Folks with 3 kids: how old was your oldest when you still used your UA for all three of them together?

Mine are now 2, 5, and 8, and I refuse to believe we're about to age out of our UA! They still seem happy to all ride together whenever we do so.

Tell me I can still find a way to sanely take them around for another however many years.

How to respond to a 5yo repeatedly throwing small objects into an air filter in a way that disincentivizes the behavior?

Our 5yo has discovered a delightfully devilish little hobby: secretly throwing small objects into our air filters. Stickers, leaves, pieces of string: basically anything that makes a fluttering noise when the fan is on.

The result is either that the filter in their room gets turned off (because the noise bothers the kids), or, when an adult has the time, we'll take the filter apart and remove the offending object, which seems like a fun activity for the kid.

So it feels like all the incentives are aligned in favor of continuing this irksome behavior, and we're at a bit of a loss as to how to respond in a way that actually discourages it.

Car enthusiast garage / industrial flex space near Park Slope?

My husband is looking for a local space to work on his car. We’re looking for leads on any shared spaces where people can split rent to work on projects together. Or small industrial slips or units where he can set up tools and a workbench. Or any landlords who are willing to lease a garage space with power where wrenching is explicitly allowed. I don't know if we’d be able to find anything in Park Slope proper, but nearby areas like Red Hook or Gowanus or Sunset Park would also be great. Any leads or areas to check out would be amazing.

Are the sprinklers on in all the Prospect Park playgrounds? Specifically: Splash Pad, Harmony Playground, 3rd Street Playground?

Don't want to drag the kids to one of them after school only to find out the water is off.

If tracking works for you but still feels like a chore, stop tracking (most of) your vegetables

For most of us, just keeping tabs on calories and protein is more than enough. If you’re the type who gets a little thrill from maxing out your daily Vitamin A and K bars, this advice isn't for you -- by all means, carry on.

But if you find the accountability of tracking useful yet still feel like logging every single bite is a chore, try skipping the veggies (that is, skip logging them, not eating them).

Sure, you might still want to track potatoes, avocados, and other calorie-dense items. But if we're talking peppers and tomatoes, it's perfectly fine to leave them off the log and just add a generic 50–200 calorie "vegetables" entry to your day.

The friction of having to track a food is a slight demotivator to actually eating it. Most of us really don’t need any more reasons to avoid extra veggies, and they are almost certainly not the main reason we're keeping the extra weight on.

How do you decide whether to take young kids to a neighbor’s funeral?

Sorry for the rather morbid question, but it’s been on my mind lately, and I’m struggling to think my way through it.

Our kids are 8, 5, and 2. We have a downstairs neighbor who is very sociable, and the kids have known him since birth. We see him on our stoop several times a week and always stop to chat. We’re close enough that we always give him a small gift for the holidays, but not so close that we come over to each other's apartments. He’s also our building’s super, so he stops by whenever something needs to be fixed and takes care of the trash and the recycling bins outside our building. The kids know him well, and he is a constant, friendly presence in their universe.

This neighbor is also older, and his health has sharply deteriorated over the past few months. In the last month and a half alone, he’s had three separate week-long hospital stays for heart and kidney issues. He’s diabetic, has had heart surgery before, and lately he really doesn’t look well. He’s slowed down a lot, and unfortunately, I wouldn’t be surprised if he died sometime this year or next -- he seems to be in pretty rough shape.

If he dies, it’s without question that my husband and I would attend his funeral. However, I’m not sure what to do about the kids. They have never experienced the death of anyone they know, so we've never had to navigate this before.

How do you make decisions about when and whether your kids should attend a funeral, especially for someone who isn't immediate family but is a regular part of their lives? Any advice or experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Are sprinklers and spalshpads on yet in NYC parks?

Mainly interested in the Water Lab at Brooklyn Bridge Park, but also other sprinklers in the rest of the playgrounds. Googling around, seems like they’re on after the forecast shows highs in the 80s, just wondering if someone saw them being on yesterday?

SPF with a *matte* finish that doesn't dry out the skin too much for tret?

I'm looking for an SPF that gives a matte finish, doesn't leave a white cast, reapplies without pilling, and that will work well for someone who has a history of barrier issues when using tret (albeit on other formulations, not the micro one I'm currently on).

Am I right that sunscreens that have a matte finish usually also have alcohol in them? And if so, does that alcohol work ok with tret or does it dry the skin out too much?

I've been using the BoJ Aqua Fresh and Haru Haru Wonder Black Rice Airlyft, and they're both fine, but I am still more glowy with them than I prefer to be.

Is there a sunscreen that works better for my preferences? Or do I absolutely have to start using something like a setting powder if I want a matte finish? Really hoping to avoid the powder/face makeup route, especially since I don't know how it will work with on-the-go SPF and moisturizer reapplication during the day.

FWIW, my routine:

AM: Vanicream Gentle Cleanser on mornings after tret nights (o/w just water), Finacea 15% AzA, Hada Labo Gokojyun Premium + iUnik Beta Glucan mixed and applied together with a splash of water, Aestura 365 cream or lotion, SPF 50+ reapplied every 2 hours; Aestura often reapplied once during the day

PM tret nights (4/5 nights currently): Cerave Makeup Removing Balm for eye makeup, Vanicream Gentle Cleanser (w/konjac sponge 1-2x weekly only if peeling), Mixsoon Bifida Ferment Essence, Revize Tret Micro 0.025%.

PM rest nights (1/5 nights currently): cleanse as above, Hada Labo + iUnik, Aestura, maybe also Vaseline

(I am using tret micro 4 days in a row and taking a break on the 5th day, slowly working my way toward daily application. Barely any flaking with my current routine, and skin is usually calm, but I have a history of repeatedly breaking my barrier when using cream and gel formulations, so I want to be careful.)
