A Malay Wave Washes Over Malaysia

A MALAY WAVE WASHES OVER MALAYSIA

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — The popularly named "Malay unity pact" emerged victorious in yesterday's polls, securing 134 of 222 seats in Malaysia's lower house of parliament, well clear of the 112 seat threshold required for a simple majority.

The pact, consisting of the United Malays National Organisation-led Barisan Nasional and Malaysian Islamic Party-led Perikatan Nasional, delivered the reformist-oriented Pakatan Harapan a resounding defeat.

The United Malays National Organisation, more commonly known as UMNO, had led the country since its independence until 2018. Its presidents have held the position of prime minister for sixty of the country's 64 years of existence, a record that is set to be extended as party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi is sworn in later today to become Malaysia's 11th prime minister.

Taking up the position of deputy prime minister will be Perikatan Nasional chairman Ahmad Samsuri Mokthar, who is also a vice-president of the Malaysian Islamic Party, more commonly known as PAS. A member of its so-called professional wing, the mild-mannered chief minister Terengganu is widely perceived as a competent moderate, and was chosen for the role with the hope of helping moderate the party's image among the country's non-Muslims.

Pakatan Harapan, led by outgoing prime minister Anwar Ibrahim, have been reduced to the third-largest bloc in the lower house of parliament, forming the official opposition. It is still unclear as of yet whether Anwar, who is no stranger to being in the opposition, will remain in charge of the coalition or even his party. He contested and lost in seat of Permatang Pauh, long considered a stronghold for him and his family; his wife and daughter having represented it during his imprisonment for charges of sodomy widely recognised to have been politically motivated.

The coalition however cannot claim to be surprised by the result. Pakatan had performed poorly against the combined forces of Barisan and Perikatan in the three state elections held the previous year, serving as a prelude for yesterday's result. A period of introspection will surely follow for the coalition, as it decides its future in the coming months.

The two regionalist blocs in eastern Malaysia, sometimes collectively referred to as the "Borneo bloc", solidified their hold over the semi-autonomous states of Sabah and Sarawak, but must make do with a new reality of being excluded from the federal government. They had previously supported Anwar's unity government, which included Barisan Nasional, formed after the 2022 election delivered an unprecedented hung parliament.

Washing machine will not hold water Toshiba AW-DS160S

Toshiba AW-DS160S.

Encountered an issue with my washing machine during a wash cycle where the thing would not fill up with water.

There's no issue with water intake. Water will go into the drum and seemingly straight out.

Googled and couldn't find any answers as to what would cause this. Can anyone here offer some advice?

Thank you.

1st gen Kia Carens, limp mode, P0885 fault code

Hello folks,

I have a rebadged first generation G4GC 2.0L engine AT Kia Carens (Naza Citra) mfg in 2010.

It is stuck in 3rd gear. Reverse and neutral work ok.

Went to my usual mechanic and they said they couldn't figure out what's wrong exactly but suspects it's an issue with the wiring.

I plan on going to a workshop specialising in Korean cars later.

In the meantime, I plugged in my ELM327 clone and it gave me two P0885 fault codes.

Can anyone advise how I can diagnose and if possible resolve the issue myself? Thanks.

Bought me first ever tub of Vanish

Previously used a refill packet of Vanish laundry booster which contained no cellulase or TAED (among other things).

Dad drives a Naza Citra. Transmission is shot and he doesn't want to fix it because it's an old car with separate suspension issues, but he needs a car for work.

Looked for <10 year-old second-hand MPVs and B-segment sedans but found that they're still quite pricey. I suggested we look for >10 year models but he argues that they will have lots of things that need to be replaced and doesn't want to deal with that.

So then we agreed that we might as well do hire purchase and get a brand new car. We settled on the Perodua Alza (X/Cheapest variant) as that suits his needs and the price is still ok.

The plan is to apply for the loan and purchase the Alza under my name, but he will be paying for it. He doesn't have a bank account (don't ask why).

The problem now is that his health is not great. He is 58 this year and has isolated systolic hypertension as well as heart issues, and we recently had a health scare (nothing too serious). This has made him doubtful, as if he were to become incapacitated or die, the burden of repaying the loan would fall to me, at which point I would have essentially zero disposable income (actually, I think I'd probably go into debt).

So now he's saying we (really, he) need to think whether to go through with purchasing the Alza, buy a second-hand car (we'd have to get a loan for that too), or fix the Naza (which he would prefer not to, because he's anecdotally never seen a transmission that's been 'fixed' last long).

Honestly, I don't know what to do. The Alza seems like a bad idea, but if we went for a second-hand car we'd have to go through the same thing (loan, if he dies I'll be the one that has to repay), on top of having to shell out for replacement parts (absorbers, etc.) sooner than you would have to for a brand-new car. Fixing the Naza doesn't seem worth it either.

Bought at an economy/mixed rice stall (Southeast Asia). Tempeh is deep fried and then lightly stir-fried in spicy/chili sauce. Broccoli cooked East Asian-style (i.e. with sauce). I'm just assuming about 250 kcal for the sauce I poured over the white rice.

Might be a bit of a hard one this.
