Extremely versatile rimfire holster review: Cole-Tac Varmint Wrangler Chest Rig

I'm not affiliated with Cole-Tac in any way, but was extremely impressed this weekend with their holster!

I had it out on a multi-day hike, mostly for plinking and some racoon management. I posted about this setup a bit back, but wanted to update after actually using it. I added a small round Molle pouch I normally pocket carry for extra rounds to the holster. This acts both as a counter-balance when carrying the chest rig, but also holds extra rounds and some batteries/tools for the gun.

I didn't think through carrying a pack with the extra rounds on my back, but found out that without even adjusting the strap length I can carry this holster on my waist and somehow it's even more comfortable than a standard belt holster! It's like a cowboy carry with an ammo belt. I added 2 velcro strip keepers to keep the shoulder strap in line.

With the ammo in the gun/spare mag and the carrier I have about 200 rounds on the belt total, as well as an extra red dot battery, and all the tools I need to adjust the laser and Holosun as well as tighten the red dot if it ever came loose.

The extra pouch may not be needed (I have 40 rounds in the 2 mags) but it allows for some impromptu target practice.

Overall Impression: One of the best holsters purchases I've made. I'd love to see Cole-Tac do a version with a removable shoulder strap (this one is sewn on) but it's so unobtrusive that I doubt I'd upgrade if they ever did. My Ruger MkIII fits great in the holster as well. They did a great job of making the holster secure while still multiple rimfire pistols!

After 2 decades I have found the perfect “kit gun” setup!

I backpack, hunt, fish, and explore a lot. I don’t do a ton of prepping as far as storage (we have 3 months we cycle through) but appreciate some of the aspects of this community. One concept is the kit gun. More of an instantaneous prep.

I‘ve had different versions of this since 2000 and this version is my favorite by a mile. It started as my backpacking raccoon rig but is now my cabin carry.

It startled with wanting a higher capacity 22lr. I had a Ruger MkIII but switched to this Sig P322. Red dot, OCL Titanium suppressor, and a laser/light make it great for anything out to 40 yards day or night. The Cole-Tac chest rig was the real gem. It can be worn on the chest as designed, but I found you can carry it on the waist and it really excels at that. I added a “Mole can case” pouch which carries about 160 rounds of 22lr, extra red dot batteries, tools, and a lens wipe and acts as a counter weight when carrying as a cheat rig.

All in I have 40 rounds in mags, 200 rounds total. total package weight is about 3.5 lbs.

Love it! Thought I’d share.

Sig P322 is an awesome pistol that got a bad rap... Also Cole-Tac Varmint Wrangler Holster Review.

I have a thing for small game 22 pistols. I have a Ruger 22/45 Lite set up in a similar fashion to this one but wanted something with a rail to put a cheap laser/light on.

This is a backpacking gun, so weight is critical. I'm at 2 Lbs, 5 ozs with everything shown (holster, light, optic, suppressor, and 2 mags with 40 rounds). This is a shockingly light package!!!

I was going to get a Taurus TX22 (and still may) but they are perpetually out of stock, so on the third visit to the gun shop where they "just sold the last one they had listed as in-stock", I picked up the Sig P322. I only have 200 rounds through it, but it's been 100% reliable (Federal AutoMatch), silences great, and seems to be close in accuracy (1.5" at 20 yards) to my Ruger MkIII with bulk ammo, which is surprising because the optic is mounted to the slide. I'm going to do a more in depth ammo and accuracy range day in a week or so to really see what it can do.

The Sig P322 with it's capacity, direct red dot mount, decent trigger, rail, and general quality is an awesome pistol. I'm very glad I went with it and plan to put 1000 rounds through it before Fall.

I put a cheap Amazon light/laser combo on this and actually love the thing! It's ultralight, the laser is super bright, and the light is bright enough for racoons at 30 yards! USB-C charging and about $20. I need to see how well the laser retains zero but so far I love this setup.

The Cole-Tac Varmint Wrangler holster is a bit tight for this setup (mostly on the can) but in a really good way. I wouldn't want to go any bigger on my setup, but the snug retention is great for a chest rig. The gun carries like a dream, the spare mag fits perfectly, and the chest holster strap can be wrapped around the holster and clipped to form a nice packable package. For my use (keep it in my backpack until the racoons come out at night) it's darn perfect! They even have an option for with/without weaponlights. The cheap light I have on there is about the biggest I'd want to go with this system. I wouldn't want to carry a gun without a safety in this soft of a holster, but so far it seems to have the perfect balance of being light/flexible and actually protecting the pistol/trigger.

Smallest (decently accurate) 22 pistol that takes a red dot and can?

I already have full size 22 pistols (MkIII's, revolvers, Chargers, etc).

This is mostly a debate between the Taurus TX22 Compact and KelTec P17.

I am looking for a compact 22 pistol that can mount a red dot and is factory threaded to bring hiking during small game season. A modern kit gun if you will.

I hesitate to get the Ruger MkIV Shh, as I already have a MkIII Lite 22/45 so I would only be saving about 2" in length.

The TX 22 compact is almost the exact size of the Keltec P17 yet the P17 has 4 more rounds in the mag.

The Berretta 20x is kind of a joke but I keep thinking about it. Can't take a red dot from the factory, but there are decent aftermarket mounts.

Anyone have the Burris BTH19 (400x300, 1.8x) monocular?

My use case is small game spotting (racoon, squirrel, etc), deer tracking, and having fun while hiking. Maybe some use for security at my cabin. No long range coyote hunting at this time and would go with a higher end scope for that and use this as a spotter.

I was all set on getting the Wix Pocket V3 for $800, but saw the Burris BTH19 for $680. It uses an 18650 and has a higher resolution than the Wix. Any reason I shouldn't go with the Burris?

Looking for a handheld thermal monocular that takes 18650 batteries.

I have consolidated my flashlights and charging system to 18650 batteries. I’m looking to get a sub-$1000 (ideally $600-$700) handheld thermal mostly for fun while hiking and camping. We do a decent amount of raccoon management with silenced 22 pistols and VERY bright flashlights and was hoping for a cheapish thermal that could spot (no need to identify) animals at 100 yards. All of our shots are at 20-30 yard’s so we will identify at that point.

Any guesses on what caused this trailer tire failure?

NOT MY TRAILER! This is a friends trailer. Were wondering what went wrong the failure has a lot of horizontal cuts from sidewall to sidewall

The tires probably were old (original to when she bought it) and possibly under inflated, but it looks like the brakes may have locked up? They were towing for the first time with a new TV (they’ve had the camper for 5ish years).

Is this my AC Evaporative temp sensor and can I replace it (2019 Escape)?

I think my sensor is bad. AC only works when ambient temp is below 75°.

On the forums they say this part is easy to replace, but they show a blue sensor, mine is white and made from silicone.

Can I just pull the white plug out and put a new on in or is it attached to the evaporator internally?

2019 Escape: AC works 10% of the time, High pressure, clutch turns on/off constantly. Pressure switch or compressor?

I have a 2019 Ford Escape 1.5L with 41k miles.

The AC has been working intermittently, now it's down to about 10% of the time. Most of the time it blows hot air.

Compressor comes on for 1 second then goes off for 5-10 seconds. It does this repeatedly. Relay clicks when clutch turns on/off.

Low pressure line measures 65PSI with the compressor off and 80PSI with the compressor on.

Am I looking at a pressure switch (and where the heck is it?) or a new compressor?

Does anyone else regret getting the B&T Tiger22 Ti because it's sealed?

This was my first 22 can and let me start by saying it's amazing in weight and performance! I've used it for a year and put probably 2000 rounds through it, but man is it hard to get clean! Cleaned it 4 times in those 2000 rounds, about every 500 rounds.

I use Breakthrough and it gets a ton of gunk out, but doesn't seem to touch the blasted on lead. I have done 72 hour soaks, wire brushes, picking at the lead from each end, and even blasted a torch down the bore to melt some of the lead chunks off (this actually works and balls them up for removal).

It seems there is lead building up in the baffles and other places I cannot reach slowly but surely. I'm within about 10 grams of my purchased weight but it gets louder much faster now than when it was new and I fear soon I'll have to be cleaning it every 100 rounds or so.

I shoot mostly Federal Automatch through it (with a bit of CCI Standard Velocity) from my Ruger MkIII and a couple of 22lr rifles.

I have a OCL Titanium 22 on the way and will probably leave the Tiger22 on a hunting rifle from now on.

Does the new 711L ratchet fit Leatherman bits retain flat bits better than the original 711L ratchet?

I have the original 711L ratchet (with the 1/4” magnetic hex in the handle) that I love. It doesn’t work great with flat Leatherman bits though as they aren’t retained, they just fall out.

Does the new ratchet work with flat bits better? I love the form factor of the original but will upgrade if the new one actually holds flat bits.

Does anyone make a lightweight privacy tent (shower/bathroom)?

My wife and I have backpacked since we were teenagers. I’ve been more hardcore, almost ultralight at times, but we both love the part at camp together.

We’ve started bringing our kids (girls) and camping with other families and a portable toilet and privacy tent has shown up at our camps. I hate it but it appears it’s here to stay.

Our current tent is similar to the picture. It packs up into a big circle. Does anyone make a smaller packing version?

Kelty and Bass Pro make ones with standard tent poles, but they’re both steel poles and over 10 pounds…

Pike Arms vs Acculite 8" Lightweight Charger Barrel

I'm chasing some flier issues with my Charger and the next step is a decent barrel. I'm not looking for 1/2" MOA accuracy with this guy, but after trying 5 types of ammo I tend to get a 10-shot 1" group at 50 yards with 1 or 2 fliers about 2" away. I'd love a 2 MOA gun with no fliers.

I'm looking for a lightweight option and trying to decide between the Pike Arms and Acculite 8" aluminum shrouded options. I like everything about the Acculite except the carbon steel barrel. I really want a stainless barrel on this gun as it is out in the elements a lot and any 22 with a can really benefits from a stainless barrel!

Anyone have the Pike barrel that can confirm it's accuracy potential?

Brother (44M) has bullied me (42m) my entire life. Family sees him as the prodigal son but he's the biggest loser. How do I not let him affect me anymore?

My oldest brother has always had issues. He was the first grandchild born into what would become a huge family (up to 60 cousins and kids now under my grandparents). He would beat up, berate, and generally bully my younger brother and I growing up. He got into smoking at 16, then drinking, then drug use before he was 20. He joined the army, went on lifetime disability after a tour (he found out he could claim PTSD after seeing a buddy do it and most of his squad shared the symptoms he would need to say he had to get disability) and never worked a day in his life. I'm not saying he doesn't have issues from his service, but he went into the army an addict and was pretty open with us at the time that he was seeking full time disability by saying the right things.

His biggest vice is alcohol, he has many DUI's to the point of getting a felony and has claimed many times to be sober (though he smokes weed and uses other stuff on occasion he thinks if he doesn't drink he's sober). He burns through relationships like firewood, had a baby with a one-night stand, and for decades squandered his life away getting into fights, stirring up drama, and somehow getting everyone to blame everything but himself for the situations he got himself into. My parents have ALWAYS worked their hardest to eliminate the consequences of his actions. When he would get into fights at school they would go down there and say it was the other kid without seeing anything. At home he would rarely get blamed for beating us up as he always did it out of sight. As an adult they drove him everywhere after he lost his license and basically became the parents of his child when he had custody.

The physical bullying as a child turned into verbal and relationship bullying as we grew up. I have been quite successful in life, I have a great job, make enough to be comfortable, have an awesome wife and kids. He is clearly jealous and has turned my parents against me and uses any opportunity he can to start fights with me. He has bullied my kids and wife in the past when they did anything he disagreed with (shouting at my wife, lying about my wife, lying about what my kids did when his kid was wrong, etc). My parents really took his side when there was a huge incident at a family gather a few years ago and I have been mostly no-contact with my brother and parents since. He finds a way into everything to bemoan me to my friends and family, write a jab about me, or in general be a bully. I've blocked him on everything and don't see most of what he writes/says but a lot of it still makes it back to me.

My sister has always been on his side like my parents. My older brother has largely divided my immediate family (parents and siblings). They are always hoping the latest bout of sobriety will last longer than a few months and give him the benefit of the doubt in every situation. We've been to family therapy over it and I was told my parents have some deep-seated issues with thinking that they are a failure if they admit their first child is a failure, so they lie and cover for all his consequences to prevent him from appearing to be a failure to others and lie to themselves about what he is.

The issue is that by being no-contact with them I largely do not see any of my family anymore. I was extremely close with all of them and now can only see some of them outside of the normal family gatherings. I've talked about the issues with several of them and everyone seems to see that his is a bully and a problem but he goes to all family events and since I have chosen to distance myself from him they are sad I'm not around but on the few occasions they decided not to invite him to something he has made a huge deal about it and caused huge issues so they don't say anything to him when he goes which prevents me from attending anything.

The bullying for the last 30 years has mostly been verbal, and I know "words can never hurt me" but yet he lives in my head and the hurt he wants to cause me I allow to affect me. I've tried hard to "live the better life" and not hate him and not show that he hurts me, but I'm at the point where I do hate him and his harm hurts a lot. How do I move past this guy, go to events where he is at, and not let this idiot bully me anymore?

Does anyone make a 16x scope with a 36mm objective?

We Weird use case here: I like 32mm to 36mm ultralight scopes for hunting rifles mounted in 1” low rings. they usually max out at 8x power. I’m looking for a small objective, high zoom (or fixed power) scope for load development that will fit in the low rings on all my hunting rifles.

I know exit pupil and light transmission will suffer, but I’m only using it from a bench in the middle of the day.

Quality doesn’t matter terribly, as long as it holds zero.

Just how much were those people shooting that had 22 cans completely full of lead?

I got my first suppressor about 6 years ago. been using them heavily on AR’s and 9mm sub guns since. About 6000 centerfire rounds. Haven’t cleaned any of them and it appears I don’t have to any time soon.

Got into Rimfire cans about a year ago with a B&T Print Tiger. I’ve put about 2000 rounds through it. All CCI standard and Fed Automatch

My Tiger gained 7 grams over that time (112g to 119g). Did a soak and it’s back down to 114g.

I used to see pictures of 22 cans with ounces of buildup in them (I’m guessing 100 grams+). Has our ammo gotten that much cleaner or were they shooting tens of thousands of rounds between cleanings?

Convoy C8+ with 10 Amp driver and 5000k SFT-42r. WOW!

This light is amazing! The reflector is perfect with it. On a white wall it had a bit of a doughnut hole but it's perfect outside! A nice huge even hotspot. The hotspot is so big it deceives you that's it's not as bright as it is. I have a lot of single battery "pocket throwers" up to SBT90's and none of them have a hotspot like this, the pictures don't do it justice.

The spill is crazy too. This LED simply has it all. I regret all of my SFT-40 lights which I went all out on when it came out in 5000k.

Also, I've never used mode 6 on Convoy's 12-mode driver. It's absolutely perfect on a dedicated thrower with memory turned off. You have high the 90% of the time you want it but put it against your shirt and you have a decent low mode for seeing up close. It's almost Anduril useful (not quite, but close).

AB A10 7.62 on a 5.56: What a fantastic can, quiet with very little gas!

I got this can primarily for use on a 308 bolt action but thought I'd throw it on my 16" lightweight winter AR (pencil barrel, all plastic furniture). I would say it performs better than my OCL Polo K 5.56!  It’s got great tone, easily hearing safe on a 16” barrel and almost no gas.  I shoot most of my cans without ears when I first get them to understand the sound level.  Most are a shot or two then I put the ears back on.  With the A10 I was comfortable with a full mag.  It felt quieter than a 20” 22lr rifle.

What a cool can for so little money.  It’s a 6”, 12oz so not ultralight but feels right at home on this AR.

Shockingly it also seems to tune up my old (down to my last case) steel Tula ammo. This stuff is normally 5-6 MOA and I got a nice 3.5moa group (10 shots) at my range today.
