo on Tik-Tok and "Obstacle 1" was the music playing in the background. I was instantly hooked, so I checked out the rest of the album during my life drawing class the next day. I fell in love with Turn On The Bright Lights from the minute the bass kicked in on "Untitled". Every song is perfect to me. I even bought the album a few months later because of how much I liked it.

After listening to the B-sides and extras from the era (huge fan of "Specialist") I thought I'd delve a little deeper. Obviously Antics was next, and I had high hopes since Apple Music put it as Interpol's second "essential album". Unfortunately it just never clicked with me though.

"Evil" is obviously pretty great, and "Next Exit" is a fun change up of instrumentation that has grown on me. Everything else is a little forgettable and uninteresting to me though. All the songs are faster, so there's almost none of that eerie, gothic, slow build style that I loved so much with TOTBL. Banks' voice also sounds different to me? He has more of this shaky vibrato and a softer, subdued delivery on a lot of the songs. The band sounds less warm and powerful too, nothing feels quite as intense and emotional.

Our Love To Admire has been in my rotation and I'm definitely liking it, but I guess I just don't really get Antics. It got an anniversary deluxe treatment, so I'm assuming it's held in high regard by the fans and the band. What am I missing? What are some things you really like about it, etc.

Cave (Single) Artwork Restored/Remastered

Restored album art for the "Cave" single. Edited hi-res scan sourced from iTunes. Colors and dimensions based off of multiple photos of the CD and Vinyl. Text re-rendered in Adobe Illustrator. Original artwork by Tanya Andrew. Slide 2 is current streaming cover.

It always bothers me how the pre-The Resistance singles on streaming (or anywhere else) are just squashed, dusty, discolored scans of the CD single artwork, rather than an original digital source like Showbiz has. Using de-pattern and de-noising algorithms in photoshop, plus some color adjusting and font matching, I successfully restored the original artwork. All half-tone artifacts from printing and dust on the iTunes scan has been removed.

What do you think? Do you like this single artwork? Enjoy!

Story Behind This “Showbiz” Album Art Variant?

So for a few press samplers and a Korea(?) exclusive pressing of the Showbiz CD, there’s what appears to be an early rendering of the album artwork with less glare/fog that makes the woman’s face clearer, more glow behind the planets, and a more complete soundwave/sound wall graphic in the background.

It’s been theorized that the artist behind the cover (Tanya Andrew) is the reference model for the piece, so I wonder if there was some issue with using her face? I also wonder if maybe the background stuff added an extra ink color that could’ve made printing more expensive.

It’s just strange that the early version was even printed at all. To be honest, I think I like it a little more. It makes the album look less dated to me.

Does anyone have any information on why this change happened?

I Remastered The Glow Pt. 2's Album Cover

Once I found out the album cover was actually taken from an old dutch cookbook (Calvé Delft's Winterboekje), I wondered what the album cover would look like if it wasn't worn-down and stained.

I took the yellowed colors from the album cover, but I made a version with the original cookbook print's colors too. I also zoomed-out the artwork a little, to make it feel less like a rectangular piece cropped into a square (that bottom left corner's border getting cut off always bothered me)

I don't mean to imply that the artwork looks worse with the wear. Obviously the weathering of the album cover is part of its charm, and I think it's representative of the lo-fi production of the record. However, I think it's nice to have this cleaner variation for those who want something more simplistic or reproducible.

All of my work was done in Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop, with the majority of the work coming from finding the best source image and utilizing/tweaking the Image Trace feature.

I've uploaded the full artwork in addition to some different sizes of my edits. Enjoy!

[REQUEST] Old 2012 Newsletter Emails?

Hello.

I've been working on designing a CD for the band's first album, "Meridian". I'm trying to be era-accurate with everything I design (which means doing some really deep digging) but one thing I'm missing is any regards or info about the album when it originally released, on February 29th, 2012.

There were no interviews about Meridian specifically. There are a few reviews from 2012, but nothing with the band's sentiments included. I've checked Facebook but unfortunately all the band really said was "Here's our new album". I even tried to see if there were any words said at the release show I could transcribe, but there were only ever clips from a few songs they performed that were posted.

Today I was thinking about the newsletter they talked about when they released the album. If you bought the album on Bandcamp, you'd automatically be signed up for it. Unfortunately I wasn't following the band in 2012, so I have no access to these emails. The archive of newsletters on the band's official website only goes back to 2022, and I believe those letters were when the band switched to a different service.

Are there any OG pinenuts who still have those old newsletter emails from back in the day? If you could share them with me I'd greatly appreciate it! It would add a more personal touch to the CD I'm working on, rather than just the credits.

Finally hung up my Cork Tree Poster

I designed the poster myself! It took a long time compositing the unedited cover image without all the text and stuff, but it gave me a lot more space to work with. I also used official assets and fonts that I sourced from the album’s digital booklet PDF, so everything is era-accurate.

Vitamins Single Cover [FAN-MADE]

A while back I remastered the "Vitamins" recording that came out (yes all the nice sounding versions on YouTube are reposts on my remaster) It got taken down obviously, and I can't share it here, but here's the album cover I made for it!

I wanted to emulate the style of The Blue Room EP's album cover (even though the song was on [unreleased] The Panic EP) I used a stock image of some pills, edited and colorized it in photoshop, and then matched the font + sizing and placement of the text on The Blue Room EP.

Again, I can't share this file, but if you've got it already, here's a different option for the album cover in your collection!

Enjoy!

Fix You (Single Version) [NO WHITE SHADOWS CROSSFADE]

This is a fan edit of Coldplay's song "Fix You" that restores the original intro of the song. On the album "X&Y", White Shadows' outro organ crossfades into the intro of Fix You. The single release of the song has an abbreviated intro that starts with just Chris's vocals. In the modern world of music streaming, this single version is not the most common. However, there is no version of the song that maintains the organ intro but excludes the crossfade of White Shadows. Many people are bothered by this, especially when playing the song in a separate playlist, or using newer crossfade features.

When there was a leak of many Warner Music instrumentals, unmastered instrumental versions of many Coldplay songs were included. The leaked instrumental of "Fix You" had no crossfade. Using this unmastered instrumental, I synced the official release to the instrumental. With a little EQ I successfully restored the original organ intro to the song.

Enjoy!

Thriller (No Jay-Z Edit)

This is an edit of Fall Out Boy's song "Thriller" from "Infinity On High" that removes the ad-libs and vocals from rapper Jay-Z.

I have no issues with the Jay-Z feature on this song. I actually think it's really cool that Pete and the band were able to cross mainstream and genre boundaries with it. However, I've always wondered what the song sounded like before they got Jay-Z onboard.

I'm sure there were some edits made to the song after they got Jay-Z's vocals that we'll never know, but this edit hopefully gives a better idea of what the early track would've sounded like. It's also here for anyone who is bothered by his inclusion.

Let me know what you think! Do the ad-libs enhance the track? Do the Jay-Z bits bother you?
