NOLA coffee and moka

I came across the NOLA style “cafe du mond” coffee which is a coffee and chicory blend. How would you suggest making it with a moka? Start with hot water and let the coffee rise before it sputters too much like regular coffee? Or something else? I’m curious to hear what moka aficionados would do. Just for context I have a bialetti Venus knockoff.

Bialetti Elettrika

Hi Mokapot redditors, what do you think of the Bialetti Elettrika Moka? Would that be an option to make coffee more easily or just a gimmick? Thank you in advance!

King Jace Targaryen?

Jaehaerys had two sons that both died. His choice was between his granddaughter Rhaenys, his grandson Viserys, and (if you read the book) his great grandson and Rhaenys’s son Laenor.

Originally Viserys made Rhaenyra heir apparent but she was a woman and blah blah blah. So why didn’t Viserys just appoint Jace as king and have Rhaenyra as Queen Mother? Viserys was Jaehaeris’s grandson after all and was made heir. Jace was old enough too (he was 16). Jaehaerys became king at 16! He didn’t look Valyrian but he was half Valyrian. Yes, Rhaenyra would have been all mopey but she would still have strong leverage as the mother. And you can’t say Jace is a Velaryon because the agreement was that once king, he’d take the last name of Targaryen.

Dimensional/Avantis vs Index Funds

I usually invest in index funds or passive ETFs, but a friend of mine brags about returning more money with Dimensional ETFs and suggests Avantis is another good one. He says how the original mutual funds did better than the S&P and blah blah blah. But when I see like finance YouTubers, they hardly talk about Dimension or Avantis besides Ben Felix. Frankly, I don’t know if it’s ideal to put money in a fund to someone that “tries to beat the market” because most funds fail to do so. Are Avantis and Dimension the few ETFs that are beating the market and managed by the best fund managers or is it just a fluke? Are there advantages or disadvantages to do Avantis or Dimensional versus just stick with general ETFs like the ones from Vanguard and so on?

Avete suggerimenti?

When do you stop with a moka?

I’ll admit being a rookie in making coffee with a moka but how do you gauge when to stop with a moka? Do you do right before it gargles? Do you do it once it emits jets of water? Or do you just remove it from the heat and let the coffee rise on its own?

Bialetti Mini express

To any redditor who used the Bialetti Mini Express (see picture attached), how did it treat you all? Did it make coffee that tasted like the espresso from the cafe? Was it better than a classic moka? Or is the narrow fosset just a marketing gimmick for bialetti to charge more on a moka? How does it compare to Brikka?

PS: I also asked about the Brikka on another post on Reddit. I’m just asking Reddit about experiences with a couple of different mokas.

Brikka opinion

To any redditor who used the brikka, how did it treat you all? Did it make coffee that tasted like the espresso from the cafe? Was it better than a classic moka? Or is the brikka pressure “choker” just a marketing gimmick for bialetti to charge more on a moka?

Chapter 1185 simple conspiracy

Read this post only if you read chapter 1185.

Chandelle rescued a celestial dragon. But afterwards, when a fog happened that killed many people and impoverished Esperia. As a result, Esperia failed to pay for tribute, so the world government asked for slaves. Esperia refused, so the world government went on to exterminate Esperia’s inhabitants. Do you think the celestial dragons spread the smoke on purpose to poison the inhabitants and exterminate the people there? After all, the world government knew about the amber lead causing illness but stayed quiet about it and spread rumors that the amber lead’s illness was contagious and the world government did a hunting tournament in god valley, so I wouldn’t be surprised if the world government just exterminated Esperia as an act of cruelty. What do you think?

Disclaimer: I’ll flag any trolls or mean comments and ask the mods to let Imu unleash the eternal flame against them. Lol

Big fat executive and corporate debt?

This one may not be truly political but it just boggles my mind. There are large companies like AT&T, Verizon, Ford, Volkswagen, Netflix. But some of these companies run on debt too. But I don’t understand why they don’t use the free flowing cash to pay down debt. They got free flowing cash from reorgs, Trump’s trickle down economic, and increasing prices. But they use that cash for stock buy back (okay - convince investors to stick around and U.S. retirement savers rely on 401k’s) and to pay execs super handsomely. But they won’t pay down their debts? I get it - some debt is healthy to establish credit, but when debt isn’t sustainable, maybe they should pay down the debt before paying execs handsomely in stock and then inject the free capital into the stock to increase the price.

Tom Hagen’s son and Part 3

Originally part 3 was supposed to have Tom Hagen as the main villain because Ford Coppola sowed seeds of discord between Michael and Tom in the earlier movies.

When Ford Coppola is making the movie, Robert Duvall declines because of pay disputes. Ford Coppola writes off Tom Hagen as dead and Michael just shakes hands with Tom’s son and that’s it. My question is - why didn’t Ford Coppola hire someone to play Tom Hagen’s son, and have the same parts that Tom Hagen was supposed to have but rewritten from the son’s perspective? Like I don’t know, like the son wants to avenge his dad and so on.

Wood barrel bourbon flask

I just love Dr Squatch’s deodorant flask. It cracks me up. When I try to get the bundle they only offer the cool myst flask but I would like to get the wood barrel bourbon one. I know it doesn’t matter, but I just like the idea of having the wood barrel bourbon fake deodorant contain actual bourbon inside. Do you have any suggestion or just wait and see?

I can’t stand people who whine

I can’t stand people who constantly whine about everything. When I say whining I mean complain about the same thing over and over again and not do anything about it. Like someone is unemployed and is constantly upset about it but they send out job apps or do upskilling? That’s not whining because they’re trying to improve their situation. But let’s say someone is mad for cleaning their apartment? If you’re upset about it, hire a maid. If you don’t want to pay for a maid, then accept you want to clean the place yourself and want to spend your money for something else. You might say “you’re whining about people whining!”. I don’t - my solution is to ignore them or to amuse myself seeing them whine. I like to be beside them to offer support and comfort but if they don’t want to fix their condition, it’s their problem.

Trucks and color

On the series 4 episode “Trucks” (or “Rusty saved Peter Sam”), the slate trucks wanted to exact their revenge on Sir Handel. Unfortunately, they mistook Peter Sam for Sir Handel and they “attacked”Peter Sam even though other trucks told them not to.

In the railway series all the Skarloey railroad engines are red. So the trucks wouldn’t be able to tell apart Peter Sam from Sir Handel from the top of the hill. Meanwhile, in the tv series, the engines are all different colors. But Peter Sam is green while Sir Handel is blue. So from the distance wouldn’t the trucks be able to tell them apart?

What was a simple interpretation you gave to why the trucks mistook Peter Sam for Sir Handel given their different colors? One interpretation I give is that the trucks were mischievous and impulsive, which is true to the trucks’ nature.

Special Funnel sense

From a plot point of view, what’s the sense in the story “Special Funnel”? It starts with Peter Sam complaining about his funnel, then you get this whole side track with Rusty fixing railroads and then a bridge got washed away, so builders rebuild it. Then you have Peter Sam lose his funnel to an icicle and then Peter Sam gets his special funnel. What’s the sense of the plot? Is there any moral? Am I missing anything? I’m familiar with the season 4 episode. Did they not transfer some things from the original book?

Why is college so expensive?

I went to college in 2012 in Georgia. The average cost of attendance before scholarships was $20k if you were in state, $40k if you were out of state, $50k if you went private. I was out of state, but I had some financial aid, and I gamed the system to save some money. But I didn’t get amazing scholarships that made my college any affordable. Therefore, my dad buckled his belt and helped paying for it even though it sucked. But when the alumni foundation calls me, I just ignore their phone calls. I spoke with a coworker who’s going to send his daughter to college, and in Massachusetts, state school is like $37k but private college is like $90k! All of the costs are after room and board. I get it - the administrative overhead and the ease of getting loans are to blame but come on! Private university almost doubled. If I have children, I want to pay for their college like my dad did. I’m surprised the government isn’t putting a break.

Ginkgo and career

About a decade ago, I was in college and I wanted to work in synthetic biology so badly. I wanted to join some professors’ labs, who didn’t accept me and I ruined my own existence in college. When I graduated, I was hell bent on working for Ginkgo Bioworks or Zymergen. Kinda nuts how things changed after 10 years. Zymergen went down the drain for having a failing product and misleading investors. Ginkgo was caught doing some closed loop deals and got sued for stock manipulation. Ginkgo - the synthetic biology company, the “organism company” - recently pivoted away from the synthetic biology and now does lab automation and AI. It’s insane how things change so much! It’s not like the only time - between 2015 and 2025, AAV and mRNA were the buzz, and now? No one cares!

Bronx Tale’s lesson about severance

In case you got laid off or fired and you’re upset, remember what Sonny from the Bronx Tale would tell you.

u/OneManShow23 — 2 months ago

Being paid to leave

After being laid off despite working hard, I joined a startup because the advertised role matched my interests. During the interview, the founder hinted I’d be working on other projects temporarily, which I chose to overlook.

I foolishly accepted the offer anyway, but once I joined, I was placed on an unrelated projects and the original role never materialized. The company culture was disorganized—more bureaucracy than startup energy, with internal competition between teams and more focus on socializing than meaningful work.

There was little effort to support my growth or training. I was often assigned work I wasn’t interested in, while my attempts to pursue relevant learning were dismissed as “not aligned” with my role.

Frustrated and disengaged, I spent my whole tenure trying to leave. As the two years, I was lining up my savings to plan to quit on my 2 years anniversary without any job lined up. Thankfully, HR and leadership called me in and laid me off with severance and unemployment relief.

I was relieved. The company essentially paid me to exit that toxic environment. It wasn’t all roses. The job search while unemployed was difficult but I got for runaway money with the layoff than I would have if I had quit on my own.
