Roommate refuses to pay for utilities!

Roommate refuses to pay for her portion of utilities, literally refuses. Ive been kindly asking her for her portion of the utilities and she simply ignores the message. She doesn’t even pay rent on time so how can I expect her to utilities on time either?

Context: My roommate thinks everyone else is the problem and not her. She causes a lot of issues then disappears so you cannot confront her or she simply will ignore your texts. I missed one month of utilities because I was so busy trying to get my money back from two months prior. She literally didn’t want to pay me for both the utilities and wifi one time, so I ended up changing the wifi password which she paid immediately. Go figure. She was so upset, she decided she didn’t want to pay me directly anymore so she got her own wifi. All she had to do was pay me $22 a month.

I cannot stand this girl for the life of me, lol. Literally insufferable.

What can I do in this situation; I live in PA.

Is this a good way to get an Epic sponsorship?

May be this has been answered before, sorry but is this the right way to go about getting Epic Certification sponsorship?

I would like to pursue an Epic Systems certification but am unsure if this sponsorship/connection will work.

Currently, I work for a nursing home as an Admin Assistant and am aware that the admissions director and some other administration staff, along with our parent company uses Epic. I have a degree in Marketing and am intermediate in terms of analytics/research, etc.

My admissions director said they’d provide recommendation for me but should I also reach out to our parent company to request sponsorship?

Men: is being a father more important than being a husband?

Edit 2: Was thinking of changing the title to, is being a father or husband more meaningful but I’m enjoy the direction of the responses

Was chatting with a friend/possible suitor and noticed he often mentions being a father and wanting children but nothing about being a husband. He said he’ll answer me after work lol.

I don’t think fantasizing fatherhood is wrong but what about creating a wonderful, sustainable relationship with the mother of your future children? I want my spouse to see me as their partner and truly value our union instead of seeing me as this vessel to create his kids. I believe relationships come first then children. Without mom/dad there is no kid(s).

Do you think children are more important than a romantic relationship, or that you’d rather be a father than husband? I feel those who didn’t grow up in stable two-parent households or who had single-parent households, they don’t have an idea of what a healthy romantic relationship looks like so they choose children because their parents chose them.

**I hope this doesn’t come across as generalizing but I really want to see what men think.**

Edit: Truly loving some of these responses and I wish you guys so much peace in your relationship. With that, I guess what I’m really asking is why do mean choose to talk about fatherhood more than marriage, is because they think fatherhood is more important?

Like I mentioned, this guy is kinda dating only mentions being a father and he never brings up being a husband or having a wife.

Roommate is very difficult and I think it’s time I tell her to leave.

TLDR: Roommate is possibly upset that the lease automatically renewed and has become difficult to live with as she refuses to cooperate, communicate, or be considerate of our shared space. She refuses to speak to me and try to make this situation work or make the best of it. I’m considering telling her to leave and find a replacement roommate because I don’t want to live like this until next August.

We became roommates in May of this year, and the lease being automatically renewed, to which we’re both at fault, was the catalyst to our downfall.

Lease was automatically renewed because we never notified the property we weren’t going to renew. Unfortunately, I was under the impression that non-notification meant the lease wouldn’t be renewed. I accept my responsibility in this mistake. She was aware we needed to notify the property but decided that because I lived here prior to her moving in that it was my responsibility to notify the property of non-renewal. However, it was both our responsibility as we both needed to come to agreement on the notification that we weren’t renewing.

Please keep in mind, when I asked her if she wanted to renew the lease, she told me literally a couple hours prior that she didn’t want to. I was blindsided because her moving into the apartment was contingent on renewing this lease or us moving into another apartment together, both of which she said no to AFTER she moved in.

Anyway, since this issue, she has made the living situation impossible and unbearable.

-She moved in 4/28 so it was her job to pay her portion of May’s rent but because I mistakenly told her she didn’t have to pay a deposit, she thought it meant she didn’t have to pay the rent. I realized this mistake and asked her for at least 1/2 to which she ignored so I accepted that because I didn’t want to complicate things as I already dealt with a horrible roommate prior to her which left me looking for a roommate to begin with.

Our problems:

-When we got automatically renewed, she went behind my back to speak to the property manager to see if she could move out but was upset when she found out she couldn’t without being monetarily penalized. Basically, she wanted to leave without paying.

-She refuses to sweep or mop, never wipes down after herself or rinses the sink out. I to have come behind her. An ADULT! I have to wipe down the table before I sit down to eat because she doesn’t wipe after herself.

-She’s non-communal. We have 2.5 bathrooms and I had to remove the toilet paper from the 1/2 bath because she’ll use but not replace. When I removed the toilet paper, she began using the paper towels for the upstairs bathroom so I had to stop buying them as well. Everything is separate which is fine, but she’ll use my stuff but not let me use hers.

-She has not moved this nasty, filthy futon from our living room, along with other stuff that she doesn’t use. When I asked her to find a place for these items, not get rid of them, she became irate and refused(s) to remove them. The common area is not a storage space. (pictured above) She always leaves stuff all over the counter which takes up space to cook. I honestly believe she’s a hoarder, based off of her room and behaviors with items.

-She orders from Amazon almost daily but doesn’t pay rent on time. I changed the WiFi password because she refused to pay me for the WiFi or utilities and that was the only way I could get my money and she only gave me 1/2 when I did that. Because she doesn’t want to pay me, she got her own WIFI, like seriously?

-She pays rent late every time and when I got a call from the property about the remaining portion, I told her she needs to let me know when and if there is a possibility she cannot pay and she told me it’s not my business. I then let her know, as long as the property keeps calling me and our names are on the lease it is my business.

-She got upset that I was keeping the air at 77 degrees because she was cold. It’s the literal summer and we live on the east coast so it can get humid. Temps outside were reaching high 80s-high 90s and she wanted to keep the air off. Additionally, I had mold developing in my room because it was so humid in the apartment (we have basement bedrooms, living room and kitchen on top) and I was trying to keep the air on to prevent further growth. I tried to compromise but then made it 77 as a nonnegotiable. She retaliated by leaving an anonymous tip to the city’s Code and Enforcement which I intercepted because the caseworker left behind his card and said whenever someone leaves an anonymous tip, it’s always stems from retaliation.

-She leaves the apartment early in the morning and comes back at night to avoid me.

-She refuses to speak or communicate with me unless it’s via text which she doesn’t respond to unless she wants to.

She has been dishonest since the beginning, is super selfish and I feel like she’s a user. I’m thinking of telling her it’s time for her to leave and find a replacement roommate because I don’t think I can do this until next August.

WIBTA if I didn’t attend my friend’s birthday dinner because I know it’s going to be expensive.

Update: my friends and I had a separate discussion where I brought up some advice from you guys and we have decided for the future, we are setting dinner/event limits. We’re going to do a text in the group chat some time after her bday just so she hopefully doesn’t assume it’s about her.

My other friends will continue to go to dinner with her as it’s coming up soon, and I have discussed with her that I will be unable to make it because I want to be conscious of money. She understood and admitted she can be pricey.

In our friend group, when it’s someone’s birthday we always pay for the birthday person. Whether they choose to do an event, go out to eat, a concert, etc., we will pay for the ticket or the price of their plate.

But we have this one friend. Love her to pieces but she’s greedy.

Whenever we go out she excessively orders in hopes that we split the bill evenly so that her still gets what she wants but at a lower bill. When it comes to her birthday, she really over does it. Last year, she had around 3 drinks, 2 personal appetizers, a market price meal ($$$) and dessert on top of the one they provide simply because it’s your birthday. We were a party of 5 but split the bill 4 ways so we ended up paying $140 per person. I’m still traumatized.

This year, she wants to eat again. *Long sigh* Because last year left such a sour taste in our mouths, we’re all not excited to go.

One friend was on the phone with her recently and she brought up how she was going to “treat herself,” and said all the things she wanted to get and when I heard that, I just got really upset. Please understand, the restaurant she chose is not only pricey but, they’re priced a la carte.

Yes, it’s your birthday and yes, we pay for the birthday person but you can’t “treat yourself” on someone else’s dime. I know it’s a day meant to celebrate her but it makes me feel she’s super inconsiderate because there are times she doesn’t want to pay for something so she’s a no show or sending something back.

Initially, I texted her I’d let her know soon if I’d be able to attend because finances were tight, even though, they’re fortunately not. Still, I like to be mindful of expenses especially in this economy. She then responded back, she understands and that she’ll find something else that she and I can do that won’t break the bank. It’s like she knows this is going to be an expensive dinner already.

Would I be wrong if I didn’t go?

Need Advice: What temp should we keep the apartment 🙄

I made a post about my roommate last week regarding them not paying me. https://www.reddit.com/r/badroommates/s/X57jipKtA3

This is becoming a frustrating experience with my current and new roommate as she finds a problem with everything and only considers herself.

Our apartment is a two story with basement bedrooms, so living area on top, bedrooms on bottom. It’s been a pretty warm summer on the east coast, and temps are starting to mellow out but it’s still summer weather and we still have humidity in the areas downstairs.

I decided to keep the ac on 78/79 because honestly, our apartment doesn’t get that hot as we have lofted ceilings but downstairs there has been a lot of moisture and I recently found mold in my bedroom. Unfortunately, my roommate says that’s too low and she’s super cold that’s why she keeps turning the temp to 83 which makes the rooms unbearably warm and humid. Additionally, she says it’s best that way because it keeps the bills down and that she doesn’t want a high bill that’s out of her budget but it’s like what budget because she has packages delivered daily! Also, she often falls asleep with all the lights on.

I’ve lived in this apartment longer than she has and have dealt with maintaining energy bills before but she acts like she knows it all and that because she hasn’t dealt with something in the past that whatever issue is at hand, it doesn’t exist. She’s exhausting.

Honestly, I feel that because she’s unhappy with our contract getting automatically renewed, something we were equally at fault for, she now wants to control everything. I also don’t think it’s about the budget, nor does she care about mold growth as that can affect her too, but that she simply doesn’t like cooler temps. If it’s not her way, it’s no way.

What temperature should we keep the apartment to combat mold, maintain energy bill, and also not start another argument?

dating with ghsv1: probably have to end things with this guy

life can be so unrelenting and unfair and there’s nothing you can do about it.

About a year ago, I contracted GHSV1 from a guy who didn’t disclose. Had he been upfront and communicated that and given me the opportunity to make an informed decision I probably would’ve continued but no, because someone didn’t disclose to him he felt no shame doing that to me.

Here I am a year later and there’s this guy that I actually like; the compatibility and attraction is heavily mutual but I feel too scared to proceed now that things have become more intense. I am not ashamed nor scared to tell him but I am afraid to lose the connection. I’ve suffered plenty of sexual harm and trauma from men so to get this point with a man who actively supports me and considers me is definitely a nail in the social coffin.

Also, I’m a black woman, and unfortunately the black community holds a quite ignorant stance toward herpes. There’s a lot of misinformation surrounding STD/STI’s in general and only if they knew it’s worse to get Diabetes/Hypertension then maybe the community would come to better terms with not only their sexual health but health altogether. (I worked in sexual education back in college a few years so I know a lot about STDs) But I completely understand the sentiment and apprehension.

Anyway, he already made a very vocal frustration if he ever got it so I know this connection is something I’m going to have to slowly walk away from. I could tell him all the things I do to reduce the viral but ignorance will always win.

But it’s like damn, why do things have to be this way, when will I catch a freaking break? Oh well, life is life and we move on.

Update: Finally confronted roommate about money!

https://www.reddit.com/r/badroommates/s/lkUpWyAbFb

(link goes back to og post)

So, as you know my roommate was literally avoiding me to the point she would leave early and then return home late when she assumed I’d went to work.

Anyway, I had I called in late and decided to wait to confront my roommate. Of course, as expected, she was waiting for me to leave to avoid me. I literally waited 10-15 min longer before heading out and guess who strolled in with new packages?

When I approached her she was very solemn and wouldn’t directly make eye contact with me. I greeted her which she deliberately failed to reply back, then I asked if she could send over a payment for both May/June’s wifi/utilities.

She said she had been waiting to “catch me and reconcile” that information with me because I had sent over two different amounts and she didn’t know where to send it. Please understand, I sent her two separate texts with both amounts broken down and where to send them. I let her know it’s two separate amounts because it’s for two separate months but to send it via cashapp.

Sharply, she says, “I don’t use Cashapp.”

I let her know that’s ok, I’m fine with Zelle or Apple Pay. I then text her with the amounts again and reply to each previous message so she can see the broken down price/way to send it and when it was sent.

I find it so laughable that she tried to make it seem like she was trying to “reconcile” the amounts with me without actually even trying to do that. We literally have each other’s number so why not simply text me to verify? She’s so sneaky and absolutely tries to gaslight as if she’s some victim.

But if I don’t receive any money before tonight at 11:59PM, the wifi password will change.

UPDATE #2: She gave me $100 of the $180 owed! Partial payment does not grant access to the wifi. So last night she fell asleep as soon as she walked in so despite me changing the password, nothing happened. However, tonight she came in dropped her stuff at the front door and ran into her room. She came out about 20 min later and went to make a call to one of her friends I suppose. Then she came into the kitchen and took out some food, that’s when I received the partial payment and a text that said she should’ve communicated that she wanted to wait until this upcoming Friday to pay me. She literally had a package delivered here just 5 hrs ago and do you know it was express shipping so I’m pissed! Yeah, right. I guess Love Island is going to have to wait until Friday then!

my roommate is avoiding coming home so she doesn’t have to clean or pay me.

it’s been exactly two months and time has quickly revealed that my roommate duped me.

during her tour, she led with her being a tidy person, pays bills on time, cleans up after herself. ya know, really sold herself. fast forward, none of this behavior exists. her futon and large packages, empty boxes, personal items that are blocking entryways have yet to move from the spot she placed them. her items are constantly on the counter to the point i have to move everything before cooking. despite us having ample storage, she acts like she can’t put items away because as she states she’s, “super short.” we’re both 5’3. i suggested her getting a stepping stool but because i mentioned i would look for one if i had the time, she said she didn’t think it was necessary for her to buy one.

anyway, she stays out of the apartment from sun up to sun down even when she doesn’t have to work. it’s like she purposely keeps herself busy to avoid cleaning up or facing me when i ask her to do her share. she cooked dinner one night and instead of sweeping the entire kitchen, she swept the area she stood near because as she puts it, she didn’t move much. we have a dual trash bin and she never takes the trash out, if she does, which has only been once maybe twice, she will only replace one of the trash bags.

when she moved in, she used my remaining dishwasher pods to cleans her dishes and utensils that were in storage and hasn’t used the dishwasher since because she doesn’t want to empty out the dishwasher. this causes dishes to stay on the counter for days as well as food in the sink.

currently, she also owes me close to $200 for her share of our wifi/utilities. she didn’t pay the first month and i even texted her an entire week before this payment was due and she didn’t even text me back. completely ignored me. yet, there are CONSTANT amazon packages delivered every single day.

it’s like every time she owes money or needs to clean up, she disappears.

i work overnight, so i think she waits until i leave to come home. i gave her grace with the bills but now my kindness has been taken for granted. it’s like, if you have a problem with your money tell me, don’t leave me in the dark.

nothing she has said or done has been considerate of me nor communicated. im so over her.

My roommate is a user and leech who refuses to pay her share for anything.

TLDR: New roommate communicates poorly, is leaving me in a tough situation with the lease, refuses to do her share of the household chores, refuses to pay me on time but has plenty of money for Amazon and other deliveries. She uses people and is completely inconsiderate as she only thinks of herself.

Edit: my ex roommate is not who I am discussing. My ex roommates parents bought her a house or are letting her live in their newly purchased home. She didn’t have to move but chose to spite me. However, she was legally responsible for paying her portion of the rent until a new tenant was swapped because the property doesn’t allow early termination. Once again this post is not about the ex-roommate it’s about the NEW ROOMMATE.

Had a previous roommate who moved out literally 2 months AFTER the lease renewed (simply to spite me because she knew I couldn’t afford the rent on my own and she was emotionally immature) and left me with searching for a new roommate, despite that being her job. Anyway, after months of it just being me, the previous roommate still paid for her portion of rent and I found a new roommate. I ended up losing out on $950 because my ex-roommate told me a deposit wasn’t necessary so that’s what I told the new roommate. But, the deposit was necessary because it was supposed to go toward May rent.

I ended up paying for that portion and politely asked the new roommate for at least half of that because I made a mistake and she was like, “Um, no.” Understood, I let it go.

Since then she’s been the biggest leech, user and worst communicator EVER.

Her moving in was contingent on us signing the lease renewal or us leaving the apartment and signing onto a new spot together. Although she communicated her hesitations, I let her know she did not have to move in, no pressure but she still decided to. She had other plans that weren’t discussed with me, basically using my apartment as a last ditch effort. Plus, she’s been working with the property manager behind my back to get her way out of the lease leaving me with no choice but to find ANOTHER roommate and start this process again because I/we cannot afford early termination fees + move in costs.

As for her habits: horrible and untidy. When she moved in, she used all of my dishwasher pads to clean her unused kitchenware; she hasn’t touched the dishwasher since and refuses to use it so she hand-washes everything. This is just reason for her not to unload the dishwasher.

•she leaves food in the sink ALWAYS

•she has yet to sweep the common area/kitchen. Instead she wipes exactly where she stood in the kitchen

•we have two trash bins that pull out from the cabinet. She has only taken the trash out once to trash area and when she does take trash out of the bin, she only replaces one trash bin!

•she used all the toilet paper in the additional bathroom and never replaced it. So, I removed the remaining toilet paper only to find out she was now using the paper towels to wipe herself. She said she’s not a paper towel user so she excused herself from buying those but once I stopped buying them, she stopped using the bathroom upstairs altogether.

•she constantly buys stuff from Amazon, door dashes every single grocery, etc etc, but has yet to pay my for 2 months of WiFi and electricity bills so far since she’s moved in.

*leaves everything around. She has stuff that she’s moved in 2 months ago when she moved in and now they exist perpetually unused by the entrance because she yet to move them.

•the counters are constantly covered with items that she doesn’t care to put away so the kitchen looks messy.

•she’ll leave early in the morning and come back late at night so she can avoid conversations about rent, lease renewal, issues, etc., but she talk to you about Love Island all day then the following day send you the longest block of text you could ever read.

It’s like she only moved here because she no longer wanted to pay for storage and because she’s trying to avoid paying move in cost fees. She is completely inconsiderate and will lie to victimize herself while equally being condescending. We got into a tense argument and now she’s been moping ever since.

The person she said she was is not the person that currently exists within the apartment. She is none of those things and I’m so annoyed that I didn’t question her when she said she once moved 6x in two years.

I’ll move with more intention next time.

I want the PPA dismantled.

I know a lot of you guys love to bootlick for the PPA and blame the driver because the PPA is supposedly NEVER wrong but I don’t care. They’re ruthless, are willing to apply arbitrary tickets just to get your money, willing to put tickets in collections for the smallest amounts; they’re horrible and I detest them.

I went to put some tickets, that I am very much being accountable for, on a payment plan. I then noticed a ticket for prohibited parking, unbeknownst because there was never a ticket on my car that day for it. I look at the images and it has my license plate but the inspection ticket and car placement of a black car.

My car is WHITE and I have had Lemon Hill parking passes since June 4th!

Another ticket was for corner clearance. I have photos of my car parked ahead of the corner and they still are charging me with the ticket.

Another ticket said I was parked 20 minutes over on metered parking. My street doesn’t have metered or timed parking.

I have $150 in tickets that don’t belong to me nor have I committed and I would love to get my balance completely down but every time I do, they give me something new. I’m so over it. I’d rather find a parking garage and walk 30 minutes than park on the street because they’ll probably just ticket me for car looking too white at this point.

Mold in bedroom closet [Philly, PA]

Just found mold in closet. It’s a basement bedroom and I’ve been living here since March 24’ (moved in with roommate onto their lease who has since moved out and a new tenant has taken their place) and our lease just renewed for September, ughhhhhh!

My clothes bin always sat in this corner of the closet so I never thought to move until today when I decided to fold my clothes. For months, probably since May of last year, I’ve been getting headaches repeatedly, my post nasal drip and congestion is constant, brain fog—feels like my body is under attach. I have a mold sensitivity and when I saw the mold I saw omg, this is exactly why I’ve been sick.

Like I’ll have a headache I cannot shake then I’ll leave my room, go upstairs and boom, the headache is gone!

I’ve just out in a property request to maintenance for this issue. Hopefully, I’ll be able to break the lease and leave because I physically cannot stay here.

I’m over it and kinda don’t care about debt anymore.

Recently turned 35(F)

Total: $62k debt

(Rounded up:)

Student Loans $57000

CC: $4000

Tickets (foolish, I know) $600

Income: $2000 $15.92/H

TLDR: I guess I’m beginning to feel numb again or upset that my life isn’t how I expected it to be. Becoming debt free feels like a thing of the past and I don’t know, so what. Who cares, right? I do but I don’t know where to start besides making more money, obviously but the job market is so bad. Does it all matter in the end?

Rant/Vent:

I have a college degree but currently work as an overnight worker. When I graduated college, my family lost our house, I was let my job because boss threatened me, my brother became an addict, and my father passed. Fell into a deep depression for several years and student loans bloomed because I forgot to put them in forbearance. Ended up working menial jobs because of burnout, anxiety, depression.

First 2.5 years of my 30s belonged to be my dementia-ridden mother’s sole caregiver, despite her having 3 other children, and the other 2.5 was burnout and BPD. Ended up losing my a well paying job because I was so burned out AGAIN. Had to use my CC. Only thing I could do and find was an overnight job.

I want to pay my debt so bad. I hate my reality and want to desperately fix it but where do I begin. I’m so lost and want to get it right.

Sorry for the rant.

Roommate drama: I need reassurance.

TLDR: should I stay or should I go?

I signed onto a lease about 2 years ago with my ex roommate. She was hell and really made the experience difficult especially when she decided to leave in beginning of the new lease because she knew I couldn’t afford the rent alone and she left to be spiteful. This caused me grand, emotional stress and I was depressed for months. Anyway, property management wouldn’t let her terminate her portion of the lease because they don’t allow it so she had to pay her portion until a new tenant replaced her.

The new tenant then moved in and even though we mesh well on an interpersonal level, she doesn’t communicate. I dont know something until it’s last minute or I find out she spoke to leasing behind my back. Because of this our lease ended up being automatically renewed because she waited until the day before we had to sign it to say she didn’t want to renew it even though we discussed renewing when she initially signed the lease.

Then, she leaves her shit everywhere. It’s like she leaves the stuff there for days/weeks, then takes an item away on to later replace it with something else. Like stop buying stuff when you can’t even handle what you have now! She won’t sweep, or mop, has used the toilet paper in the guest bathroom but won’t replace it. She just took out the trash for the first time in 2 months! Also, she paid the rent late and asked me what the late fee was which I told her but she still hasn’t paid the late fee (my portion is automatically taken out) and she still owes me for her portion of the WiFi and utilities (automatic payments) that I asked for 2 weeks ago!

Should I just get my own apartment though it would cost effective with a roommate, or should I stay with her? I’m so over roommates at this point.

Lemon Hill/W Girard Ave already a hellscape.

There’s 8 days until FIFA fan fest begins and traffic by Sedgley Dr/Aldi is HELL. Bumper to bumper traffic, police poorly directing traffic, general confusion; it all feels like it was planned without the thought of commuters, residents, etc.

Pretty already annoyed going into this 39 day festival😩

So my ex roommate moved out several months ago with the malicious intent to leave me with the burden of paying for the rent by myself. That’s neither here nor there, but she was forced to pay her portion of the rent until a roommate replacement occurred because property management doesn’t allow anyone to break the lease.

Both the last month’s deposit and security are owed to her, as she paid them when she initially moved in. I moved in several months later. PM will not disperse those funds back into her account as my new roommate and I are now the only ones on the lease, not her. Ultimately, we’ll pay her back those funds once we vacate the property if we choose to not renew the lease.

Here’s the dilemma: My ex roommate being petty, cancelled the rent payment (in the middle of night without forewarning) for this month (May) because they won’t be living there, obviously. However, I stupidly told my new roommate she wouldn’t owe a deposit because I assumed that rent took care of the previous month and not the forthcoming month. So not only did I have to pay that other portion of the rent 😩 I had to pay late due fees!

1. How do I go about asking her to pay me that back or is that wrong to ask her now?

2. For the last month’s rent, because she is owed that money back, how do the new roommate and I pay that to the property?

Tl:DR—Roommate was horrible and demands both security and last months rent despite her leaving me at the beginning of the lease renewal, me having to pay to clean her room and the holes she left behind, plus she was horrible and narcissistic.

I moved into my ex-roommate’s apartment a couple years back so we were both on the lease at one point. As of now, she, the original lease holder is no longer on it as she left a THREE WEEKS into the new lease because they simply no longer wanted to be there. The current lease ends in October but my sister will be moving into my ex roommates room mid May so they essentially will be swapped out.

Well, my roommate reached out requesting me to not only send back the security deposit, as I will, but the last month’s rent as well since she’d already paid them both when she moved in. I’m okay with sending the security deposit back but as for the last month’s rent, no. Not only did I have to pay to get her room professionally cleaned for my sister to be able to move in because of how bad she left it but I have to take care of the holes in the wall she left behind despite her claiming she’d take care of them, I also had to clean off our deck from all the dirt she left behind from her stuff.

On top of that, this roommate signed the lease for this current year knowing they were planning on leaving and purposely did it because they wanted me to suffer. That was the whole gist anyway, they were narcissistic and petty. Then, she left me with the task of finding a roommate even though she left and it was her responsibility. She was pissed when she found out management wouldn’t let her just leave the lease so she had to continue paying her portion of the rent for the last few months until my sister came along, well when my sister moves in.

Also, living with her was pure hell. The last few months she mentally tortured me to the point I had a depressive episode because of how rude she was to me. I literally would come home and isolate because being around her you could feel the tension and she made it unbearable. Like she would do things just to inconvenience me; I honestly should write a separate post on how bad it became living with her.

From my pov and truest feelings I only want to give back the security and not the last months rent because she didn’t leave anything the way she found it, she was horrible, she purposely left the lease because she wanted me to suffer because she knew I couldn’t afford the rent by myself, and I had to pay to clean after her. But morally I feel that may be wrong.

What do you guys think? Should only the security deposit go back or both the security and last months rent go back to her? By the way, this isn’t me requesting legal advice as our lease states whoever is on the lease at the end of the lease shall receive the security deposit under the conditions of the apartment. So if she isn’t on, it’s my and whoever else’s discretion to return it.
