My new user question on downloads: download icon seems inactive and greyed out

Hello and my first question for annas. I've registered and logged in with the keyword which was accepted. My search was found but the download icon is greyed out. But this is real progress in finding the materials I've sought out for a long time. What do I need to know yet?

Portable Emergency radios with AA batteries

This is my chance to rant on You tube radio reviewers. My head is spinning with the ' if you like this... or maybe you want that' blah blah blah-- nothing seems to be a trustworthy source or winds up as technobabble. THEN I looked at Ebay. My question on that is what accounts for the number of open box items? IOW people are returning these things one after another for who knows what reason they didn't think of on purchase.

My subject line is what I consider most important: easily swappable AA batteries from my rechargeable AA supply when, if everything goes dark like it did here two weeks ago after a tornado, it doesn't have to plugged into something else to recharge.

The reviewers also said in one instance that commercial stations will be on air for that emergency news being handed to them from all the other sources (with proper backups etc.) So maybe I'm fishing in the wrong lake.

How long has Annas been a reddit

Thanks to all for Anna's Archive. I just recently became aware of it and was gratified to learn that its inspiration was Aaron Schwartz. When he captured a large trove of material, a magazine of interest called The Drama Review was taken down with everything else. Can someone give a brief explanation of how to download when content is found. And, as the subject line says, how long has reddit had r/Annas_Archive?

An inexpensive 4 side (like Harbor Freight) sharpening block for lapping a stone?

I have used very simple sharpening gear just for kitchen and chef knife and I asked about sharpening stones earlier. To keep a stone flat, will a fresh 4 sided block ($13.00) work in its fine grit (or coarse grit)?

My Oreck XL won't stay standing, what part of the shaft/swivel does that ?

I got a used Oreck XL and everything works fine save for the fact that it takes just a bit of gravity or nudge to have the handle drop and have to bend over repeatedly to stand it straight. On the other Oreck XL I have something clicks when it is standing straight to keep it upright. Has anyone seen this problem?

Raddy 886 and other weather radios

Seeking advice on a best option for battery powered radio to monitor severe weather other than weather band. I've seen recommendation for the Raddy 886 but even ordering seems to lead to either Euro sites or possible hacks.

What is the advice here for those severe weather situations such as tornado that just hit Menasha , WI US

Battery operation is key but I don't understand what bluetooth can provide someone like me with only desktop PC.

Has anyone followed the severe weather on Short Wave

I was wondering who and how to follow emergencies like this via a battery short wave radio in the Fox Valley. There's r/shortwave and I've followed that a bit without any gear or knowing how to tune in local operators. Plus I'm in an apartment and so there's lots of antenna limitations. I've put off getting some sort of emergency radio. It's time to get something.

WE notifications... during the outage is there a line to call for automated messages?

I was grateful and relieved when I got the WE auto message that things were coming back on and the worst case was 10 pm. It came on here not long after the auto message though.

I don't know really where or who to ask if there is a toll free number to call for updates and progress reports. Frankly, this one got to me and made me anxious. I only have desktop PC and landline phone. So my question is about calling WE.

This is a small thing but ... where's the TP?

I'm going to rewatch DD all the way through but on viewing it there's a scene where they remove themselves to a bathroom for privacy. In the background there's a TP holder that's empty. I looked like a flub to me.

Save the date: Safety and Licensing committee meeting tomorrow July 22, 5:30pm

Activists in the Stop FLOCK movement have a chance to once again present comment on the agenda topic of the FLOCK resolution. There was a big turnout last week. The goal of this message is to get those concerned about this and other community issues to begin following city actions. It's easier than ever with video streaming accessible.

Here once again is a weekly schedule:

YSK: Use your battery recharger before first use of AA AAA battery purchases

Why YSK: Today I got a new pack of rechargeable common AAA batteries. I had not used the recharger on fresh batteries from the store previously. Now all four are charging. So for a full charge, take this step before installing in flashlights etc.

Open office hours for Appleton Mayor Woodford

A followup on those open office hours for the mayor I mentioned earlier. Here is the link to the schedule which is posted at the Mayor's heading on Appletonwi.org.

https://www.appletonwi.gov/government/mayor/office_hours.php

These meetings are scheduled outdoors at neighborhood parks during the summer. And it is more formal than I described: a chat with mayor Woodford has to be scheduled and runs about 10 mins. Contact information is contained in the linked page. One is upcoming on July 21st.

The time I was doing chats with the mayor my topic was vehicle noise when mayor Hanna was in office.

FLOCK future actions still not determined.

https://cityofappleton.granicus.com/player/clip/5400?view_id=3&redirect=true

That's the whole meeting for quick access from your browser. And while I do not know how The Post Crescent is covering it, I had the tall guy next to me take a head count of attendees. The overflow crowd was between 75 and 85 with a few comings and goings. Of the the total I think well over 3/4 were there for the ALPR resolutions and determinations plus those active on a school board issue on truancy. Thanks to all who came. The next opportunity for public participation on the FLOCK subject is next Wednesday July 22 at 5:30 pm for the committee meeting to which the resolution was referred back.

But today, here on Reddit, I'd like to know how many came to the meeting from these Reddit updates and also elsewhere ?

Reminder: Appleton Council meeting tonight at 7 pm

The earlier announcement said

" The Appleton City Council is voting on a resolution next this week that could pave the way for Flock or Axon's ALPR tech to come back to our town with no new protections."

To my knowledge the smoke weather conditions have not altered the time and place. It will make it difficult though for some like me but I'm intending to go if for not the whole session.
