Lirin and his treatment of Kaladin

So I’m halfway through Rhythm of War. Urithiru has fallen, the Radiants have been immobilized, The Sibling is shielded (for now I think), and Lirin is trashing on Kaladin still for not becoming a surgeon.

Listen, I get where Lirin is coming from. Better to save lives by literally saving them rather than killing people. It makes sense. It’s the right thing. But it’s so unrealistic in this world. It’s hard for me to agree with Lirin when he says stuff like things are going to be the same regardless of who’s in control.

Now I understand Kaladin is going through it right now, that boy has some serious PTSD. Fighting, especially solo, probably isn’t the best thing for him. But for Lirin to come at him like “I told you so” just doesn’t sit well with me.

I’m interested to see where this occupation leads! Also shout out to the soldiers and their commander Teofil. What an epic last stand, broke my heart to see them die.

Location identification

I received this painting as a gift a few years ago. It was bought at an action in the ADK somewhere before I received it. It gives me Albany School of Art vibes.

I feel like the mountains could either be a view from Lake Champlain or Lake George. Anybody have an idea?

Post Cards!

My wife just got me some Adirondack post cards at an antiques fair, from the early 1900s. I’m originally from SL, so this was a pleasant surprise. Enjoy!

It emerged from our bathroom ceiling over 24 hours

Forgive me, but this is truly not not what I planned to encounter today…

We live in a condo and it emerged from the ceiling of our small bathroom over a short time span. I’m not actually sure whether it’s electrical wiring that looks biological or a fairytale-esque magic mushroom or something far more sinister.

If anyone could please look at the attached images and let me know what on earth I’m looking at or even the general category of such a thing I would greatly appreciate it!

Character Comparisons

What are some of your favorite character comparisons across different fantasy worlds? Why do these characters compare?

For me I see a comparison between Sylphrena (Sly) from the Storm Light Archives and Ari from the King Killer Chronicles.

Both Syl and Ari share an innocent wonder that never feels naive, just genuine. They’re drawn to understanding things deeply rather than simply observing, and both have a sharp wit underneath that curiosity, pushing back and teasing rather than just being wide-eyed.

They also form intense bonds with their protagonists (Kvothe and Kaladin). The interesting contrast is that Syl’s curiosity is tied to her becoming, as an honorspren growing into consciousness in the physical realm alongside Kaladin, her wonder is almost existential. Whereas Ari’s feels like a core personality trait baked in from the start, just who she is, world be damned.

Kaladin and Leshwi

So I’m a little over 100 pages into Rhythm of War and I love this honor amongst warriors. The idea that the Windrunners and the Heavenly Ones have this unspoken code of one on one combat is so cool.

I really enjoy how Kaladin and Leshwi are contesting rather than fighting to the death. This mutual respect is really cool. Maybe I’m missing something but I didn’t expect it, I really like it.

I’m excited to keep reading and see where this leads!

Also, Kaladin… are you okay? lol

I recently obtained two of my favorite books at the same time from an antique bookshop in NYC!

1.	The Silmarillion: American first edition, first printing by J.R.R. Tolkien. This is my favorite book of all time. The tales of the elves and the elder days are timeless. The world building is unmatched. It’s so beautiful. Fingolfin, you are my true High King.

2.	A Feast for Crows: First edition, first printing by George R.R. Martin. This is the best book from the A Song of Ice and Fire series in my opinion. The character development is unmatched. Jaime and Brienne, you have my heart.

Enjoy!

Hello!

I am unsure if this is the right place to ask this question, but there it goes anyways.

I work for the parks and rec department of a large city. Some of my job has to do with pools in city schools. Today I noticed this black substance in the gutter of the pool, it was coming out of a clogged drain within the gutter. I bottled some of it for a better look. Can anybody help me identify it?

Thank you.
