Spark in the wild
I had a cat who would walk on a leash. She was hyper so there were days I would take her out as an act of self preservation. I had her euthanized 5 years ago at the age of 17. I was heartbroken.
Four months later, I rescued a tortie who was living behind my apartment building with her kittens. I thought since she had been outside she would be easy to train to go outside. She, however, decided that indoor life was wonderful and she never wanted to go outside again. She put holes in three of my t-shirts before I gave up.
About 6 weeks ago, I took in a kitten who needed a new home. He is a maniac and bounces off walls and attacks my tortie. He's not yet 6 months old and is bitey. I grab him and take him outside where he can launch himself at bugs and run up trees. There was no training involved. I put on the harness and the leash and he just goes.
I knew I missed taking a cat outside. What I had forgotten about is how happy people are when they see him. There was a boy the other day who did a double take and he yelled, "Oh my god, it's a cat!" There was a young guy a few days ago who was looking on the ground for cigarettes. He was trying to find those that hadn't been smoked all the way. Spark was about 4 feet up a tree hanging onto the trunk and looking at the guy. The guy looked up and saw Spark and smiled a big smile. If just for a moment, he smiled. I'd forgotten how a cat on a leash can make people smile.
