Why is chainline so important on a single speed? Eli5

On a multispeed bike, most of the time the chainline is off by a little or a lot. That’s apparently perfectly fine. So why isn’t it fine when there’s only one cog?

Would you trust a 24 spoke wheel off-road?

Not talking about jump lines here, but maybe some rooty singletrack. Looking at the Ritchey Comp Zeta. I’m new to anything but mtbs but have been expanding my comfort zone (and stable) recently with new builds and restomods. Am looking to give new glory to a 90’s hybrid frame, and am considering new wheels this time. Rim brakes and qr’s in a wider profile 700c are darn hard to find. I guess the move to wider rims coincided with the move to disc brakes. To top it off I have a 126 old (but am comfortable pushing 130, would try 135 in a pinch). But I digress.

I like these ritchey wheels except they may be too lightly constructed for an atb. They boast of their robustness but idk.

Also any general tips for choosing solid go anywhere wheels that fit older road parameters?

How to return shine to hazy clearcoat/paint?

Is it even possible. The frame I’m on now, though newer than my other couple of projects, just looks faded/waxy. Maybe it’s the color or how the bike was kept, idk. What are some products and processes for removing that haze and restoring the luster of the original paint?

Tips for removing build up on braking surface?

Have quite a lot of pad material and miscellaneous grime hardened onto a braking surface. Thought I’d start with a scotch pad and go from there. Solvent suggestions? Will steel wool do more harm than good? Thx.

What is the external lockring looking thing?

The freewheel accepts an FR1.3, but so far I can’t budge it. Freewheel was completely seized but after trying to remove it it now works properly. No labels I can read; came off an ‘93 Specialized CrossRoads. Wondering if I need to remove this lockring looking thing first.

Anyone run a dingle with a double up front and single in the back?

Would require an RD or something to take up the slack. And if you’ve got derailleurs front and rear it raises the question “what’s the point”. But the point would be to have a SS for the road and and SS for the trails all in one bike. I may try it. Any obvious reason it wouldn’t work? Not really as elegant as two sprockets front and rear that use a common chain length and offer significantly different ratios. Just a thought.

SS-curious here, seeking wisdom

I became single speed curious when I noticed that, despite having 11 gears on my trail bike I rarely use more than 3 and on some trails don’t shift at all. Same is true for many of my road rides. It’s pretty flat where I live so once you find the right gear you can pretty much stay there. Shifting becomes more attractive, however, when I face long or steep ascents, or when I go from flat pavement to hilly singletrack.

So as I walk envision my next build being a single speed “gravel” bike, which would usually take on a variety of surfaces in each ride, I’m wondering if I’m barking up the wrong tree.

Where do you ride your SS? Is it possible to find a gear that will be fun to ride on flat pavement and (slightly) hilly double track?

Is this repairable or too far gone?

Looking at an old frame for a restomod. I’m handy enough with components and I can touch up paint, but I’ve not done any frame repair yet. This particular frame is on eBay so I haven’t seen it in person. The description says the hanger is “bent” and only needs straightened. To me it looks nearly completely severed, and demanding of a weld if repairable at all. Based on these photos does it look like a competent welder could make it work? What about a backyard hack? Could I make this serviceable with a spot welder or does it need something more robust?

Can I use 80’s era Suntour Sprint downtube shifters and derailleur with a more modern Capagnolo 9 speed cassette?

The shifters and rd are stock on an 86 Lotus Unique. The shifters click when you pull them and don’t when you push. I assumed they were friction but I’ve not used them yet. AI says it’s could be a ratcheting friction mechanism, but that some Sprint shifters have an SIS mode. These were originally paired with a 6 speed Suntour Winner freewheel, which is toast.

The cassette came mounted on Cane Creek Volos wheel I intended to make single speed until I discovered its Campagnolo and my single speed set is shimano. Now I’m wondering if I can at least run it as is. I would just put it all together and try but I’ve stripped down the frame for rust removal and am still in need of a few things before I have a working bicycle.

Campagnolo wheel compatibility options?

Picked up this Cane Creek Volos Team Ti wheelset at a swap meet and thought I was doing well. But I see now this is a Campagnolo cassette (9sp)? Which means it has a Campy freehub body? Which means it needs Campy mechanicals and can’t be swapped out for a Shimano cassette? So do I have any options with these wheels other than getting a Campy group set?

How shall I remove rust without damaging paint?

Have an 86 Lotus here, with quad-butted Ishiwata steel. I doubt it’s worth anything monetarily but I think it’s quite nice. Has a number of places the paint has chipped off and been replaced with rust. I bought a jar of Naval Jelly, on someone’s recommendation, but it says it will damage paint. Have scrubbed a few spots with 0000 steel wool but a) it may be flattening the surrounding paint and b) someone suggested the wool leaves microscopic dust in the paint that later rusts. Have seen in this sub aluminum foil recommended a few times, either with WD-40 or lemon juice or vinegar or whatever else, and a variety of specific products which may or may not be available locally (rural Illinois). And at this point I’m not quite sure which specific method for this particular application. Small spots of non-flaky rust surrounded by good paint. After removing the rust I plan to use a similar color nail polish. It’s not meant to be a museum piece but I would take pride in cleaning her up a bit. It could be all the various methods people mention when asked about rust are equally valid and it’s really not that complicated. I am quite curious just how thoroughly the discoloration needs to be eliminated in order for the rust not to return beneath the painted (nail polished) surface. Appreciate any advice.

How to start out an almost 80 year old man toward greater fitness?

My 78 year old father would like to start working out. He’s fairly active in general, but not in an athletic or physically demanding way (though at that age maybe grocery shopping and household chores are relatively demanding.)

I (53M) usually do dumbbells or calisthenics at the gym. But I’m certain he can’t do a pull-up, maybe not a sit up, and I’m wondering if dumbbells are safe. For cardio I usually bike for an hour or two, but I’m guessing this duration is unreasonable (and there’s no way I’d put him on an actual bike).

My guess is he may want to over-reach a little and my job will be to keep him safe. But I don’t want to limit him too much if there’s more he can be doing.

Where do you start someone of advanced age and unknown fitness, until (and so that) you can gauge what they are capable of? How do you progress?

What skewer do I need for this front rack?

I installed this front rack (Axiom Suspension & Disc Lowrider) and found that the included skewer barely connects. There is maybe 2-3 threads engaged. I am assuming that is not enough and am looking for a replacement. None are jumping out at me as being the right one.

Is there an important difference between skewers designed for front and rear? Would a rear skewer with an OLD of 141 and an overall length of 176 be adequate?

Are mood stabilizers prescribed to prevent depressive episodes, or only manic?

I take antidepressants (currently desvenlafaxine and bupropion, along with AP paliperidone). But every so often I have a brief depressive episode. It usually only lasts a few days or a week. And I’ll be perfectly fine a few weeks or a couple of months in between. I don’t have too much mania, though I’m diagnosed manic type. It’s possible I’m a bit blind to the mania.

Anyway, these brief depressive episodes aren’t the end of the world I guess. I’m on disability so I’m more or less free to spend a week in bed. I just don’t like it. It’s so pleasant when life is going smoothly, my mood is buoyant and I’m not plagued with paranoia…and then out of nowhere, splat! I’ve lost all interest in everything and even just getting out of bed feels painful. Often I end up calling my doctor and increasing or changing meds. And she’s never suggested a mood stabilizer so maybe that’s not an option. But I’m curious if it is.

Same med, different manufacturer. Doesn’t seem to be working.

Over the last few days I seem to be slipping into depression. Had been stable 3 months on current meds, after a bit of a med change fiasco in January. One of my antidepressants (desvenlafaxine, also take bupropion and the AP paliperidone) was refilled last week and the new pills are different, from a different manufacturer I assume.

I know they are all supposed to be more or less the same. But it really seems like the antidepressant effect is wearing off, like the new pills just don’t work.

Anyone been through this before or have an idea what’s happening? I’m in the US so am dependent on insurance approval to get meds. Do I have any recourse? Will a pharmacy “exchange” a filled prescription for a different brand. If I take this issue to the pharmacy or doctor will they tell me I’m imagining things? It doesn’t help that my psychiatrist is out of the office for a couple of months so if I called in I would just get whoever is on call. Last time I did that they switched up my meds entirely (not all doctors are competent!)

Maybe it will kick in after a few days?

Idk maybe it’s just a coincidence and this is just a slump I’m in. It happens.

▲ 8 r/Celiac

Who here has celiac but no real symptoms, only a positive blood test? Are you strictly gluten-free now?

My Type 1 diabetic teenager just tested positive for celiac. More tests are forthcoming, including endoscopy, but we are starting the process of learning what all this means. The thing is though they have no noticeable symptoms and never have. Eat gluten daily. Digestion is fine. Poop is normal. Etc. If it weren’t for a routine blood test we’d have no idea. So my question is, why worry about it? I see lots of posters on this sub who are religious about avoiding gluten, and undoubtedly with good reason. But I’m wondering how many are lurking in the shadows who have zero reaction to gluten. Is it good enough to be “mostly” gluten free? If we switch to gluten-free bread and pasta and pastries can we reasonably turn a blind eye to cross contamination etc? Or is this a zero-tolerance disease for everyone? Sorry to be ignorant. This is day 2.

Steerer tube blockage?

My quill stem will only go down about 8cm into my 11cm steerer tube. I don’t see anything inside, and I’ve taken it off and can’t see any bend or dent. Any ideas? Any remedies? It makes for very little adjustability to stem height.

If it IS bent or dented in so slight a way that it is difficult to see, is that a problem (aside from the inconvenience)? Does it need to be replaced or can I ride with it? The frame is chromoly, stem is steel too, not sure of the type.

Accuracy of AeT and AnT estimates?

Anyone out there with a basis of comparison who can comment on the accuracy of Suunto’s AeT and AnT estimates?

My limited data so far suggests my AeT is around 144 and my AnT around 154, which seems closer together than I would have expected. But I’m new to all this so idk. I’ve only been paying attention to HR for a year or so and mostly that has been just hovering in an estimated zone 2 of 140-150. So maybe if I work out more in the upper zones my AnT will rise?

Anyway was wanting to start tailoring workouts more to different zones and was hoping my watch’s data could help me define those. 9PP if that matters.
