Better endgrain pic

Got a better slice and a pic under a microscope. Doesn’t look like the pic of poplar endgrain in the wood database. I would have posted this pic in a comment on the original post but that feature seems to be disabled for this sub. Original post: https://www.reddit.com/r/wood/s/5C2BgbKnmU

Wood ID

Edit: better endgrain pic here: https://www.reddit.com/r/wood/s/5yo27RUf5r
A friend gave me this cutoff that was in his elderly father’s house. His father was a restoration carpenter on old houses in the Baltimore area, and supposedly this was a cutoff from pieces he’d use for fireplace mantles. He recalls his father talking about Mahogany a lot, but I don’t think this is that. It’s pretty dense, quite hard, non-porous on the face, but the endgrain I shaved does look like it has some little tiny pores, they just don’t show through to the face like oak or ash. Color varies from light brown to darker (but not rich brown like you’d see in walnut) to almost greenish in spots. I’ve worked with all the common eastern hardwoods (maple, oak, ash, walnut, poplar, birch) and I can confidently say it’s none of those. Any ideas??

Fair price on Dynaco A-25

Not sure yet whether or not the crossovers have been recapped. Seller is asking $350.

Factory Compact Disc Player

I put on disc one from Led Zeppelin box set.

OG base stereo 2018. Likely last year with CD player.

Dazed and Confused was 3 Dimensional and surrounded me completely.

Apparently CD’s have about three times the audio data vs Bluetooth or USB.

The quality of sound disappeared slowly and I never really noticed how much we were missing musically until now.

KLH Model 6 for $200?

They’ve not been restored as far as I know, but the seller says they work. Grilles look nice. I’d do a full restoration on them (would be my first time, but I am a woodworker so no problem restoring the cabs and have done some soldering here and there). I was thinking I’d offer him $100. Thoughts?

New Large Advent Speakers

See any reason why I shouldn’t go for these at $300? They have been professionally refoamed and crossovers recapped. Cabs look really nice.

KLH 105

Okay. Got a lot of good feedback on the last few inquiries about vintage speakers. How about these KLH 105’s? For context, I’m looking for something that would pair well with my Sansui 881 and also look pretty nice with real wood veneer. Even if I don’t buy these, your comments are super helpful to navigate in my marketplace quest. Thanks!!

Dual 1246

Not seeing a lot of these on here (lots of 1200 series but not many 1246). Any info or tips would be great. Seems to be running smooth and it’s very clean. Paid $175 (too much?). Only noticeable damage is some scuffs on the dust cover. No cracks though, might try to buff them out at some point. Going to pair it with a Sansui 881 and looking for decent speakers to finish the setup.

Investing/growing for the short term, knowing I may be using this as a down payment next year

I’m getting a divorce and we are selling our home and splitting the proceeds. We have a decent amount of equity even though we’ve only had the house for 6 years, so I’ll likely walk away with around 140k.

I’m pretty sure I want to buy a small house, and would use this as a down payment, but I live in a tough market and the likelihood of finding something right away that I can afford are slim. I’ll more than likely end up signing a lease on an apartment. It’s possibly I might be able to negotiate an 8 month lease, then month to month, so I can be ready to buy in the spring.

But then again, maybe I won’t mind apartment life and will end up not buying a house at all. To early to say.

What’s the smartest way to grow this 140k in the next 8-12 months? Just a HYSA, or are there better options?
