Huawei once again shed light on its “HarmonyOS global expansion” plan. The company recently held a roundtable discussion with the media, where it revealed that the aim of bringing its self-developed operating system worldwide is still underway.

Richard Yu, the Executive Director, Chairman of the Investment Review Board, and Director of Huawei Consumer Business, recalled HarmonyOS’s growth to date.

The firm has expanded its in-house OS on a large scale, from using it in a series of products like phones, tablets, and wearables, to integrating it into PC and smart cars.

And now the plan is Huawei HarmonyOS global expansion. Richard said that the company is looking forward to expand its OS worldwide. Though this will take time.

“We are considering gradually bringing HarmonyOS to the global market in the future. That’s just our initial plan, though. We will do that slowly, step by step.”

HarmonyOS has now become another OS ecosystem after Apple iOS and Google Android, supporting all smart devices and hardware across all types of scenarios.

In addition, HarmonyOS helped the company to extend its supply chain in China, getting rid of US tech products. 2024 appeared as a major switch for Huawei in the OS category as it launched the Android-free HarmonyOS NEXT.

Since then, Huawei has continued to improve its software iteration in five core aspects: smoothness, security, intelligence, refinements, and connectivity. The development that kicked off in 2019 has reached a wide spectrum.

HarmonyOS ecosystem now has over 90 million devices, 450,000 apps and services, 11 million developers, and 23,000 app innovation partners. He added:

The Huawei MatePad Pro Max stands out above all for its huge, very bright OLED display with an excellent PaperMatte finish, high-quality build, and powerful speakers. Input and accessories also make the tablet a serious PC replacement for productive tasks. Everyday performance from the Kirin 9030 Pro is good, but Huawei falls well behind the competition when it comes to graphics performance.

The lack of 6 GHz Wi-Fi and comparatively short battery life also cost it points. On the other hand, the Pro Max scores with good connectivity, low temperatures, and an extremely slim design. Nevertheless, it is an impressive premium tablet that particularly excels in display quality and multimedia, but does not lead the pack in every area.

With a chassis height of just 4.7 mm, the Huawei MatePad Pro Max aims to be the thinnest tablet in its size class, which would make it another 0.1 mm thinner than the MagicPad 4. We measure exactly 5 mm in the center of the tablet, while the thickness reaches up to 7.85 mm around the cameras. Despite the slight increase in thickness, wobbling on flat surfaces remains limited.

The MatePad Pro Max impresses with clean, tight gaps and excellent build quality. The aluminum frame also gives the tablet a premium look and feel. It sits comfortably in the hands and feels rigid, although it does produce a little creaking.

The MatePad Pro Max is available in gray and blue. It is neither dustproof nor waterproof.

The Huawei MatePad Pro Max shines with its outstanding PaperMatte OLED display, strong feature set, and first-class audio, but falls behind the competition in performance, software, and battery life.

Astell & Kern has unveiled the PD5 octa-DAC digital audio player, a lightweight, aluminum-body DAP offering high-resolution music enthusiasts a wide 20 Hz to 70 kHz frequency response through wired headphones, with support for uncompressed and compressed music files.

The A&K PD5 incorporates eight Cirrus Logic CS43198 audio D/A converters along with the company's Teraton Alpha audio technology to output high-resolution music with low distortion. The player supports 384 kHz, 32-bit PCM, DSD256, FLAC, WAV, MP3, and other common audio files stored on microSD cards up to 1.5 TB in size. The DAP can also stream music over 802.11ac from online sources like Qobuz thanks to its use of Android OS.

Huawei is once again thinking about the global expansion of HarmonyOS, and this time it seems to be a final decision. In a recent conference, the company mentioned it wants to see its self-developed software system as the second global alternative to Android and iOS.

On August 28 and 29, Huawei conducted a grand-scale HarmonyOS Ecosystem Conference (HEC) 2026 themed on “New Intelligent Connection, New Future”.

During the event, the Vice Chairman and Rotating Chairman of Huawei – Xu Zhijun, said Huawei is finally thinking seriously about the global expansion of HarmonyOS.

While revealing the new achievements of the self-developed OS in technology, standard software system for devices, and industry implementations, Xu stated that Huawei will soon conduct HarmonyOS pilot programs in selected countries and regions.

On receiving success in this process, the company will target a broader-scale development of HarmonyOS for global consumers. This move will make the company’s self-made operating system a new alternative (second option) to Android and iOS.

Xu says HarmonyOS development on the global level is a marathon without an end. If this step turns out to be successful, HarmonyOS will get the ability to go global and gain a foothold in the global market. He further mentioned:

“Based on validating the model and accumulating best practices, we aim to achieve the global-scale development of the HarmonyOS ecosystem and provide the world with a second option.”

It’s not the first time Xu has shared the company’s plans for the HarmonyOS global expansion. The executive delivered a similar statement during the Analysts Summit 2024. At that time, Huawei was working on an Android-free operating system.

Following the tech giant’s efforts, US lawmakers urged the administration to block HarmonyOS expansion in the global market as it could harm US national security.

But this time, Huawei’s decision seems to be more firm, and it may soon show progress in this aspect.

Huawei Pura X View has obtained a lot of attention in the market for its light and thin design, and unlike many foldable phones, it doesn’t bring bulkiness despite a similar format. One of the company’s officials has shed light on the new creation’s appearance. Richard Yu, the Chairman of Huawei Consumer Business, said that the Pura X View has a super light and thin design. It is quite different from the heavy, bulky foldable.

This is not a government building.This is Huawei’s Shanghai research campus.

A self-contained research city with lakes, landscaped grounds, modern laboratory blocks, elevated walkways, and its own internal light-rail system. Designed for 35,000 researchers. Current density is already extreme: roughly 80% hold a master’s degree or higher. About 10% are PhDs. Throw a stone and you hit advanced technical talent.

In 2025, Huawei generated CNY 880.9 billion in revenue.
It spent CNY 192.3 billion on R&D, 21.8% of total revenue, roughly US$27.9 billion.
That single-year R&D outlay exceeds the entire GDP of multiple countries with larger populations.
Total employees: ~213,000.R&D headcount: 114,000 (53.7% of the workforce).

Most companies and most nations still treat research as a residual. Huawei treats it as the core operating expense.

The result is not just beautiful architecture. It is sustained technological capacity under pressure.

This is the case study that matters.

Resource allocation at this intensity, sustained for more than a decade, produces outcomes that incremental budgets and short-term political cycles cannot match.
