Overkill to ask to make this better?

Overkill to ask to make this better?

Took my car in to have the hood, roof, and bumpers re-sprayed. The bumpers were replacements, and the hood is original, but it needed new paint because E46s are notorious for the clear failing on the hood and roof.

All the panels on the car were original paint color. The shop suggested they blend the fenders to match the hood repaint, and this is the result.

So before all of these were factory matching (A pillar, door, fender), but in order to match the hood, they blended the fender into this. Not a professional, but I would guess the fender and door being different shade/tint would be more noticeable than if the hood and fender were different shade/tint.

The only panels not repainted now on the car are the 4 doors and the quarter panels.

36 Inch Tool Box?

Reviews from this seem overall positive, but no stores near me carry this in stock. Anyone have first-hand experience with this tool box? I currently have one of the old school brushed metal/bare metal 27” combos from Kobalt that has served me well for a long time, but during a recent move the movers somehow bent the entire bottom of the cart causing the wheels to fold under and the bottom drawer to not work any longer.

I picked up a 42” Heavy Duty Husky combo for around the same price, but it just seems like too much tool box. Just a hobbyist working on my cars, and the 27” fit most of my stuff, but it was kinda crowded. The 36” seems to strike a balance between the two. I just wish something other than blue or red was in stock (the white or dark gray look really good).

I had initially thought about going for a US General box, but the latches are straight garbage and they do not have soft close like the Kobalt.

Weber slate paper towel holder alternative

I didn’t like the holder that hung the paper towels over the end. Too expensive and interfered with the cover when installed.

Harbor Freight had their US General magnetic paper towel holders on sale for $10, so this was my solution. Works great so far!

Tree nut/Peanut allergy classroom. Need healthy snacks for our kiddo.

We’ve dealt on and off with various allergy restrictions in our 6 year old kiddo’s classroom, but this year his room has both a tree nut allergy and a peanut allergy.

His snacks are given in the classroom, so there is not the ability to have an allergy-friendly table like in the lunchroom. We typically would send him with some trail mix, dried fruit, chocolate almonds, and sometimes some of the mini cheese/cracker sandwiches. We try to minimize waste, so we would usually buy in bulk from Costco and send them with a mix of all of the above ingredients. But with the restriction of zero peanuts or tree nuts, we’re struggling to find a snack that is reasonable that isn’t just all carb and allows for some flexibility (we would change up the dried fruit and trail mix “mix” fairly regularly).

Has anyone dealt with both of these restrictions at the same time and found a good solution for a healthy snack that won’t just give a sugar high and have them crash before lunch? Preferably something that we can make in advance and pack snacks at the beginning of the week.

Persistent intake cam codes after swap

I’m struggling with pinning down the last issues with this motor swap.

Originally 325i touring 5 speed, now with a full zhp drivetrain w/ 6 speed.

All new sensors, gaskets, pulleys, plugs, CCV. Rebuilt VANOS. Original injectors, coils, DISA, O2 sensors, ICV, TB.

Upon startup I was running into a VERY rough running condition, some pops, and engine shaking. It immediately threw a code for Intake cam sensor mechanical (26b6). I poke around some and think that maybe the intake CPS was dead on arrival, so I put a known good sensor on (had to remove the intake VANOS solenoid to get to it). Fired it up and it ran like new.

Fast forward 6 weeks and I finally got all the M Tech 2 body work installed, went to fire it up to back out of the garage and the misfire is back. Ran the codes, and its 26b6 again. Searched some more and found it could be the VANOS solenoid, so I go to my parts engine, pull a solenoid and swap it. Start the car and it runs smoothly for 30 seconds or so, but then goes right back to running like trash. Engine shaking, popping, etc.

Searched more and found that the solenoids can get gummed up so I pulled the intake one and tried to clean it out. When I shook it initially, it didn’t have any movement, but after some brake clean, I could hear it moving inside.

Reinstalled it, cleared adaptations, cleared codes, and started it up. It seems to be running fine, no crazy shaking or misfires at all. But after driving it around for a few minutes, the code came back, this time with 26ba.

I’m stumped, and short of throwing a fully rebuilt Dr Vanos unit on here, not sure what other steps to take.

PFA of my car mostly put back together.

TV for retro-ish gaming?

I have my living room TV that is a few year old OLED that I run my Series X and Switch 2 on, but I have a modest collection of older consoles that I want to set up in my kids room so they can enjoy them. I don’t plan on going all-out on another OLED just to play N64, as good as that could look.

I’ll be running: SNES, N64, Xbox 360, Wii, Switch

I figure something around the 55” class would work out well and I’ve been looking at basic LED TVs to fit the bill. Anything that is a must-have, or must-avoid for this use case? Some of the low tier TVs out there on a serious budget have junk built in like Roku or Fire TV. Not sure how that will affect the utility of the TV at all. Should I be looking for something with local dimming? High nits (room is not crazy bright, but NOT light controlled)?

As for inputs, I have an AV receiver that I’ll be running everything through, so lots of ports on the TV isn’t hugely important.

Acceptable orange peel/DA swirls?

Took this into a shop for the notorious failing clear on an E46. Not an all over, just a mostly all over. Needed hood, roof, bumpers (replaced), skirts (replaced) and rear wing. Fenders were blended.

I rejected the car once for copious amounts of DA swirls in the hood. They re-sprayed it, but now I’m faced with a much more pronounced orange peel on the hood than any other panel. First photo is the hood, second is the roof, and third is a door which is factory.

There is also a small spot of DA swirls on an unnoticed part of the hood from previous.

Am I splitting hairs here, or should this be done better?

They also missed 2 scrapes in the roof which they claimed they repaired that panel (last photo is an example of one, there are 2 just like this. Not new damage, it is painted and cleared).

Off the shelf cart options?

Moving into a new place and downsizing a bit so I don’t have my tools with me yet, and won’t for a while.

Recently purchased a Koda 2 Pro just before moving here and want to get it fired up. What sort of off the shelf options are there to use for an oven this big? I have seen the Nuuk and Feasto options, but not sure which would fit this oven well. Or am I just best off going with the Ooni branded cart?

Keyed Smart Lock Options for Falcon Deadbolt?

Moving into a rental and their only stipulation for us to have a smart lock installed is that their key still works. We’ve had Yale in the past which was super straightforward using the Yale Nest lock so the key functionality was retained.

We are moving to a place that uses Falcon and I can’t find much online other than it is (maybe?) owned by Schlage. Beyond that, I can’t find much about key type, core, compatibility, etc.

So my question is two parts:

1 - Are keyed smart locks (or keyed deadbolts in general) based on the key type more than the brand? I.e. will any lock compatible with this blank work?
2 - If this key blank is common across other deadbolts, would the core potentially be compatible, or the one in the keyed smart lock be able to be re-keyed to match?

We don’t have to retain the door deadbolt hardware or really anything outside of this key continuing to work to access the home.

Thanks in advance!

Alaska Cruise Haul

I’ve made it a point to try to get gin when I travel that has something unique to offer and is only available locally, or regionally at most. Some offerings from Vancouver, Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan.

I’ve tried all but the empress. I don’t have the expertise or ability to rate them in detail, they are just ones I favored while visiting.

Any regrets upgrading to Koda 2 Pro?

Purchased a Koda 16 on closeout from Best Buy and haven’t even had the chance to use it yet, when I stumbled into the sale for the Koda 2 Pro recently.

For all the added features, has anyone upgraded from an older generation Koda with the L burner, to the tapered double burners on the second gen Koda and regretted it? From what I can tell, you still have to turn the pizza. One is just a 180 deg turn vs 90 on the other. Am I missing something otherwise? Not planning to drop $350 on a fancy spinning pizza stone.

For context, we’re a family of 4 so we’d be maxing out either oven. I just don’t know if I should keep this 2 Pro if the Koda 16 is a great oven in it’s own right.

Alaskan FOMO

FOMO on Alaskan Cruise

We’re going on the Disney Wonder soon to Skagway, Juneau, and Ketchikan (like REALLY soon, a few days from now), and I have a mix of buyer’s remorse and FOMO for shore excursions.

This is our first Alaskan cruise (done plenty from Florida) and we’re beyond excited. I don’t believe this will be a once-in-a-lifetime for us.

Currently our plan is for the White Pass Scenic Railway in Skagway, Juneau we have something through the cruise line of “Mendenhall glacier and whale quest”, and for Ketchikan we didn’t book anything.

My thought was to cancel the Juneau excursion and just rent a car to drive up to the glacier, maybe hike it, and then potentially find a local whale watching boat trip in the afternoon or around lunch. I’m pretty happy with Skagway, unless we’re just missing the mark with it. Ketchikan just didn’t have any excursions that caught our eye.

We are typically a family that just wanders off the boat and never does an excursion, but rather enjoy the local culture ourselves and explore what we can. 2 kiddos in elementary school if that helps the calculus. In 5 cruises we’ve done 1 excursion and we’re really disappointed with it (Baths at Tortola, BVI). Not saying we’d be automatically disappointed in the Alaskan ones, but we usually lean towards self-guided stuff.

What are we missing? Is the railway worth the $650 for the 2 hour ride, or are we better off hiking somewhere? Is $200 normal for a car rental in Juneau or should we cab/bus to the glacier (I’ve heard by the time the bus gets there its already packed)?

Sorry for the somewhat disjointed post. Going through a super busy season in life right now and the cruise planning is adding more stress than excitement.

Replacement hardware for feet?

Does anyone happen to know the specs (size/pitch/length) for the feet mounting brackets hardware? Mine were rusted after some neglect in storage and trying to fix it up, but can’t check the size accurately since the nut snapped off inside.

Refurb 13 year old Genesis or buy new?

This espresso brown Genesis was given to me by a friend leaving the country. Seems to be great build quality relative to my brand new Slate, but corrosion is taking its toll. Are the new Genesis models build anywhere near as nice, or are they similar to the Slate? Just trying to decide whether to rehab this thing for $400-500, or go pick up a new 3 burner Genesis on closeout.
