If the main character of a book is deeply flawed, are they still the protagonist?

In the genre of lit that I like, “weird girl lit,” the main character is often a woman with some sort of emotional, dark, unhinged, even violent behavior.

It makes me wonder whether she is still the protagonist? Is she also the antagonist at the same time? Or are all of the people opposing her throughout the story, her antagonists? (Even if those people are good people).

I learned in school that protagonist is good/hero and antagonist is bad/villains so now my head is in a scramble 😆

I’m just a reader, but Reddit suggested I ask here.

Just started First Blade as a non fantasy reader

Typically I read weird girl lit (dark, emotional, unhinged female mc ie mental health), dabbled in some historical fiction, horror and sci fi.

I have tried some fantasy stories but typically get overwhelmed by the world and character creation. Have never read a fantasy series besides Harry Potter. But I really want to.

I stumbled across Devils on good reads, a friend saved it, and was so in love with the cover art I started to do some digging. I decided to start from the beginning with Blade Itself.

I really like it so far!! It’s dark yet funny. I’m only around page 50 but I feel very invested in what’s going to happen and how it’s all related. I’ve enjoyed tv shows and movies like this. It doesn’t feel too overwhelming, I just try to focus more on all the names and titles and creatures. Reread if I have to. The descriptions are beautiful and of perfect length to me. I finish a sentence often just like wow that was so well articulated.

Tips for a new fantasy reader? Do you ever write down some notes so you don’t forget? Are there any women characters?

Edit. Meant First Law / Blade Itself in title

Ladybug swarm atop Green Mountain 🐞

I am arriving to the top yesterday, up those rocks almost to the top and I notice tons of bugs swarming around. At first I think bees (last time I got to the top of the 1/2 flat iron earlier this year, a massive bee swarm flew by going west) but then I notice they are ladybugs.
They were everywhere. It is clearly mating season because there are hundreds of thousands ladies up there right now. Video doesn’t really do it justice but I’ll post more content in the comments. It was really cool!!!! But very distracting, I couldn’t stay long they were landing all over me. You should definitely hike up if you love ladybugs.
Does anyone else know about this specifically at the top of Green mtn? Common occurrence? Other hikers were also in shock.

Is it weird?

I saved this on my list and my list typically consists of literary, dark, emotional, weird, sometimes romantic, sometimes horror. I’m not sure how this one got on there, 1 hour ish into audio it’s seeming just like a romance. No weird vibes. I don’t hate it but it’s not gripping me yet. What did you think?

I almost got scammed for $1500, even drove to take out the money but then I realized.

I 32(F) figured I would share this story that happened to me a couple years ago to avoid it happening to anyone else. So I was at work in my office around 3ish, Boss and lots of people were out in meetings and I got a call to my cell from unknown number. I pick it up and a man says he works for the municipal police dept. tells me I missed jury duty and I am in trouble. He is not nice his demeanor is aggressive. I think oh shoot there’s a pile of mail I need to open, I just have messed up? He tells me I need to drive downtown to the judicial center to pay a fine. I have done jury duty there in the past so I have been there. He tells me they are going to stay on the phone with me to track my whereabouts. I feel all flustered and confused and don’t want to be in trouble so I headed out. There was also commotion on the line I could hear in background, it sounded like it could be a police station.
So I get in the car and he literally is asking me my gas mileage number so he can tell if I’m driving. It is my intention to go to the station downtown. But then he tells me I need a money order. So I pull into the grocery store chain where he said I could get one. So I’m in the store and just shaking like what is going on. He continues over and over like brain washing me of this whole story where I’m in trouble. I walk over to the money order machine and he says “ok you need to send $1500 in the following, I’m going to spell it out…E….T…H….” And I’m like wait a second this man is literally trying to get me to send crypto to him. I immediate was full stop yup this entire thing was a scam. I feel so stupid. I just hang up and he calls back and I block it.
It’s so interesting because I’m a pretty sharp person but I think the lie on lie compounded over time, I just didn’t realize it. I searched the number on google and it was an Atlanta area code (I live in Mountain west) but actually assigned to a non profit there… like it had a location and website and looked legit. I found the nonprofits Instagram and other people were commenting “hey your number is being used for a scam ring” so I see I wasn’t alone.
Anyway I’m just happy they didn’t get me in the end and I SPENT OVER AN HOUR TALKING TO THEM SO AT LEAST I WASTED THEIR TIME!

Disgusting conditions on my flight last night.

I thought at least an attempt at clean conditions was something I could expect. Unacceptable.

Just hiked out yesterday! And it was so fun spotting scorpions. There weren’t any right at our campsite. I walked along the path at night and ended up spotting 4 total. They’re pretty small but with the light they glow so much so it’s pretty easy. Also feel free to AMA since I just left yesterday. For example, I didn’t filter the fern springs water at all and tummy was totally fine. Definitely bring TP as the bathroom ran out.
