Obviously not defending either, both are awful.

But I can’t help but see over and over that in discussions of Snow and Coin, Snow is described in a way more respectable manner and looked at through a more gray lens (his relationship with Katniss also brought up as his strongest point - rightfully of course, but still).
There are paragraphs upon paragraphs on how much of an amazing character he is, but weirdly, the same grace is not exceeded to Coin, who most describe as “vengeful”, “petty” or genuinely claim that she was worse than Snow, ignoring the underlying themes attached to her character and what she represents, being quite complex for the small screentime in both book/movies that she got.

The point between the two was that they were both terrible and both were poison for Panem, but no matter how you look at this, Snow was still a dictator who sent 23 kids straight to death every year and enforced and oppressive regime, while Coin (taking some attention to her motives of course) was the leader of a revolution who only could become as bad as him. This was the point of Katniss killing her, to prevent the cycle of power-hungry people hoarding the control over the country for their selfish desires repeating, and ultimately it was a clear political message. But I think it is still fair to look at the two opposing equally and not with a “Snow is bad but he is such a complex character with so many layers, and Coin is just evil.”

Wish I was arguing against strawmen, but this take and the variations of it I’ve seen way more often than I would like to.

I get that they are friends, possibly got close while in d13 and during the games, but at those same games Katniss kept going around in a state of a paranoid mess (distrustful of everyone but MAINLY Finnick). Not even a year passed between the end of the 75th and the end of the revolution, so there was also not that much time for them to get closer than ‘hey we are allies and now new friends’, so I am generally confused on why is her and Finnick called found siblings.

Katniss has a sibling, who is there with her close all the time, for whom she does everything for, and she does not ‘yearn’ for another one, especially that she was never this incredibly close with Finnick: she barely knew anything about his girlfriend/wife and also never once referred to him as a brother or did he refer to her as a sister. For Haymitch and Maysilee I can at least get from the “sis” line, but for Katniss and Finnick? Nope. He isn’t even her closest friend, hell, he isn’t even her closest male friend if I’ll be real with you all - she barely knew him for like 3-4 months and this is generous.

Honestly it is getting tiring to see any close relationships/friendships be slapped with a “siblings” label - I’m convinced that people who do that are either never had siblings or are extremely lucky to have a perfect relationship with them, as “sibling coded” for many is a sign for “closest relationship ever”. As someone with a younger sister with an age gap of 4-5 years (aka the worst age gap ever where you are 30% loving your sibling and 70% either of you are wishing death to one another) I can say that this is not true at all.

So crucify me, but those two are not brother and sister, or siblings or found siblings or whatever else - friendships exist without a ‘sibling’ label and I firmly believe it needs to come back, since not everything is ‘found family’.

On this I actually have some questions for Suzanne Collins, as on why did she lump Snow and Sejanus, Maysilee and Haymitch and Finnick and Katniss together and slapped them with “found siblings” label, when those are different characters, in different circumstances and with different dynamics. (Like since when was Sejanus a found sibling for Snow when he despises the guy for the crimes of existing and then sets him up for death?)

Crucify me, but this is both Haymitch (more in SOTR as there is just a bread with nothing character) and in a less way but still is, Maysilee.

On Maysilee, I just think she could have kind of been more than we ended up getting in the end with her, and way meaner than she was shown (like for the “meanest girl in town” she was super nice, well, like all non career tributes in SOTR, meaning she wasn’t really mean to anyone unless they were the evil bullies who deserved it already). Also sorry, but her ‘callbacks’ sometimes sounded way too cringe, obviously written in a way it was expected of us to stand up and clap.

I still love Maysilee, and she is obviously the best character in SOTR not like this is a high bar though but I am now realizing I love her potential more than the end result.

Don’t cancel or burn me on the stake for this please, and let’s keep this discussion civil.
