YSK the safe way to clean a 20 in. box fan

Why YSK: After seasons of use, 20 inch box fans get built up dirt on the blades. Sometimes the blades need to removed for the best cleaning or even repair of cracks. I just used a new method for getting the blade off. Rather than trying to pull it off of the motor shaft, I removed the grilles and blocked up just two sides of the metal frame clear of the blade edges and used some smaller blocks to _push_down on the plastic fan blade center. This is much safer than a technique shown on youtube by standing on the frame on the floor and trying to get leverage.

ICE activity in Milwaukee (from The Wisconsin Examiner 04/01)

Just a note that it's not over until it's over. Keep your neighbors safe where you can. Specifically the article from the Examiner linked below says that ICE has used public parks as staging areas and other actions.
This is not to alarm anyone. Just to be aware. The article suggests that this new ICE activity is happening due to being close to election season.

PS2 keyboard (white) wanted

I have several old PS2 keyboards. Kept them clean but they are worn out and stick and are missing strokes. It's the membrane style and I'm on a Microsoft just now. I prefer quiet non clicky but positive keystroke-- not the very modern flat style.

What is available as a replacement. Modding and all that I have no experience of but would consider any tips to revive my membrane keyboards.

Thanks to those who came out to the FLOCK meeting at city council committee 6/24

I would shake hands with all who spoke at the Safety and Licensing meeting on FLOCK as announced on the Reddit if I had stayed until the end. For someone older the hard plastic and sculptured seating was painful after only a short period. But I did stay for an hour and half. Those who spoke will, I believe, be a part of the record. Discussion on this is good and there is more to come if for no other reason than more people get involved in city government.

Tips for preparing a hard press of a pant seam taper

I've been slowly practicing hand sewing on a pair of trousers to make a taper. The seam cutaway has to be pressed out. After all the thread ripping is there anything special to prepare the fabric to get it flat? I don't have a clapper aside from some bare wood cutoffs which are pretty narrow. I made a trouser pressing ironing board like that for sleeves with odds and ends I have that has some batting and a felt layer top.

'San Diego’s AI Battlefield Heats Up' from The Nation magazine May 2026

https://www.thenation.com/article/society/ai-surveillance-san-diego/

This is a long form report on the use of FLOCK and Ubicquia in San Diego but also mentions places like Verona, WI. It has implications for everywhere that the FLOCK and an associated company called Ubicquia which manufactures smart streetlights are used. It's the first I heard of that one. The article also gets into the difficulties of forming citizen watchdog advisory groups ( which have been suggested locally) and resistance from the police.

Publication Day (06/02) : A Resistance History of the United States by Tad Stoermer

This is a followup to the What Do We Do Now post just below at r/Appleton. Tad Stoermer surfaced on Youtube a few months ago and I've followed his clips on political history and current commentary since then.

On publication day of "A Resistance History of the United States" he has this to say today:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VYcTpfOVEDA

A long discussion can follow from any of his short commentaries. Stoermer is professor at Johns Hopkins and the University of Southern Denmark where he now lives. His CV is long and includes military service and government service (I think it was the National Archive and Colonial Williamsburg) as well as for political campaigns.

The Appleton Library has the book which I asked for. It should be on the shelf shortly. Will it live up to the hype? I have no idea but Stoermer's take on American history will be an eye-opener to anyone.

Ex-Trump attorney Troupis seeks $3.2 million from ‘anti-weaponization’ fund -from Wisconsin Examiner 5-28

https://wisconsinexaminer.com/2026/05/27/ex-trump-attorney-troupis-seeks-3-2-million-from-trump-slush-fund/?utm_source=newsletters.wisconsinexaminer.com&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=fake-electors-architect-seeks-payout

The story concerns efforts in Wisconsin to claw back any possible payouts. I just don't know how much attention that aspect of the story is getting.

A brief quote here:

"Wisconsin Senate Minority Leader Diane Hesselbein (D-Middleton) responded to the fund Wednesday by introducing the “No Taxpayer Dollars for Insurrectionists Act” which would apply a 100% state income tax on any money Wisconsinites receive through the fund. She said the fund was the “height of corruption.”

YSK : A little heat will bring back digital timers that appear to have gone dead

Why YSK. If you have discarded one or more digital timers run on an AA battery, they may just need to be put on a warm surface like a hot water pipe. Overnight, they can revive as the heat removes moisture.

Ok to freeze tuna salad ?

I made a larger amount of the usual tuna salad than could be eaten for one meal. Is there food breakdown in freezing the ingredients in a tuna salad including things like black olives?

Best chewy molasses cookie recipe

I've been using the Cooks Illustrated recipe for some time when not just buying store cookies that taste like sugar cookies with a 'hint' of molasses. So is anybody making a chewy molasses cookie that's more molassesy?

My community recently had a push to take down FLOCK which was, according to the mayor, successful and he had committed to terminate the contact etc. But we know that large stores have their own FLOCK cameras. So how effective is it to just have cities take down their FLOCK systems? Are there agreements for shared use which would make the civic removals inconsequential?

Hello,

I've resubscribed because some other reddits listed for budget kitchen or other related topics seem to have gone stale.

My edges are very primitive so I just want to start with a whetstone on a matte-- nothing else though I do like the cradle systems. After using some of the diamond block systems I should be able to do my Victorinox 12 inch and a couple others with 1000 grit.

The early birds at the clerk's office have posted the agenda for Common Council May 6th this morning (Sunday.) It may be their usual practice. The Rank Choice voting resolution is on the agenda as having come out of committee.

The Agenda is at:

https://cityofappleton.legistar.com/Calendar.aspx

Use download PDF to read the agenda.

As of this writing and shown in the agenda (at page 6) Safety and Licensing has marked this for denial/ disapproval. Reasons or their discussion is not given and it is marked "Held" for the council. I do not know what that means.

Not a beauty question here, I just want help sorting all that is found on google searches on this. I'm wondering what over the counter product is best for yellowy dead skin build-up on legs and application for occasional use.

https://wisconsinexaminer.com/briefs/wisconsin-doj-ordered-to-release-database-of-cops/?

I thought this was a significant story to add to other discussions about police activity on this reddit.

This quote is from the end of the piece which refutes certain privacy claims made in withholding such info:

“Government officials must do more than merely claim that, hypothetically, something bad might happen if the records are released. Rather, they must show that harm is likely to occur and is sufficiently serious to overcome the presumption of access to government records. DOJ could not do that here.”

I think this is a pretty neutral question and only mildly political. Does anyone know where The Wied Wire is if it still exists or if it was taken down, why ? The Most I can get out of search is a government site as is normal for any of them. Just no Wied Wire.
