Which THG character is this for you?

Crucify me, but this is both Haymitch (more in SOTR as there is just a bread with nothing character) and in a less way but still is, Maysilee.

On Maysilee, I just think she could have kind of been more than we ended up getting in the end with her, and way meaner than she was shown (like for the “meanest girl in town” she was super nice, well, like all non career tributes in SOTR, meaning she wasn’t really mean to anyone unless they were the evil bullies who deserved it already). Also sorry, but her ‘callbacks’ sometimes sounded way too cringe, obviously written in a way it was expected of us to stand up and clap.

I still love Maysilee, and she is obviously the best character in SOTR not like this is a high bar though but I am now realizing I love her potential more than the end result.

Don’t cancel or burn me on the stake for this please, and let’s keep this discussion civil.

After SOTR and knowing what happened to Lou Lou, this threat from Haymitch to Katniss seems particularly cruel

Honestly he was never that caring towards her in the book and never knew how to read the room, but shouldn’t he know what this earpiece did to Lou Lou and how traumatizing it can be? I’m sure he of all people knows, since he tore off that device from her body to not have Lou Lou stay a “plaything”.

…And he proceeds to threaten this to Katniss of all people (this wasn’t even done with good intentions, that is straight up vile, since poor girl was tweaking)

Victor dynamics during their mentorship time be like:

(Pushing the Haymitch-Chaff-Wiress trio agenda because I love them and Haymitch needs his own messy kind of group)

How the Haymitch/Maysilee ship discourse sounds to me

You can not like the ship and it is completely fine (hey, personally I am not a fan of it as well) but genuine judgement and accusations of incest of shipping two characters who are not related in the slightest and come from entirely different backgrounds is ridiculous honestly. At best they spend a 1,5. week being close with one another (Maysilee before being quite a bully to Haymitch and other Seam kids), so people can’t be at fault for seeing a potential doomed romance/enemies to lovers dynamic in them, especially if this ship has already existed for decades, long before we knew Lenore Dove’s name.

Also a small thing that everyone seems to look past when going on the “siblings” route - unlike him, Maysilee never called Haymitch her brother. More than that, we have downright no confirmation that she considers him a brother as well.

Even if their friendship never got much attention, they are still so dear to me

Those frames indicating the corruption of the heroes’ power?

Dietrich coughing/this sort of black slime wrapping around him and Leda looking like she is playing her vihuela against her will?

Those Blaze Arts seem like a very ominous power, which all the lords are looking like they will regret using in the future.

A serious topic that needs to be addressed: using the existence of the Epstein Files (and the very much real victims of the case) to justify how there *should* to be a Finnick book is distasteful

This isn’t much of a discussion about “next book coming up”, but more of a take that I see in many places all over the internet.

And while some might not agree with what I am about to say, but bear with me.

We don’t need a book (a YA book in this case especially) about a child being sold and taken advantage of by the rich and powerful, nevermind real life disturbing case that involved very much real children used to justify that it needs to be written.

Honestly, if looking at horrifying real life case the first thing some think of is: “how can this be used as an inspiration to write a book about my favorite character” (the same one that is sexualized both in-book and irl by so many) is certainly a take

Which Hunger Games plot hole is this?

(Why in the 3rd Quarter Quell, Katniss and Peeta weren’t disposed of soon after the games with the programmed mutts, as the goal was to get rid of them + other problematic victors and not actually entertainment?)

This whole programmed mutts thing being introduced now opens a myriad of plot holes.

No, Sejanus could not just “pull a Plutarch”

This is a take I see often, which is used as a critisism against Sejanus and him being *too emotional*, usually looking like: “with his money he would have impacted the world if only he waited around like Plutarch did”.

No, he would not, and let me explain why it is impossible with Sejanus’ foundation as a character.

A thing that is constantly ignored in this debate is the *entirely different* social situations those two characters are in. Plutarch was not just rich, well-educated, and read a lot. He was a Capitol elite from one of the most influential families in the whole city - they have halls named after them, the Heavensebees were literally one of the ones to *build* the Capitol. Part of the reasons Plutarch could run around the town doing whatever the hell he wants, organize rebellions, get away for the attempts to break the Arena and stay off radars was because he was a Heavensebee.

Now take Sejanus, who is he? No matter his money that Strabo throws around (many times to bail him out), Sejanus is not just an outsider with too political views, he is a District born immigrat who lived in Two quite a big part of his life (8 years out of 17-18). He knows he doesn’t belong, his classmates turn his nose at him, and the only person who is not as terrible to him as everyone else is already considered his best friend. Sejanus was in a very vulnerable position when he was taken from his home and his father immediatly went nuclear, saying to forget his old life in Two and accept that the Capitol (which showed that doesn’t want him) is his home now. Outside of the money, the Plinths had no connections and no protection, money being the only thing they weren’t thrown out yet. Unlike Plutarch, who is separate from the issue and knows all about it from history books, Sejanus identifies himself as/is district: “Don’t forget, I’m part of this litter”, meaning he watched injustice happen to his own people for close to a decade with Games and oppression, and we don’t know how much were the districts abused by the Capitol before the first rebellion.

Since the beginning, those two characters have next to nothing in common besides being rich and being rebels. They have entirely different backgrounds and definitely not in a favor of Sejanus.

Sejanus was “emotional” only because he was desparate from getting no support from the people around besides Strabo throwing money to “fix” the problems (and honestly Strabo worsened his already bad condition by pulling that stunt with Marcus). On the other hand, Plutarch was never an outcast in the Capitol, got himself connections practically handled and this + his own wit formed his personality and his worldview, making him more cold and resourceful.

Point blank, Plutarch could afford himself to sit down and plan his rebellion because he most likely started it while being mature and stable (and as we are shown in SOTR, other people, even the uninvolved in the rebellion like Wiress ended up being punished instead of him). Plutarch was a Capitol man with an idea, Sejanus was a while privileged, a District kid forced into a society that did not want him, and this caused him to lash out - in the end, it shows that even the money, the resource that always protected Sejanus, had its limits and end.
