Ideas for non-traditional Luanti/mintest?

Most people think of Luanti as a free minecraft with Mods. However, its my understanding that its completely programmable with in the co-text of a Voxel engine.

What are some of the best non traditional uses for it?

So basic Ideas I have so far are

  • RPG with storylines
  • Escape-room.
  • Large mazes
  • Basic Educational simulator.

I would love to hear your ideas!

Am I overlooking something?

I’ve been thinking through how I want to organize services on Proxmox for my homelab, and I think I’ve settled on a hybrid approach. Please let me know if I am overlooking something.

Use a few VMs as major isolation/failure boundaries, then run multiple Docker containers inside each VM.

Example:

Proxmox
├── apps-01
│ ├── Homarr
│ ├── Linkwarden
│ ├── Mealie
│ └── Audiobookshelf
│
├── games-01
│ ├── Luanti
│ ├── Minecraft
│ └── other game servers
│
├── media-01
│ ├── Jellyfin
│ └── Immich
│
└── security/testing VMs as needed

My reasoning:

  • A VM per application seems wasteful.
  • Docker containers are lightweight and easy to group by purpose.
  • VMs give stronger isolation than LXCs because each VM has its own kernel.
  • If one VM gets overloaded, crashes, or has a bad configuration, it should be easier to contain the problem to that VM.
  • CPU and RAM can be capped at the VM level to help prevent one workload from consuming the whole node.
  • Related containers can all be backed up together with a Proxmox VM backup.
  • Restoring the VM restores the OS, Docker installation, Compose files, local volumes, and configs together.
  • Large persistent data can still live on TrueNAS and be protected separately with snapshots/backups.

So the basic philosophy is:

Containers separate applications.
VMs separate major functions and failure domains.

It seems like a good middle ground between running dozens of individual VMs/LXCs and putting the entire homelab inside one giant Docker VM.

Org roam vs org link?

I have been using org-insert-link to link my notes and files. I have org roam but its my understanding that they are two different things? is it just that org-roam indexes with SQL that makes the difference

Progress over perfection

I am reaching a point that I am not sure if its good, but it feels better. Basically I have been breaking even but stabilizing my P&Ls. I would have huge up downs and down days. The down days would blowup my account.

Here is my thought and would love to hear any feed back from others journey. I believe dialing in my rules and having less emotional reactions is putting me in a place where I can be consistently profitable because I can only improve on my system if I actually follow my system.

This is my hope, but maybe I would be just as well off and do a lot less work if I just throw darts at a dart board

Magit Ricing?

https://preview.redd.it/t1owu3yvkmjh1.png?width=960&format=png&auto=webp&s=964ad55723027161f445a31b989f566add32f394

I’m really starting to like Magit from a functionality standpoint, but I hate to say it—it’s ugly. It’s probably the better choice for me practically, especially since I’m already using Emacs, but I really like the way Lazygit looks and feels.

What I especially like about Lazygit is the panel-based layout. Files, branches, commits, diffs, etc. are visually separated into their own areas, which makes the interface feel much cleaner and easier to scan than having everything in one continuous buffer.

Has anyone riced or customized Magit to get closer to that kind of look? I’m not necessarily trying to recreate Lazygit exactly, but I’d love stronger visual separation between sections and more of that clean, organized panel/dashboard feel.

Proxmox as a learning lab?

Something I was just thinking about the other day. Can proxmox be the ultimate learning lab? I was wanting to learn how to build and tinker with things in a safe environment.

My thoughts was to build learn delete and rebuild things like truenas, opnsense, automation and even micro controllers like a virtual esp32 or even have a nested proxmox to learn on.

Are all these things possible?

Bread and Butter

I've been working on improving my day trading and wanted to hear from people who are consistently profitable.

Not looking for trade alerts or "buy this, sell that." I'm more interested in how experienced traders actually think.

A few things I'm curious about:

  • What do you think gives you your edge?
  • How do you decide if it's even worth trading that day?
  • What makes you sit on your hands instead of forcing a trade?
  • What's your process before entering a position?
  • How do you know when to take profits instead of hoping for more?
  • What's one risk management rule you'll never break?
  • Looking back, what mistake held you back the longest?
  • If you had to start over today, what would you focus on learning first?

I'd really appreciate hearing what's worked for you (and what hasn't). Sometimes the biggest lessons come from the mistakes.

Long-term Emergency fund goal amount.

I have about 10% of my income go to my emergency fund a month.

What are most of you doing for your Emergency fund goal amount long term? I have hit the six month of expenses. Do I keep adding to it or just keep that amount? if I keep adding should I do it forever or should I stop at some point?

Is solder paste “superior”

I keep trying to solder with an iron. (BTW did my first successful drag solder on an IC 😄 ) but the more I get into it the more it seems that solder paste with a heat gun just works really well and unless you have components close by or ones that are sensitive to heat. you are almost always better with the paste.

If this is true makes me kinda sad, I find great pride and accomplishment with using an iron, but if its objectively not as good I will switch.

Soldering kits with instructions

I have bought 3 different soldering kits to try and learn. The problem is I can't find any diagrams or instructions for them. I would like something that shows where things go and what techniques to use for each component

How to solder tiny connections?

TLDR, been trying to solder this button on my SteamDeck. I even got a 0.2 mm head for it. Now the issue is not getting solder to melt correctly. I use a chisel tip where I can but these are too small. Do I need something like a heating plate or another technique?

The vicious cycle

A pattern I have noticed is that I am actually pretty good at trading, I will have a lot of good wins, but every time I dont bring my A game or get in my head I lose weeks worth of gains in a single day.

Curious if anyone else has noticed this or does it feel more like flipping a coin for you?

Where is the AI and algo trading? yes they exist, but a year or two ago everyone was acting like the retail trader was doomed because of it. I haven't really seen that much has changed in that time so why hasn't it taken over?

Rules for getting out when things go your way

My irony is that I typically only lose money and large amounts of it when things are going my way.

This morning I was way up with my first trade. I thought to myself, the market's going to go against you get out while you're ahead of your daily average anyway.

But the other part of me that I knew was lying was saying just stick with the momentum.

What have you found are the best strategies to not give it all back and then some

Is perfection the enemy of profitable trading?

I have actually been overall consistently profitable with daytrading lately. The only real change? I gave up on perfection. I get out of losing trades. I take profits but always leave money on the table.

Seems like you dont have to be perfect to make money. In fact, trying to be perfect is how I keep giving money back.
