Were there any early vertical grips besides the modified pistol grips and the KAC?

Been thinking about a vert grip for my retro and it got me wondering, were there any more obscure ones out there back before the KAC in 1995 (or a little after)? Especially curious if there was anything made for the plastic clamshell handguard vent holes like the homemade pistol grip ones.

What’s your experience with switching between normal and barefoot soles?

I’m tempted to try a barefoot model for my second pair from them but I was wondering if it feels weird regularly switching between the two. You tend to get very used to things you use and experience on a daily basis and I wasn’t sure if that would feel off or annoying in some way throwing that into the mix with all my more typical shoes

Anyone else dealing with a broken air conditioner right now and finally understanding European pain and sorrow

Thankfully getting the ancient dead one replaced tomorrow but this is a disgusting experience and I feel bad for all the unconditioned people

Are there any good quality depictions of the Alps fighting from the Italian front in WW1

This has always been completely insane to me and I’m surprised it does not get talked about more, at least in my experience. The fact that they were able to do this on this scale during that time period is wild. Got curious about it again recently and was wondering if anyone has successfully translated it to a film. Seems like it would be a challenge to do well but I think it would be very interesting to see given the very unusual type of war and it being exceptionally miserable with the supply chain challenges and the amount of casualties from the elements and avalanches

The Italian front in WW1 included combat high up in the Alps which was incredibly harsh and difficult to sustain. Was this the first period of large scale warfare on mountains like this and if not when did armies become capable of doing it?

I’ve been looking at photos from the Alps fighting then and to my modern self it is crazy to me they were doing that even during WW1. Which made me wonder if it was as recent or unique of a thing as I’d imagine it to be.

I watched King of New York (1990) for the first time, I’d love to hear thoughts on what made it so controversial upon release

Went into this totally blind and really enjoyed it, at least the parts it does well. The style is off the charts and everyone is performing their ass off with an amazing soundtrack backing it up. I loved so many aspects of it that it is disappointing how wonky the script and structure is though. It feels like it doesn’t actually develop its ideas very well and like one reviewer said, the movie remains just out of grasp. That kind of perfectly summed up how I was feeling during it. There’s a piece of the puzzle missing in there. I think future watches will benefit from knowing that now because I won’t be searching and waiting for something that isn’t there.

The main thing I wanted to talk about is the level of controversial this apparently was at the time. I’m kind of baffled by it and I’m curious how the general public actually perceived it. It needed foreign financing to be made, some studios refused to distribute it, there were walkouts during its festival premiere, etc. I love history and movies, I feel like I have pretty solid grasp of the trajectory of them especially in the later half of the 20th century, and I can’t pick out anything especially egregious in this. My modern eyes might just be missing something though.

This is a pretty dark film with some graphic violence and the 90s style of gangster movie hadn’t quite come around yet but this is still 1990 and not 1950. Scarface was 1983 and the 80s overall were not shy with blood soaked violence. I’ve seen lack of a clear moral resolution and romanticization of crime cited but his “Robin Hood” impulses are honestly so underdeveloped and some of him and his crew’s other actions are so psychotic that it doesn’t feel any more pronounced than a lot of other portrayals. He goes out threatening a random civilian woman with a gun and dies from a gunshot wound.

I’m a reader not a writer but I hope I explained my thoughts well enough, I was just really curious about this and I’d love to hear some perspectives. Overall definitely a favorite in the genre now based purely on the vibe and performances. Walken and Fishburne are fantastic in this.

Best ways to clean oxidation + protect metal hardware on clothing?

Got a mint ECWCS gen 1 parka recently and some of the snap buttons and zippers have oxidized a bit over the years, what’s your preferred way for dealing with that and preventing it in the future? Obviously can’t remove them from the jacket so it has to not mess up the fabric.

Got some Mickey Mouses

I love milsurp and I’ve always been fascinated by these. Found a good deal on this unissued 1983 pair recently and snagged them since prices are definitely climbing and they’re getting older and older. They were dusty and grimy but some soapy water and fine steel wool fixed that up. My experience with caring for rubber is basically zero and I wanted to do some preventative maintenance to keep them in great condition so I tried the Gear Aid Revivex stuff. Put a couple applications on and it really seems to liven them up and added a nice shine.

Hefty Food Bags with a 1975 copyright date

Saw this on the counter today and couldn’t believe it, these would’ve had to have survived multiple moves and major downsizing from them. I thought the box would have something else stored in it but all the original bags are still in there

They were out of matching ones so I got some contrasting kilties and I’m really digging it

I assume this leather will also be a bit more durable for this purpose than the fudge nubuck. First pair and I’m loving these

You’re god damn right I’m living in the past

Finished this LBV-88 setup and I mostly got it for collecting reasons but actually have really been enjoying it

When did they actually stop manufacturing ALICE gear?

Got some more ALICE today and I was surprised to see the manufacture date on the mag and first aid pouches is 2005, what was the latest they were still making it and did some components go on longer than others? I’m aware it obviously remained in use in various ways for a long time after MOLLE adoption but I figured production of new stuff would’ve stopped by then

Finished my new ALICE pack

Found some new old stock of the last gen of ALICE so I figured I should finally get one before they become really hard to find. Did the standard buckle mod, got a horizontal compression strap, wove a carry handle and added a USMC assault pouch to the lid and two quart canteens to the sides. That MOLLE II kidney pad was $6 for an unused one so I’m gonna give that a shot before dropping the cash on the Tactical Tailor stuff.

Only thing I can’t figure out is the whole pack seems to be a little shorter than average because the bottom straps for attaching it to the frame are sitting too high to interface well with the intended cut outs on the frame. I just looped them around it above them though which I think will be fine.

Were people issued the LBV-88 typically using it to carry 12 mags in total or did they forgo the belt mag pouches/use them for something else?
