I made a video tribute to our favorite TFOB character and you're all going to suffer with me. (audio on)

Audio books: Dropoff in quality in book 3?

I had a quick question about audio book quality. I started with the kindle version of We Are Legion but DNF'd it about halfway through. Thankfully I gave it a second try with the audio books, especially after listening to the audio book of Project Hail Mary and they've rekindled my interest in the series. I devoured the first two books, then took a break for the release of the second book in The Captive's War series.

But getting back into it now with All These Worlds, I can't help but notice a dropoff in the quality of the narration. Ray Porter is great as usual, but the recording quality sounds a bit rougher. Maybe it was recorded at a different studio, or maybe Ray recorded it at home during COVID, IDK.

I've since adjusted to it and I'm back in the groove of listening, but I wonder if I'm the only person who's noticed this, or if not, there's any known reason why. Thanks!

New-ish to this, have questions about experiences and progressing.

So I took mushrooms a really long time ago with a HS friend of mine. It was a pretty pleasant and mild experience overall, but I was certainly expecting more in the way of visuals. At peak, the kitchen tiles were crawling slightly. I have no idea about dosage, I just remember I took 2 caps, 2 stems. No idea what strain they were. We just ate them directly. I think I might have chased them with orange juice.

Many years later I've tried them again since, and tried to be more scientific about it. I've done 2 trips recently, both times 2 grams each of Golden Teacher. I made tea both times, first time I chopped them up really finely with a knife, second time I used a grinder. I was a little more lax about the steeping time the first time around, but I know it was at least 15 minutes at 70C. Second time I steeped for a full 20 minutes.

My first trip was extremely mild. I was doing some work on my computer until I started to feel the effects kick in, at which point I went downstairs to watch a movie with great visuals. When using the computer I saw some texture crawling on the screen, but mostly the trip feels like a really strong euphoria for me. It also seems acts as an accelerant to my already strong sense of synesthesia. Its mostly a body high, but I was also fairly sedentary for the whole trip

Took the second trip this past weekend. Almost no visuals other than at one point I caught a slight "wobble" in my extreme peripheral vision. The euphoric sense was much stronger this time. Probably because I was working on an emptier stomach, possibly because I steeped it longer but I figure most of the extraction happens at the start. This time I went for a walk on a nature trail because it was a really nice day and was listening to music. Still the same heightened synesthesia but also a strong body high, to the point where my balance felt slightly off. When I got home 2-3 hours later I thought the trip was done but it picked up a strong 'second wind.' Not unpleasant, but I kind of wanted it to be over and it wasn't yet. Remembered to just enjoy the ride and I did.

I definitely plan to try again in the future, but wondering how to progress. Should I try a stronger strain? Higher dosage? Am I wrong to be actively chasing visuals or do those just not happen for everyone? Another interest for me is the mental well-being aspect. I have pretty bad anxiety and depression, and while during the trip, I experience a wonderful sense of well-being I don't normally experience, but it doesn't last for me the way others have said that it 're-wires your brain." I wasn't expecting a miracle, but I'd love to know how to engage with this more.

I realize this is kind of a rambly mess. Thanks for whatever advice you offer from it.

Is "Clearing its throat" the new Coppery Taste of Fear(tm)?

I'm on my first reread of TFOB and this phrase keeps sticking out to me like a companionable silence. They use this phrase pretty dang often to describe a minimal effort made my a person or anthropomorphized event. It could be used to describe the deathless enemies field projection weapons, or a person literally clearing their throat to announce their presence.

Does anyone else get the sense that a large amount of time has passed between The Mercy of Gods and The Faith of Beasts? When they begin discussing the idea of making the human population self sustaining, its mentioned that most of the human moiety is no longer in their fertile, childbearing years. This makes sense since the Carryx selected the most accomplished humans in their field, which mostly only comes with time and experience.

But quite a few of the main characters in The Mercy of Gods seem to be described as quite young: Dafyd, Jessyn, Jelllit, Irinna, and Rickar. Compar even refers to Dafyd as "Young Alkhor" frequently.

Has several years passed between these books? I know that JSAC are no strangers to having a good bit of time pass between books and never really mentioning it.

During the mission "Absolute Power," when you infiltrate the Generdyne facility on Neon, you'll encounter two types of enemies: Generdyne security, and Generdyne technicians. The security force is actively hostile to you - they're armed, armored and shoot on sight. The Technicians run screaming from you, taking cover and hiding wherever they can. They only attack you when cornered, and when they do, its with their bare fists.

Sarah don't care though. She just murders them while they're running from her.

I'm experiencing a fairly recent problem (last week or so) where the entire premiere interface will just freeze. After a moment, the screen wish wash to white, Windows will report that the program is not responding, and then a few minutes later, the software will return to normal operation. Sometimes these freezes will chain 2-4 times together. I've been using Premiere Pro for several years with this exact same setup. My GPU drivers are up to date. This will happen 8-10 times per hour and I'm losing a lot work time to this frustrating situation. Any help would be tremendously appreciated.

Windows 11, 11700K, 4070, 64GB of ram.
