Is it over?

As all ruffed grouse hunters know, your ability to hear a grouse flush and determine its direction is a key to success. Well, this week I received some bad news. A few months ago, I was sick as a dog for a week with a terrible cold. Felt worse than COVID. A couple of weeks after that, I suddenly developed tinnitus symptoms in my left ear. I finally was able to meet with an Ear/Nose/Throat Specialist and to get an extensive auditory hearing test. The results were moderate hearing loss in the middle and lower bands and tinnitus (think a white noise machine with a ringing sound mixed in). It appears to be neurological damage from when I was sick and it is irreversible.

Since onset, I have noticed that my ability to tell the direction of sounds is significantly hampered. I'm sure my ability to detect flush directions is now severely limited.

Has anyone here dealt with this and found a solution that would help an old, broken down grouse hunter?

New Term: Buckaholic?

Not sure if this is a new term or not, but it is an appropriate description.

My Nice, New Stockman

Got my new Buck 301 Stockman with Granadillo wood. I love a Stockman, and I love warm wood handles, so I talked myself into replacing my synthetic handled Stockman.

Who still likes S30v?

Just a few years ago, all the knife makers were using S30v as their premier steel in their high-end knives. Now, they have moved on. Who here still likes their S30v knives for EDC? Show them off while you comment.

Quality Kukri

Hello,

I have always been interested in Kukri knives. I know little about who makes good ones. What companies make solid, high quality kukri blades with good steel that I can look at adding to my knife collection? Also, I see the sizes vary significantly. What is the best all around size for general use in the woods?

Thank-you in advance.

Let's start a discussion. What is a "Fudd" and why do many try to use it as an insult.

I'd like to start a discussion about what the term Fudd means and why some folks try to use it as an insult.

To me, a hunter who often gets called a Fudd is often someone who promotes ethical hunting behaviors and cares about the animals they hunt. They enjoy and promote the historical culture of hunting's past: flannel, license back tags, end of day poker games, lever action 30-30s and pump action 870 Wingmasters. If they own a semi-automatic rifle, it's more likely a Browning BAR 30-06 and not some AR derivative. Their ethics make the fair chase of their quarry the goal, not the number of kills. Conservation vs Quantity.

And yet some people feel that is a derogatory description of people that they like to use against them. Like it's a bad thing. Usually it has some type of association with being an older hunter, too.

I don't understand why? I get called a Fudd all the time. If that is the definition of a Fudd, thank-you. You can call me that all day.

Anyone have opinions either way on this?

[Android] Feed stops scrolling like it is out of content. Version 026.19.0.2619080

My feed bottoms out while scrolling like it has run out of posts to view after a short period of time. Not sure if it has something to do with me usually selecting "latest" for the format I like to see my feed. Only has been happening the last couple of days. Any ideas?
